    Influence of the Consideration of Future Consequences on Financial Behavior: The Case of Japanese Individual Investors

    We analyze the impact of the “consideration of future consequences” (CFC) on the amount of financial assets and the liabilities of individual investors by applying a Tobit model to data from a web-based survey. We find that impatient individuals with high CFC have fewer deposits and financial asset balances. We also examine the influence of the CFC-immediate (CFC-I) and CFC-future (CFC-F) sub-indicators often used in psychology as well as CFC on financial asset balances and liabilities. CFC-I show concern with immediate consequences and also an index related to ego depletion. We find that the higher the CFC-I, the lower the amount of deposits and financial asset balances. However, CFC-F is a sub-indicator designating lack of concern with future consequences; thus, the higher the CFC-F, the larger the debt

    Background contributions in the electron-tracking Compton camera onboard SMILE-2+

    The Mega electron volt (MeV) gamma-ray observation is a promising diagnostic tool for observing the universe. However, the sensitivity of MeV gamma-ray telescopes is limited due to peculiar backgrounds, restricting the application of MeV gamma rays for observation. Identification of backgrounds is crucial for designing next-generation telescopes. Therefore, herein, we assessed the background contribution in the electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC) on board the SMILE- 2+ balloon experiment. This assessment was performed using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results revealed that the background below 400 keV existed due to the atmospheric gamma-ray background, the cosmic-ray/secondary-particle background, and the accidental background. On the other hand, the unresolved background component, which was not likely to be relevant to direct Compton-scattering events in the ETCC, was confirmed above 400 keV. Overall, this study demonstrated that the Compton-kinematics test provides a powerful tool to remove the background and principally improves the signal-to-noise ratio at 400 keV by an order of magnitude.Comment: 11 pages, 18 figure

    Serotonin enhances the production of type IV collagen by human mesangial cells.BackgroundThe plasma concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in diabetic patients is higher than that in normal subjects. Since recent reports have demonstrated the presence of 5-HT2A receptor in glomerular mesangial cells, it is possible that 5-HT may be involved in the development of diabetic nephropathy through the 5-HT2A receptor in mesangial cells. Because expansion of the glomerular mesangial lesion is a characteristic feature of diabetic nephropathy, we examined the effect of 5-HT on the production of type IV collagen by human mesangial cells.MethodsHuman mesangial cells were incubated with 5-HT with or without 5-HT receptor antagonists, protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor or transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) antibody. Type IV collagen mRNA and protein concentration in medium were measured by Northern blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. TGF-β mRNA and bioactivity in the medium were measured by Northern blot analysis and bioassay using mink lung epithelial cells, respectively.Results5-HT stimulated the production of type IV collagen by human mesangial cells, which was inhibited by ketanserin and sarpogrelate hydrochloride, 5-HT2A receptor antagonists, but not by ondansetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. 5-HT increased the bioactivities of both active and total TGF-β. However, the 5-HT-enhanced production of type IV collagen was completely inhibited by an anti-TGF-β antibody. Furthermore, a PKC inhibitor, calphostin C, inhibited the 5-HT-induced increase in type IV collagen secretion, and the activity of membrane PKC was increased by 5-HT. Phorbol ester activated type IV collagen production as well as active and total TGF-β. Calphostin C completely inhibited the 5-HT-enhanced activity of active TGF-β, but did not inhibit exogenous TGF-β-induced increase in type IV collagen secretion.ConclusionsOur results suggest that 5-HT-enhanced production of type IV collagen by human mesangial cells is mediated by activation of PKC and subsequent increase in active TGF-β activity

    New readout and data-acquisition system in an electron-tracking Compton camera for MeV gamma-ray astronomy (SMILE-II)

    For MeV gamma-ray astronomy, we have developed an electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC) as a MeV gamma-ray telescope capable of rejecting the radiation background and attaining the high sensitivity of near 1 mCrab in space. Our ETCC comprises a gaseous time-projection chamber (TPC) with a micro pattern gas detector for tracking recoil electrons and a position-sensitive scintillation camera for detecting scattered gamma rays. After the success of a first balloon experiment in 2006 with a small ETCC (using a 10×\times10×\times15 cm3^3 TPC) for measuring diffuse cosmic and atmospheric sub-MeV gamma rays (Sub-MeV gamma-ray Imaging Loaded-on-balloon Experiment I; SMILE-I), a (30 cm)3^{3} medium-sized ETCC was developed to measure MeV gamma-ray spectra from celestial sources, such as the Crab Nebula, with single-day balloon flights (SMILE-II). To achieve this goal, a 100-times-larger detection area compared with that of SMILE-I is required without changing the weight or power consumption of the detector system. In addition, the event rate is also expected to dramatically increase during observation. Here, we describe both the concept and the performance of the new data-acquisition system with this (30 cm)3^{3} ETCC to manage 100 times more data while satisfying the severe restrictions regarding the weight and power consumption imposed by a balloon-borne observation. In particular, to improve the detection efficiency of the fine tracks in the TPC from \sim10\% to \sim100\%, we introduce a new data-handling algorithm in the TPC. Therefore, for efficient management of such large amounts of data, we developed a data-acquisition system with parallel data flow.Comment: 11 pages, 24 figure

    本研究では、運動部の生徒の意欲や自主性を生み出すために有効的な指導方法について、Deci、Ryan が提唱する自己決定理論に基づき、「動機づけ」の大切さを、外発的な動機づけと、内発的な動機づけについての比較をもって分析した。さらに、動機づけに対する指導者の役割と影響力について、Mageau、Vallerand らの理論をもとに考察を加えた。そして、その結果として、生徒の意欲や自主性を生み出すためには、動機づけを内発的に高めることへの重要性が明らかとなった。また、動機づけは、個人の心理状態による変化だけではなく、周囲を取り巻く環境によっても変化することから、運動部の活動において、指導者が生徒の動機づけに与える影響の大きさが示されることとなった。今後、指導者による生徒の動機づけの内在化(自律性)を促す行動、環境を整える手法として、自律性支援行動を運動部活動の指導に取り入れ、実践していくことが期待される

    First observation of MeV gamma-ray universe with bijective imaging spectroscopy using the Electron-Tracking Compton Telescope aboard SMILE-2+

    MeV gamma-rays provide a unique window for the direct measurement of line emissions from radioisotopes, but observations have made little significant progress after COMPTEL/{\it CGRO}. To observe celestial objects in this band, we are developing an electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC), which realizes both bijective imaging spectroscopy and efficient background reduction gleaned from the recoil electron track information. The energy spectrum of the observation target can then be obtained by a simple ON-OFF method using a correctly defined point spread function on the celestial sphere. The performance of celestial object observations was validated on the second balloon SMILE-2+ installed with an ETCC having a gaseous electron tracker with a volume of 30×\times30×\times30 cm3^3. Gamma-rays from the Crab nebula were detected with a significance of 4.0σ\sigma in the energy range 0.15--2.1 MeV with a live time of 5.1 h, as expected before launching. Additionally, the light curve clarified an enhancement of gamma-ray events generated in the Galactic center region, indicating that a significant proportion of the final remaining events are cosmic gamma rays. Independently, the observed intensity and time variation were consistent with the pre-launch estimates except in the Galactic center region. The estimates were based on the total background of extragalactic diffuse, atmospheric, and instrumental gamma-rays after accounting for the variations in the atmospheric depth and rigidity during the level flight. The Crab results and light curve strongly support our understanding of both the detection sensitivity and the background in real observations.
