    Infrared 3-4 Micron Spectroscopy of Nearby PG QSOs and AGN-Nuclear Starburst Connections in High-luminosity AGN Populations

    We present the results of infrared L-band (3-4 micron) slit spectroscopy of 30 PG QSOs at z < 0.17, the representative sample of local high-luminosity, optically selected AGNs. The 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature is used to probe nuclear (< a few kpc) starburst activity and to investigate the connections between AGNs and nuclear starbursts in PG QSOs. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in the individual spectra of 5/30 of the observed PG QSOs. We construct a composite spectrum of PAH-undetected PG QSOs and discern the presence of the 3.3 micron PAH emission therein. We estimate the nuclear-starburst and AGN luminosities from the observed 3.3 micron PAH emission and 3.35 micron continuum luminosities, respectively, and find that the nuclear-starburst-to-AGN luminosity ratios in PG QSOs are similar to those of previously studied AGN populations with lower luminosities, suggesting that AGN-nuclear starburst connections are valid over the wide luminosity range of AGNs in the local universe. The observed nuclear-starburst-to-AGN luminosity ratios in PG QSOs with available supermassive black hole masses are comparable to a theoretical prediction based on the assumption that the growth of a supermassive black hole is controlled by starburst-induced turbulence.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (No. 63, 2011 March, Subaru special issue

    Cryoconite:The dark biological secret of the cryosphere

    Cryoconite is granular sediment found on glacier surfaces comprising both mineral and biological material. Despite long having been recognised as an important glaciological and biological phenomenon cryoconite remains relatively poorly understood. Here, we appraise the literature on cryoconite for the first time, with the aim of synthesising and evaluating current knowledge to direct future investigations. We review the properties of cryoconite, the environments in which it is found, the biology and biogeochemistry of cryoconite, and its interactions with climate and anthropogenic pollutants. We generally focus upon cryoconite in the Arctic in summer, with Antarctic and lower latitude settings examined individually. We then compare the current state-of-the-science with that at the turn of the twentieth century, and suggest directions for future research including specific recommendations for studies at a range of spatial scales and a framework for integrating these into a more holistic understanding of cryoconite and its role in the cryosphere

    KCl:Eu^<2+>結晶の熱蛍光による太陽光中の紫外線量計測

    金沢大学工学部2価のEuを含むKCl単結晶に紫外線を照射し、その後の加熱により熱蛍光の測定が可能である。実験結果より測定可能な波長範囲は200nmより感度は低いが320nm付近までである。しかし、測定の前には温度約700℃で30分間不活性ガス中で熱処理を行いその後、室温まで急冷することにより熱蛍光(TL)の強度が約1桁大きくなることが判明した。また、試料作成直後では熱処理の効果が期待できないことから、室温で試料を保管することによりEuの凝集体が試料中に生成し、できた凝集体が熱処理によって分散することにより熱蛍光強度が増すものと考えられる。KCl:Eu結晶の紫外線照射によって熱蛍光が測定可能な波長範囲は約200nmから310nmの範囲で250nmが一段と高感度であるとの結果も得られた。しかし、290nmより長波長側では感度が低くなっている。このことが太陽光にたいする感度の低下に関与しているものと考えられる。この長波長側の感度をあげる方法として長時間のアニールが有用であると思われる。また、今回Euの濃度を少なくした結晶(濃度は約100ppm)を作成し実験に用いた。この結果大学の屋上で太陽光を照射して弱いながら熱蛍光の測定に成功した。UV light irradiation followed by heating a single crystal of KCl doped with divalent europium ions was shown to produce thermoluminescence (TL) glow peaks which may provide a unique method for UV dosimetry of the sunlight. In this work several experimental conditions were investigated to measure the UV light and the results are summarized as follows.(1) The UV light in the range from 200 to 320nm was shown to be effective for measurements of the TL glow peaks. The most effective UV light was found at the wavelength around 250nm corresponding to Eu^ [^8S_(4f^7) to t_(4f^65d)] transition.(2) The TL intensity which was estimated with identical UV light irradiation increased with temperature of the pre-heat treatment of the crystal. The increment as high as 10 times was obtained for the crystal treated at 927K in argon gas atmosphere for 30min compared with untreated one.(3) The TL intensity was also found to depend on the europium concentration in the crystal and the optimum concentration was around 100ppm.(4) Preliminary measurement of the glow peak after irradiation of the sunlight was successful wth the crystal doped with 100ppm of europium, though the intensity was so weak.
