Studies on antibacterial activity of some plant extracts

    Get PDF
The antibacterial activity of the extracts of Melia azedarch (L), Spilanthes paniculata (L, f), Oxalis Corniculata, Colocassic esculenta (L), and Hyptis suaveolens (L) were evaluated against five bacteria isolated from semen samples (E. coli., S. aureus, P. vulgaris, P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis). These plants are used in medicine to treat infections of microbial origin

Effect of Contour Cultivation on Rainfall-Runoff Relationship and Productivity in Rainfed Agriculture

A field experiment was carried out to test the suitability of contour cultivation with vegetative contour hedges (T2, leucaena and T3, vetivar) over cultivation across (T4) and along (T1, traditional) the slope in controlling runoff, soil and nutrient losses. During the study period of 9 years, data pertaining to surface runoff, soil and nutrient losses revealed the superiority of contour cultivations along with the vegetative hedges in controlling runoff and soil nutrient losses over cultivation across and along the slope. The average percentage runoff for the rainfall causing runoff (437.41 mm) was 14.98 (T3), 20.42 (T2), 22.46 (T4) and 28.93 (T1) along with the soil loss of 1.36 (T3), 2.31 (T2), 3.99 (T4) and 7.21 (T1) t.ha-1. Maximum reduction in NPK (55 to 63%) was observed in contour cultivation along with the vetiver hedge (T3). The average yield levels of sorghum enhanced by 14.40 to 19.38% in contour cultivation with vegetative hedges (T2 and T3) and 7.45% in cultivation across the slope (T4) over the traditional practice of cultivation along the slope (T1). It was observed that contour cultivation along with the vetivar hedges (T3) is effective in controlling runoff and soil and nutrient losses. The study further indicated that the best fit equations were 4th degree polynomial for all the treatments having coefficient of determinant (R2) as 0.86, 0.84, 0.72 and 0.84 for T1, T2, T3 and T4 respectively. The developed rainfall-runoff relationships could be successfully used for predicting runoff

Removal of Lead from Sewage Water using Response Surface Methodology: A Case Study

Removal of lead (Pb) from sewage water by phytorid sewage treatment plant was studied at Agriculture College, Maharajbag, Nagpur to examine the efficacy of the phytorid sewage treatment plant in Pb removal from the sewage water, and to determine the optimum condition using response surface methodology. A Box-Behnken model was employed as an experimental design. The effect of three independent variables hydraulic loading or flow (50 - 150 m3 .d-1), dilution (10 - 80 %) and spatial length (16 - 100 %) was studied on Pb removal from the sewage water in bench mode of the experiment. The optimal conditions of Pb removal were found to be flow of 86 m3 .d-1, dilution of 78% and spatial length of 55 per cent. Under these experimental conditions, the experimental Pb removal obtained was 0.0035 mg.l-1. The proposed model equation using the RSM showed good agreement with the experimental data, with a coefficient of determination (R2 ) of 98.30 per cent. The result showed that optimised condition could be used for the efficient removal of the Pb from the sewage water

Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis misdiagnosed as Pityriasis Versicolor

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder characterized by widespread and persistent infection with HPV commonly HPV3 and 10, giving rise to a characteristic combination of plane warts, pityriasis versicolor like lesions and reddish plaques like lichen planus. It is an autosomal recessive condition though autosomal dominant and X- linked dominant cases has also been reported. In EV, there are mutations in the EVER1 or EVER2 genes on chromosome 17q25, which, due to a defect of cell-mediated immunity, lead to an abnormal susceptibility of the patients to a specific group of HPV genotypes known as EV HPV. The disease usually begins in childhood with equal prevalence in both sexes affecting persons of all races. Malignant changes like squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma occurs in 30- 70% of cases on the sun exposed parts in the age group 20-40 years, but metastasis is rare. EV diagnosis must be suspected when persistent verrucas are present in large body areas and are thus difficult to treat. We report a case of a 20 years old male patient who came to our OPD with the complaints of asymptomatic white patches over upper chest, upper back, B/L upper limb & neck since 1½ year

    Micro-irrigation in India

Presented at the 2002 USCID/EWRI conference, Energy, climate, environment and water - issues and opportunities for irrigation and drainage on July 9-12 in San Luis Obispo, California.Includes bibliographical references.On-farm production, income and water use efficiency for horticultural and other agronomical crops in terms of the benefit cost ratio micro-irrigation systems were calculated, and it is observed that B.C. ratio of drip irrigation was greater than conventional methods of irrigation. The water use efficiency was also higher than for conventional methods of irrigation. The monetary gains from micro-irrigation systems were larger than for conventional methods of irrigation for all crops. Information on water use efficiency, productivity and advantages of micro-irrigation compared to conventional irrigation methods is compiled and presented

Online Mathematics Learning Experiences of the Colleges of Education Students in Ghana

The dominant mode of instructional delivery in Ghanaian Colleges of Education has been the conventional face-to-face. However, the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year teaching had to be done via an emergency remote online teaching mode due to the novel covid-19 pandemic. In a cross-sectional survey, the online mathematics learning experienced of 497 students sampled from three Colleges of education in Ghana were explored using the adapted community of inquiry survey instrument. It was observed from the study that students' online mathematics learning experiences were low. Further observation showed that while class cohesion and resolution dimensions were absent, teaching presence, exploration, affective expression, and triggering event dimensions of students' online mathematics learning experiences were present. Additionally, the results showed that the difference in the magnitude of means in gender was partly dependent on the category of internet use before the remote online mathematics teaching was observed in the dimension of lack of class cohesion. Besides, the students were generally indifferent in their learning experiences regarding genders but significantly in terms of their internet use before the remote online mathematics teaching. Based on the results, implications of the state of the college of education (CoE) students' online mathematics learning experiences and suggestions for improvement have been proposed
