Szemcsés anyagok kvázisztatikus deformációja = Quasi-static deformation of granular media
Sikerült kísérletileg igazolni a zónatörés jelenségét, azaz a nyírási zónák fénytöréssel analóg viselkedését. Modell, szimuláció és kísérleti szinten megvizsgáltuk a zónák tükröződésének jelenségét is. A zónák határfelületekről való sajátos visszatükröződése összhangban van a variációs modellel és különbözik a geometriai optikában megszokott viselkedéstől. Pontperturbációk vizsgálatával teszteltük a geometriai agitáció következményeit. Az elmozdulásmező hatványfüggvény lecsengést mutat. Az exponens és deformáció megindításához szükséges kritikus erő meglepő módon kapcsolódik a statikus rendszer erőhálózatának statikai határozatlanságához. Ezek a látszólag különböző mennyiségek ugyanolyan nemmonoton viselkedést mutatnak a súrlódás függvényében. | Important progress is made in the field of quasi-static rheology when studying the basic problem, namely what mechanism connects the deformation and the stress fields. In computer simulations we were able to achieve a simple scenario where the basic problem could be clearly demonstrated and we could show the failure of the existing theoretical descriptions. We were able to give a novel description with the help of the agitation base picture and grasp the nontrivial deformation field with a simple differential equation. We regard this as the most important result of the research project. We proved the existence of the refraction phenomenon of shear zones experimentally which is analogous light refraction. We also investigated the possibility of reflection. With simulations and experiments we showed that there is a special way how shear zones can reflect at interfaces. This is different from that in geometric optics and it is in agreement with our variational model. We tested the consequences of geometric agitations with the help of point perturbations. The resulting deformation field shows power law decay. Both, the exponent and the critical force that is needed to initiate deformation, can be connected to the static indeterminacy of force networks. This latter is characteristic to the static system in mechanical equilibrium. These seemingly very different quantities show the same nontrivial and nonmonotonic behavior as the function of the interparticle friction
Szemcsés anyagok sztatikus és dinamikai szerkezete = Static and dynamical structure of granular materials
Számítógépes szimulációkkal vizsgáltuk a mágneses szemcsék lavináinak tulajdonságait. Tanulmányoztuk a nyírási sávok kialakulását három dimenzióban, triaxiális elrendezésben. Kidolgoztuk a nyírási sávok numerikus azonosításának technikáját. Szimmetriasértő sávokat találtunk, amennyiben a külső kényszer ezeket nem akadályozta meg. A kísérletekkel egyezésben elmozdulási keményedést azonosítottunk. | Using computer simulations we studied the properties of avalanches of magnetic grains. The system is characterized by the ratio f of the magnetic and gravitational interaction. The angle of repose and the surface roughness vary linearly with f. Similarly to cohesive systems, we could distinguish two regimes from the point of view of the avalanche dynamics. We investigated the formation of shear bands in three dimensional axisymmetric arrangement. We constructed the techniques of identifying the sear bands. We found symmetry breaking bands whenever the external constraints did not hinder them. In agreement with experiments we found strain hardening. Within the band a critical density developed, which, in the infinite friction limit, had a value depending only on the shape of the grains. We generalized our earlier theory of the shear bands. The new model describes the experiments in the modified Couette-cell excellently. We predicted and proved by simulations that on the boundary of two media with different frictions refraction of shear bands takes place, similarly to the refraction of light. We investigated the effects of perturbations of the jammed state. We found power law decay in the displacement field where the exponent is a non-trivial function of the friction, similarly to the critical force and the penetration depth. These non-monotonic dependences were related to the friction-dependence of fluctuations in the force network found earlier static packings
Refraction of shear zones in granular materials
We study strain localization in slow shear flow focusing on layered granular
materials. A heretofore unknown effect is presented here. We show that shear
zones are refracted at material interfaces in analogy with refraction of light
beams in optics. This phenomenon can be obtained as a consequence of a recent
variational model of shear zones. The predictions of the model are tested and
confirmed by 3D discrete element simulations. We found that shear zones follow
Snell's law of light refraction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor changes, jounal ref. adde
Unjamming of Granular Packings due to Local Perturbations: Stability and Decay of Displacements
We study the mechanical response generated by local deformations in jammed
packings of rigid disks. Based on discrete element simulations we determine the
critical force of the local perturbation that is needed to break the mechanical
equilibrium and examine the generated displacement field. Displacements decay
as a power law of the distance from the perturbation point. The decay exponent
and the critical force exhibit nontrivial dependence on the friction: Both
quantities are nonmonotonic and have a sharp maximum at the friction
coefficient 0.1. We find that the mechanical response properties are closely
related to the problem of force-indeterminacy where similar nonmonotonic
behavior was observed previously. We establish direct connection between the
critical force and the ensemble of static force networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Extent of force indeterminacy in packings of frictional rigid disks
Static packings of frictional rigid particles are investigated by means of
discrete element simulations. We explore the ensemble of allowed force
realizations in the space of contact forces for a given packing structure. We
estimate the extent of force indeterminacy with different methods. The
indeterminacy exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the interparticle friction
coefficient. We verify directly that larger force-indeterminacy is accompanied
by a more robust behavior against local perturbations. We also investigate the
local indeterminacy of individual contact forces. The probability distribution
of local indeterminacy changes its shape depending on friction. We find that
local indeterminacy tends to be larger on force chains for intermediate
friction. This correlation disappears in the large friction limit.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Force indeterminacy in the jammed state of hard disks
Granular packings of hard discs are investigated by means of contact dynamics
which is an appropriate technique to explore the allowed force-realizations in
the space of contact forces. Configurations are generated for given values of
the friction coefficient, and then an ensemble of equilibrium forces is found
for fixed contacts. We study the force fluctuations within this ensemble. In
the limit of zero friction the fluctuations vanish in accordance with the
isostaticity of the packing. The magnitude of the fluctuations has a
non-monotonous friction dependence. The increase for small friction can be
attributed to the opening of the angle of the Coulomb cone, while the decrease
as friction increases is due to the reduction of connectivity of the
contact-network, leading to local, independent clusters of indeterminacy. We
discuss the relevance of indeterminacy to packings of deformable particles and
to the mechanical response properties.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Minor changes, journal reference adde
