    Multianalytical provenance analysis of Eastern Ross Sea LGM till sediments (Antarctica): Petrography, geochronology, and thermochronology detrital data

    In order to reveal provenance of detrital sediments supplied by West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), 19 glaciomarine cores of Last Glacial Maximum age were analyzed from Eastern Ross Sea and Sulzberger Bay. Analytical techniques included petrographic analysis of gravel-sized clasts, geochronology (zircon U-Pb: Zrn-UPb) and thermochronology (apatite fission track: AFT) of sand-sized fractions. Petrographic analysis revealed a similarity with the lithologies presently exposed in western Marie Byrd Land (MBL), with major roles played by low-grade metamorphic rocks and granitoids. Furthermore Zrn-UPb and AFT data allowed to identify the ages of formation and cooling of sedimentary source area, consisting of Cambrian-Precambrian basement (i.e., Swanson Formation in western MBL) which underwent at least two episodes of magma intrusion, migmatization and cooling during Devonian-Carboniferous and Cretaceous-Paleocene times. Scarcity of volcanic clasts in the region of Ross Sea along the front of West Antarctica Ice Streams in association with the occurrence of AFT Oligocene-Pliocene dates suggests a localized tectonic exhumation of portions of MBL, as already documented for the opposite side of West Antarctic Rift System in the Transantarctic Mountains. Furthermore, a Zrn-UPb and AFT population of Late Triassic-Jurassic age indicates the presence of unexposed rocks that formed or metamorphosed at that time in the sedimentary source area, which could be identified in McAyeal Ice Stream and Bindschadler Ice Stream catchment areas

    Constraints from detrital zircon geochronology on the early deformation of the Ross orogen, Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica

    New ages of detrital zircons constrain the timing of the onset of deformation in the Ross orogen. In the Skelton Glacier area, Skelton Group was deformed before cross-cutting intrusion at 551 Ma. The youngest, significant, age-probability peaks from three samples of Skelton Group are 649 Ma, 684 Ma, and 691 Ma. The 649 Ma peak may be considered the maximum depositional age of Skelton Group, constraining the period of deformation to between 649 Ma and 551 Ma. In the upper Scott Glacier area, La Gorce Formation was deformed prior to cross-cutting intrusion at 526 Ma. The youngest, significant, age-probability peaks from two samples of La Gorce Formation are 581 Ma and 619 Ma. The 581 Ma peak may be considered the maximum depositional age of La Gorce Formation, constraining the period of deformation to between 581 Ma and 526 Ma

    Provenance of Pleistocene sediments in the ANDRILL AND-1B drillcore: Clay and heavy mineral data

    The cryosphere in the McMurdo Sound region has undergone significant modifications during the last 1 Ma. Consequently, the sedimentary sequences underlying the modern McMurdo Ice-Shelf provide geological data to reconstruct variations in transport and depositional mechanisms of terrigenous material due to variations in ice sheet extension, grounding line position and main icestream flow directions during glacial and interglacial periods. The present study aims to investigate the clay and heavy mineral assemblages of the late Pleistocene subglacial and glaciomarine sediments recovered during the ANDRILL-McMurdo Ice Shelf Project in Windless Bight (South of Ross Island). The analyses show that the sediments are a mix of detritus from the McMurdo Volcanic Group (MVG) and the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) from the south and west. MVG-derived minerals prevail with respect to TAM-derived minerals. The down-core mineralogical variations are determined by changes in the source rocks and the sedimentary processes. Sediments at the drill site are nourished by ice coming from the South which delivered rocks from the McMurdo Volcanic region; the enrichment of a TAM component in massive diamictites testifies that the ice sheet collected debris from the Transantarctic Mountains. When open marine conditions prevailed, only sediments from a local source (i.e. McMurdo volcanics) were deposited

    A Sedimentological Record of Early Miocene Ice Advance and Retreat, AND-2A drill hole, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica

    The lowest 501 m (∼1139–638 m) of the AND-2A core from southern McMurdo Sound is the most detailed and complete record of early Miocene sediments in Antarctica and indicates substantial variability in Antarctic ice sheet activity during early Miocene time. There are two main pulses of diamictite accumulation recorded in the core, and three significant intervals with almost no coarse clasts. Each diamictite package comprises several sequences consistent with ice advance-retreat episodes. The oldest phase of diamictite deposition, Composite Sequence 1 (CS1), has evidence for grounded ice at the drill site and has been dated around 20.2–20.1 Ma. It likely coincides with cooling associated with isotope event Mi1aa. This is overlain by a diamictite-free, sandstone-dominated interval, CS2 that includes three coarsening-upward deltaic cycles, is inferred to mark substantial warming, and has an inferred age range between 20.1 and 20.05 Ma. Above this is an interval with variable amounts of diamictite (CS3), with indicators of ice grounding, that is inferred to record ice advance relative to CS2, and is overlain by an ∼100-m-thick mud-rich interval (CS4) with no sedimentological evidence for direct glacial influence at the drill site (ca. 19.4–18.7 Ma). A third overlying diamictite-rich interval (CS5) overlies an unconformity spanning 18.7–17.8 Ma (coinciding with isotope event Mi1b), and records a return to more ice-influenced conditions at the drill site in late early Miocene time. The overall picture for the early Miocene (spanning the period 20.2–17.35 Ma) is one of ice advance alternating with periods of ice retreat and hence significant global climate fluctuations after the permanent establishment of the Antarctic ice sheet at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, and preceding the relative warmth of the middle Miocene climatic optimum (ca. 17.5–14.5 Ma). Sedimentary cyclicity in CS1 and CS2 is consistent with ∼21 k.y. precession but in CS3 the frequency is closer to 100 k.y. (consistent with eccentricity), with a possible change to 20 k.y. precession in CS4. CS5 cyclicity is consistent with obliquity forcing. Provenance data are consistent with local Transantarctic Mountains glacial activity under precessional control in CS1 and more southerly ice-cap build up under 100 k.y. eccentricity and obliquity control during CS3 and CS5, respectively

    Large cryptic genomic rearrangements with apparently normal karyotypes detected by array-CGH.

    Background: Conventional karyotyping (550 bands resolution) is able to identify chromosomal aberrations >5-10 Mb, which represent a known cause of intellectual disability/developmental delay (ID/DD) and/or multiple congenital anomalies (MCA). Array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array-CGH) has increased the diagnostic yield of 15-20%. Results: In a cohort of 700 ID/DD cases with or without MCA, including 15 prenatal diagnoses, we identified a subgroup of seven patients with a normal karyotype and a large complex rearrangement detected by array-CGH (at least 6, and up to 18 Mb). FISH analysis could be performed on six cases and showed that rearrangements were translocation derivatives, indistinguishable from a normal karyotype as they involved a similar band pattern and size. Five were inherited from a parent with a balanced translocation, whereas two were apparently de novo. Genes spanning the rearrangements could be associated with some phenotypic features in three cases (case 3: DOCK8; case 4: GATA3, AKR1C4; case 6: AS/PWS deletion, CHRNA7), and in two, likely disease genes were present (case 5: NR2F2, TP63, IGF1R; case 7: CDON). Three of our cases were prenatal diagnoses with an apparently normal karyotype. Conclusions: Large complex rearrangements of up to 18 Mb, involving chromosomal regions with similar size and band appearance may be overlooked by conventional karyotyping. Array-CGH allows a precise chromosomal diagnosis and recurrence risk definition, further confirming this analysis as a first tier approach to clarify molecular bases of ID/DD and/or MCA. In prenatal tests, array-CGH is confirmed as an important tool to avoid false negative results due to karyotype intrinsic limit of detection

    Bowel preparation for elective colorectal resection: multi-treatment machine learning analysis on 6241 cases from a prospective Italian cohort

    background current evidence concerning bowel preparation before elective colorectal surgery is still controversial. this study aimed to compare the incidence of anastomotic leakage (AL), surgical site infections (SSIs), and overall morbidity (any adverse event, OM) after elective colorectal surgery using four different types of bowel preparation. methods a prospective database gathered among 78 Italian surgical centers in two prospective studies, including 6241 patients who underwent elective colorectal resection with anastomosis for malignant or benign disease, was re-analyzed through a multi-treatment machine-learning model considering no bowel preparation (NBP; No. = 3742; 60.0%) as the reference treatment arm, compared to oral antibiotics alone (oA; No. = 406; 6.5%), mechanical bowel preparation alone (MBP; No. = 1486; 23.8%), or in combination with oAB (MoABP; No. = 607; 9.7%). twenty covariates related to biometric data, surgical procedures, perioperative management, and hospital/center data potentially affecting outcomes were included and balanced into the model. the primary endpoints were AL, SSIs, and OM. all the results were reported as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). results compared to NBP, MBP showed significantly higher AL risk (OR 1.82; 95% CI 1.23-2.71; p = .003) and OM risk (OR 1.38; 95% CI 1.10-1.72; p = .005), no significant differences for all the endpoints were recorded in the oA group, whereas MoABP showed a significantly reduced SSI risk (OR 0.45; 95% CI 0.25-0.79; p = .008). conclusions MoABP significantly reduced the SSI risk after elective colorectal surgery, therefore representing a valid alternative to NBP
