Aim of this study was to assess the relation of generalized obesity and fat distribution to sympathetic and parasympathetic components ofheart rate in healthy young subjects. We recorded ECG continuously in the supine and standing position with pacing respiration at 0.25Hz for 5 min in 47 healthy young female. Habitus was represented by body mass index, as an index of generalized adiposity, and by the ratio of waist-to-hip girth (waist/hip ratio), as an index of centripetal fat distribution. A spectral analysis of R-R variability from 256-sec series interbeat interval in each position provided markers of sympathetic nerve activity (ratio of low frequency component to high frequency component (LF /HF ratio) in the standing position), and vagal activity (HF power in the supine position). LF /HF ratio in the standing position was positively correlated with both waist/ hip ratio (r=0.366, p<0.02) and waist girth (r= 0.317, p<0.04), but not correlated with body mass index (p=0.904). HF power in the supine position was not correlated with waist/hip ratio (p=0.893), waist girth (p= 0.907) or body .mass index (p=0.454). These results suggest that, in healthy young female, centripetal fat distribution is one of the determinants of the cardiac sympathetic activity, but not the cardiac vagal activity

Star Formation Timescales of the Halo Populations from Asteroseismology and Chemical Abundances

We combine asteroseismology, optical high-resolution spectroscopy, and kinematic analysis for 26 halo red giant branch stars in the \textit{Kepler} field in the range of 2.5<[Fe/H]<0.6-2.5<[\mathrm{{Fe}/{H}}]<-0.6. After applying theoretically motivated corrections to the seismic scaling relations, we obtain an average mass of 0.97±0.03M0.97\pm 0.03\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}} for our sample of halo stars. Although this maps into an age of 7Gyr\sim 7\,\mathrm{Gyr}, significantly younger than independent age estimates of the Milky Way stellar halo, we considerer this apparently young age is due to the overestimation of stellar mass in the scaling relations. There is no significant mass dispersion among lower red giant branch stars (logg>2\log g>2), which constrains a relative age dispersion to <18%<18\%, corresponding to <2Gyr<2\,\mathrm{Gyr}. The precise chemical abundances allow us to separate the stars with [{Fe}/{H}]>1.7>-1.7 into two [{Mg}/{Fe}] groups. While [α\alpha/{Fe}] and [{Eu}/{Mg}] ratios are different between the two subsamples, [ss/Eu], where ss stands for Ba, La, Ce, and Nd, does not show a significant difference. These abundance ratios suggest that the chemical evolution of the low-Mg population is contributed by type~Ia supernovae, but not by low-to-intermediate mass asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a constraint on its star formation timescale as 100Myr<τ<300Myr100\,\mathrm{Myr}<\tau<300\,\mathrm{Myr}. We also do not detect any significant mass difference between the two [{Mg}/{Fe}] groups, thus suggesting that their formation epochs are not separated by more than 1.5 Gyr.Comment: 44 pages. accepted versio

Discovery of the First Low-Luminosity Quasar at z > 7

We report the discovery of a quasar at z = 7.07, which was selected from the deep multi-band imaging data collected by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. This quasar, HSC J124353.93+010038.5, has an order of magnitude lower luminosity than do the other known quasars at z > 7. The rest-frame ultraviolet absolute magnitude is M1450 = -24.13 +/- 0.08 mag and the bolometric luminosity is Lbol = (1.4 +/- 0.1) x 10^{46} erg/s. Its spectrum in the optical to near-infrared shows strong emission lines, and shows evidence for a fast gas outflow, as the C IV line is blueshifted and there is indication of broad absorption lines. The Mg II-based black hole mass is Mbh = (3.3 +/- 2.0) x 10^8 Msun, thus indicating a moderate mass accretion rate with an Eddington ratio 0.34 +/- 0.20. It is the first z > 7 quasar with sub-Eddington accretion, besides being the third most distant quasar, known to date. The luminosity and black hole mass are comparable to, or even lower than, those measured for the majority of low-z quasars discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and thus this quasar likely represents a z > 7 counterpart to quasars commonly observed in the low-z universe.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Clinical Utility of Germline Genetic Testing in Japanese Men Undergoing Prostate Biopsy

Background: Multiple common variants and also rare variants in monogenic risk genes such as BRCA2 and HOXB13 have been reported to be associated with risk of prostate cancer (PCa); however, the clinical setting in which germline genetic testing could be used for PCa diagnosis remains obscure. Herein, we tested the clinical utility of a 16 common variant-based polygenic risk score (PRS) that has been developed previously for Japanese men and also evaluated the frequency of PCa-associated rare variants in a prospective cohort of Japanese men undergoing prostate biopsy. Methods: A total of 1336 patients undergoing first prostate biopsy were included. PRS was calculated based on the genotype of 16 common variants, and sequencing of 8 prostate cancer-associated genes was performed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction based target sequencing. PRS was combined with clinical factors in logistic regression models to assess whether addition of PRS improves the prediction of biopsy positivity. Results: The top PRS decile was associated with an odds ratio of 4.10 (95% confidence interval = 2.46 to 6.86) with reference to the patients at average risk, and the estimated lifetime absolute risk approached 20%. Among the patients with prostate specific antigen 2-10 ng/mL who had prebiopsy magnetic resonance imaging, high PRS had an equivalent impact on biopsy positivity as a positive magnetic resonance imaging finding. Rare variants were detected in 19 (2.37%) and 7 (1.31%) patients with positive and negative biopsies, respectively, with BRCA2 variants being the most prevalent. There was no association between PRS and high-risk rare variants. Conclusions: Germline genetic testing could be clinically useful in both pre- and post-PSA screening settings

We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with PQB 5.6. This demonstrates that the algorithm has very high efficiency, even though we are probing an unprecedentedly low luminosity population down to M 1450 ∼-21 mag.Y.M. was supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) KAKENHI grant No. JP17H04830, No. 21H04494, and the Mitsubishi Foundation grant No. 30140. Deletion of aquaporin-4 in APP/PS1 mice exacerbates brain Aβ accumulation and memory deficits

BACKGROUND: Preventing or reducing amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation in the brain is an important therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Recent studies showed that the water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) mediates soluble Aβ clearance from the brain parenchyma along the paravascular pathway. However the direct evidence for roles of AQP4 in the pathophysiology of AD remains absent. RESULTS: Here, we reported that the deletion of AQP4 exacerbated cognitive deficits of 12-moth old APP/PS1 mice, with increases in Aβ accumulation, cerebral amyloid angiopathy and loss of synaptic protein and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the hippocampus and cortex. Furthermore, AQP4 deficiency increased atrophy of astrocytes with significant decreases in interleukin-1 beta and nonsignficant decreases in interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in hippocampal and cerebral samples. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that AQP4 attenuates Aβ pathogenesis despite its potentially inflammatory side-effects, thus serving as a promising target for treating AD.
