    On the finite-size effects in two segregated Bose-Einstein condensates restricted by a hard wall

    The finite-size effects in two segregated Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) restricted by a hard wall is studied by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations in the double-parabola approximation (DPA). Starting from the consistency between the boundary conditions (BCs) imposed on condensates in confined geometry and in the full space, we find all possible BCs together with the corresponding condensate profiles and interface tensions. We discover two finite-size effects: a) The ground state derived from the Neumann BC is stable whereas the ground states derived from the Robin and Dirichlet BCs are unstable. b) Thereby, there equally manifest two possible wetting phase transitions originating from two unstable states. However, the one associated with the Robin BC is more favourable because it corresponds to a smaller interface tension.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    A Survey of 56 Mid-latitude EGRET Error Boxes for Radio Pulsars

    We have conducted a radio pulsar survey of 56 unidentified gamma-ray sources from the 3rd EGRET catalog which are at intermediate Galactic latitudes (5 deg. < |b| < 73 deg.). For each source, four interleaved 35-minute pointings were made with the 13-beam, 1400-MHz multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. This covered the 95% error box of each source at a limiting sensitivity of about 0.2 mJy to pulsed radio emission for periods P > 10 ms and dispersion measures < 50 pc cm-3. Roughly half of the unidentified gamma-ray sources at |b| > 5 deg. with no proposed active galactic nucleus counterpart were covered in this survey. We detected nine isolated pulsars and four recycled binary pulsars, with three from each class being new. Timing observations suggest that only one of the pulsars has a spin-down luminosity which is even marginally consistent with the inferred luminosity of its coincident EGRET source. Our results suggest that population models, which include the Gould belt as a component, overestimate the number of isolated pulsars among the mid-latitude Galactic gamma-ray sources and that it is unlikely that Gould belt pulsars make up the majority of these sources. However, the possibility of steep pulsar radio spectra and the confusion of terrestrial radio interference with long-period pulsars (P > 200 ms) having very low dispersion measures (< 10 pc cm-3, expected for sources at a distance of less than about 1 kpc) prevent us from strongly ruling out this hypothesis. Our results also do not support the hypothesis that millisecond pulsars make up the majority of these sources. Non-pulsar source classes should therefore be further investigated as possible counterparts to the unidentified EGRET sources at intermediate Galactic latitudes.Comment: 24 pages, including 4 figures and 3 tables.     The Fundamental Plane of Gamma-ray Globular Clusters

    We have investigated the properties of a group of γ\gamma-ray emitting globular clusters (GCs) which have recently been uncovered in our Galaxy. By correlating the observed γ\gamma-ray luminosities LγL_{\gamma} with various cluster properties, we probe the origin of the high energy photons from these GCs. We report LγL_{\gamma} is positively correlated with the encounter rate Γc\Gamma_{c} and the metalicity [Fe/H]\left[{\rm Fe/H}\right] which place an intimate link between the gamma-ray emission and the millisecond pulsar population. We also find a tendency that LγL_{\gamma} increase with the energy densities of the soft photon at the cluster location. Furthermore, the two-dimensional regression analysis suggests that LγL_{\gamma}, soft photon densities, and Γc\Gamma_{c}/[Fe/H]\left[{\rm Fe/H}\right] possibly span fundamental planes which potentially provide better predictions for the γ\gamma-ray properties of GCs.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, published in Ap

    Study of cavernous underground conduits in Nam La (Northwest Vietnam) by an integrative approach

    This paper presents the result of an investigation of underground conduits, which connect the swallow holes and the resurgence of a blind river in the tropical, highly karstified limestone Nam La catchment in the NW of Vietnam. The Nam La River disappears underground in several swallow holes near the outlet of the catchment. In the rainy season this results in flooding upstream of the sinkholes. A hypothesis is that the Nam La River resurges at a large cavern spring 4.5 km east of the catchment outlet. A multi-thematic study of the possible connections between the swallow holes and the resurgence was carried out to investigate the geological structure, tectonics, cave structure analysis and discharge time series. The existence of the underground conduits was also tested and proven by tracer experiments. On the basis of a lineament analysis the location of the underground conduits were predicted. A remote sensing derived lineament-length density map was used to track routes from the swallow holes to the resurgence, having the shortest length but highest lineament density. This resulted in a plan-view prediction of underground conduits that matches with the cave and fault development. The functioning of the conduits was further explained by analysing flooding records of a nearby doline, which turns out to act as a temporary storage reservoir mitigating flooding of the catchment outlet area

    Remote sensing and GIS-based analysis of cave development in the Suoimuoi Catchment (Son La - NW Vietnam)

    Integration of remotely sensed imagery with ground surveys is a promising method in cave development studies. In this research a methodology was set up in which a variety of remote sensing and GIS techniques support cave analysis in the tropical karst area of the Suoimuoi catchment, NW Vietnam. In order to extract the maximum information from different remotely sensed data, the hue invariant IHS transformation was applied to integrate Landsat multispectral channels with the high resolution Landsat 7 ETM panchromatic channel. The resulting fused image was used, after enhancement, to visually and digitally extract lineaments. Aerial photos evaluated the extracted lineaments. Based on lineament density indices a fracture zone favorable for cave development is defined. The distance between caves and faults was investigated as well as the correspondence between the cave occurrence and the fracture zone

    Observing two dark accelerators around the Galactic Centre with Fermi Large Area Telescope

    We report the results from a detailed γ\gamma-ray investigation in the field of two "dark accelerators", HESS J1745-303 and HESS J1741-302, with 6.96.9 years of data obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For HESS J1745-303, we found that its MeV-GeV emission is mainly originated from the "Region A" of the TeV feature. Its γ\gamma-ray spectrum can be modeled with a single power-law with a photon index of Γ2.5\Gamma\sim2.5 from few hundreds MeV to TeV. Moreover, an elongated feature, which extends from "Region A" toward northwest for 1.3\sim1.3^{\circ}, is discovered for the first time. The orientation of this feature is similar to that of a large scale atomic/molecular gas distribution. For HESS J1741-302, our analysis does not yield any MeV-GeV counterpart for this unidentified TeV source. On the other hand, we have detected a new point source, Fermi J1740.1-3013, serendipitously. Its spectrum is apparently curved which resembles that of a γ\gamma-ray pulsar. This makes it possibly associated with PSR B1737-20 or PSR J1739-3023.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    One-pot microwave-assisted green synthesis of amine-functionalized graphene quantum dots for high visible light photocatalytic application

    Nowadays, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have gained a huge interest in the field of visible-range photocatalysts because of their tunable band gap and stable photochemical properties. In this work, amine-functionalized GQDs (AGQDs) were successfully prepared by one-step microwave-assisted conversion of glucose, H2O2, and NH3 solution. The obtained quantum dots possess the high quality of graphene structure with the average size of 3.78 nm as well as exhibit a strong green fluorescence with a high quantum yield. Interestingly, the amine-functionalized dots perform outstanding visible-light absorption. To further investigate photocatalytic properties, a composite of AGQDs and TiO2 was then prepared by a simple mixing route. The hybrid material showed high catalytic activity of dye degradation under visible light irradiation, which indicates the key role of AGQDs in enhancing light absorption and induced electron–hole separation. The current study may open a new way for construction of effective visible light photocatalytic systems with a cost-effective, simple approach.Scopu
