Origin of localization in Ti-doped Si

Intermediate band semiconductors hold the promise to significantly improve the efficiency of solar cells but only if the intermediate impurity band is metallic. We apply a recently developed first principles method to investigate the origin of electron localization in Ti doped Si, a promising candidate for intermediate band solar cells. We compute the critical Ti concentration and compare it against the available experimental data. Although Anderson localization is often overlooked in the context of intermediate band solar cells, our results show that in Ti doped Si it plays a more important role in the metal insulator transition than Mott localization. To this end we have devised a way to gauge the relative strengths of these two localization mechanisms that can be applied to study localization in doped semiconductors in general. Our findings have important implications for the theory of intermediate band solar cells

Bridging ligand replacement in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks, ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, by 1,2,3-triazole was investigated. A complete substitution of 2-methylimidazole by 1,2,3-triazole resulted in a topological transformation of the parent framework from a sodalite (SOD) network to a diamond (DIA) network

Formal and model driven design of the bright light therapy system Luxamet

Seasonal depression seriously diminishes the quality of life for many patients. To improve their condition, we propose LUXAMET, a bright light therapy system. This system has the potential to relieve patients from some of the symptoms caused by seasonal depression. The system was designed with a formal and model driven design methodology. This methodology enabled us to minimize systemic hazards, like blinding patients with an unhealthy dose of light. This was achieved by controlling race conditions and memory leaks, during design time. We prove that the system specification is deadlock as well as livelock free and there are no invariant violations. These proofs, together with the similarity between specification model and implementation code, make us confident that the implemented system is a reliable tool which can help patients during seasonal depression

Refractive-index sensing with ultra-thin plasmonic nanotubes

We study the refractive-index sensing properties of plasmonic nanotubes with a dielectric core and ultra-thin metal shell. The few-nm thin metal shell is described by both the usual Drude model and the nonlocal hydrodynamic model to investigate the effects of nonlocality. We derive an analytical expression for the extinction cross section and show how sensing of the refractive index of the surrounding medium and the figure-of-merit are affected by the shape and size of the nanotubes. Comparison with other localized surface plasmon resonance sensors reveals that the nanotube exhibits superior sensitivity and comparable figure-of-merit

Vulnerability plays an important role in risk assessment. For flood vulnerability assessment, the map and characteristics of elements-at-risk at different scales are strongly required depending on the risk and vulnerability assessment requirements. This study proposes a methodology to classify urban structure type by combining object-based image classification and different high resolution remote sensing data. In this study, a high resolution satellite image and LiDAR have been acquired over Kota Bharu, Kelantan which consists of highly heterogeneous urban structure type (UST) classes. The first stage is data pre-processing that includes orthorectification and pansharpening of Geoeye satellite image, image resampling for normalised Digital Surface Model (nDSM) and followed by image segmentation for creating meaningful objects. The second stage comprises of derivation of image features, generation of training and testing datasets, and classification of UST. The classification was based on three types of machine learning classifiers, i.e. Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Classification and Regression Tree (CART). The results obtained from the classification processes were compared using individual omission and commission error, overcall accuracy and Kappa coefficient. The results show that Random Forest classifier with all image features achieved the highest overall accuracy (93.5%) and Kappa coefficient (0.94). This is followed by CART classifier with overall accuracy of 93.7% and Kappa coefficient of 0.92. Finally, SVM classifier produced the lowest overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient with 88.6% and 0.86, respectively. The UST classification result can be further used to assist detailed building characterisation for large scale flood vulnerability assessment

Fetal insulin and IGF-II contribute to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) - associated up-regolation of membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MT1-MMP) in the human feto placental endothelium

CONTEXT: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)-associated hormonal and metabolic derangements in mother and fetus affect placental development and function. Indeed, in GDM, placentas are characterized by hypervascularization and vascular dysfunction. The membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MT1-MMP) is a key player in angiogenesis and vascular expansion. OBJECTIVE: Here, we hypothesized elevated placental MT1-MMP levels in GDM induced by components of the diabetic environment. Therefore, we measured placental MT1-MMP in normal vs. GDM pregnancies, identified potential functional consequences, and investigated the contribution of hyperglycemia and the insulin/IGF axis. DESIGN: Immunohistochemistry identified placental cell types expressing MT1-MMP. MT1-MMP was compared between normal and GDM placentas by immunoblotting. Quantitative PCR of MT1-MMP in primary feto-placental endothelial cells (fpEC) and trophoblasts isolated from both normal and GDM placentas identified the cells contributing to the GDM-associated changes. A putative MT1-MMP role in angiogenesis was determined using blocking antibodies for in vitro angiogenesis assays. Potential GDM-associated factors and signaling pathways inducing MT1-MMP up-regulation in fpEC were identified using kinase inhibitors. RESULTS: Total and active MT1-MMP was increased in GDM placentas (+51 and 54%, respectively, P<0.05) as a result of up-regulated expression in fpEC (2.1-fold, P=0.02). MT1-MMP blocking antibodies reduced in vitro angiogenesis up to 25% (P=0.03). Pathophysiological levels of insulin and IGF-II, but not IGF-I and glucose, stimulated MT1-MMP expression in fpEC by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signals relayed through the insulin, but not IGF-I, receptor. CONCLUSIONS: GDM up-regulates MT1-MMP in the feto-placental endothelium, and insulin and IGF-II contribute. This may account for GDM-associated changes in the feto-placental vasculature

Application of isotope dilution mass spectrometry: determination of ochratoxin A in the Canadian Total Diet Study

Analytical methods are generally developed and optimized for specific commodities. Total Diet Studies, representing typical food products ‘as consumed’, pose an analytical challenge since every food product is different. In order to address this technical challenge, a selective and sensitive analytical method was developed suitable for the quantitation of ochratoxin A (OTA) in Canadian Total Diet Study composites. The method uses an acidified solvent extraction, an immunoaffinity column (IAC) for clean-up, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for identification and quantification, and a uniformly stable isotope-labelled OTA (U-[13C20]-OTA) as an internal recovery standard. Results are corrected for this standard. The method is accurate (101% average recovery) and precise (5.5% relative standard deviation (RSD)) based on 17 duplicate analysis of various food products over 2 years. A total of 140 diet composites were analysed for OTA as part of the Canadian Total Diet Study. Samples were collected at retail level from two Canadian cities, Quebec City and Calgary, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The results indicate that 73% (102/140) of the samples had detectable levels of OTA, with some of the highest levels of OTA contamination found in the Canadian bread supply
