    The development of the effect of peer monitoring on generosity differs among elementary school-age boys and girls

    The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of peer monitoring on generosity in boys and girls aged 6-12 years. A total of 120 elementary school students played a one-shot dictator game (DG) with and without peer monitoring by classmates. Children decided how to divide 10 chocolates between themselves and a classmate either in a condition in which their allocations were visible to their peers, or in private. While the effect of peer monitoring on the allocation amount in the DG was clearly present in boys, it was not observed in girls. Furthermore, the effect of peer monitoring in boys appeared at the age of 9 years. These results suggest that the motivation to draw peers\u27 attention plays a stronger role for older boys than for girls or younger boys. The potential roles of higher-order theory of mind, social roles, and emergence of secondary sex characteristics on the influence of peer monitoring on generosity shown by boys are discussed

    The methane flux along topographical gradients on a glacier foreland in the High Arctic, Ny-Alesund, Svalbard

    In order to examine the relationship between the methane (CH_4) flux and soil factors and vegetation in High Arctic tundra, we investigated the CH_4 flux along topographical gradients on a glacier foreland in Ny-Alesund, Svalbard (79°N, 12°E). The CH4 flux rates varied widely among sites even within the same vegetation type, ranging from positive (emission) to negative (absorption) values. High CH_4 emission rates were detected on ridges and in sites with a low soil water content, but there was no significant relationship between CH_4 flux rates and soil factors including soil moisture, pH, soil carbon and nitrogen content. Mean values of CH_4 emission and CH_4 absorption were 0.30±0.33 mg m^(-2) h^(-1) (n=12) and 0.11±0.06 mg m^(-2) h^(-1) (n=11), respectively. These findings suggest that the study area is a small source of CH_4 with a mean flux of 0.11 mg CH_4 m^(-2) h^(-1) (0.083 mg C m^(-2) h^(-1)). It was concluded that carbon flux derived from CH_4 accounts for an extremely small proportion of the total carbon flux from soil in this area

    The Role of Cognitive and Emotional Perspective Taking in Economic Decision Making in the Ultimatum Game

    We conducted a simple resource allocation game known as the ultimatum game (UG) with preschoolers to examine the role of cognitive and emotional perspective-taking ability on allocation and rejection behavior. A total of 146 preschoolers played the UG and completed a false belief task and an emotional perspective-taking test. Results showed that cognitive perspective taking ability had a significant positive effect on the proposer\u27s offer and a negative effect on the responder\u27s rejection behavior, whereas emotional perspective taking ability did not impact either the proposer\u27s or responder\u27s behavior. These results imply that the ability to anticipate the responder\u27s beliefs, but not their emotional state, plays an important role in the proposer\u27s choice of a fair allocation in an UG, and that children who have not acquired theory of mind still reject unfair offers

    Microbial biomass in relation to primary succession on arctic deglaciated moraines

    Microbial biomass in arctic soil was examined in relation to a primary succession on arctic deglaciated moraines in Ny-Alesund, Svalbard (79°N, 12°E). Soil samples at four study sites representing different successional stages were collected at every 1cm depth from the soil surface to 3cm depth in early August 1995. Microbial biomass was measured with a substrate-induced respiration procedure. The microbial biomass was highest at the soil surface (0-1cm depth) in all successional stages, and decreased to a negligible amount at 3cm depth. Mean microbial biomass in 0-2cm layer increased from 0.06mgCg^ soil d. w. in the youngest site to 1.03mgC g^ soil d. w. in the oldest site, which is comparable to ecosystems in warmer regions. Throughout all successional stages, there was positive high correlation between soil carbon or nitrogen content and microbial biomass

    Vegetation development and carbon storage on a glacier foreland in the High Arctic, Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard

    AbstractThe distribution of organic carbon and its relationship to vegetation development were examined on a glacier foreland near Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (79°N). In a 0.72-km2 area, we established 43 study plots on three line transects along primary succession from recently deglaciated area to old well-vegetated area. At each plot, we measured the type and percent coverage of vegetation types. The organic carbon content of vegetation, organic soil, and mineral soil samples was determined based on their organic carbon concentration and bulk density. Cluster analysis based on vegetation coverage revealed five types of ground surfaces representing variations in the amounts and allocation patterns of organic carbon. In the later stages of succession, 7%–24% and 31%–40% of organic carbon was contained in the organic and deeper soil layers, respectively. Organic carbon storage in the later stages of succession ranged from 1.1 – 7.9 kg C m−2. A larger amount of organic carbon, including ancient carbon in a raised beach deposit, was expected to be contained in much deeper soil layers. These results suggest that both vegetation development and geological history affect ecosystem carbon storage and that a non-negligible amount of organic carbon is distributed in this High Arctic glacier foreland

    Soil respiration in a high arctic glacier foreland in Ny-Alesund, Svalbard

    Soil respiration rates were measured in a successional glacier foreland in Ny-_lesund, Svalbard, and the amount of CO2 efflux during the plant-growing season was estimated using a simple regression model. Three study sites (Site 1, Site 2 and Site 3) were set up along with the primary succession in the deglaciated area of East Br_gger glacier in Ny-_lesund, Svalbard, Norway (79‹N 12‹E). Another study site, Site RB, was set up on a riverbed in the Bay River between Site 2 and Site 3. Soil respiration (SR), air temperature at 10 cm height (AT), soil surface temperature (SST) and soil temperature at 1 cm depth (ST) were measured at the four study sites with an open-airflow system using an infra-red gas analyzer from July to August, 1995. The mean soil respiration rate varied among the four sites: 6.2, 44, 63 and 3.7 mg CO2 m-2 h-1 at Site 1, Site 2, Site 3 and Site RB, respectively. These differences in the soil respiration rate among the four sites corresponded with the soil organic amount, microbial biomass, and root biomass. The soil respiration rate showed the best correlation with AT at Site 1, Site 2 and Site RB, and with ST at Site 3. The cumulative amount of CO2 efflux calculated using correlation equations obtained from the above relationships between SR and AT or ST was 5.8, 46, 69 and 3.3 g CO2 m-2 at Site 1, Site 2, Site 3 and Site RB, respectively, for two months (from July to August, 1995). These values were extremely low compared to those of warmer ecosystems, such as low-arctic tundra, temperate mixed forests, and tropical moist forests

    Surgical outcomes in patients with small cell lung cancer: comparative analysis of computed tomograpy-detected patients with others

    Background: It is shown that low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening is useful for a reduction in lung-cancer- specific mortality in heavy smokers. However, the information about effectiveness according to the histological types of lung cancer has not been adequately investigated especially small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The present study was performed to see the clinical benefit of CT screening in patients with SCLC following thoracotomy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the outcome in patients with early stage SCLC who initially underwent thoracotomy. The clinical stages and actuarial survival were estimated according to the three means of detection of SCLC: chest CT, radiographic screen, and symptomatically prompted cases. Results: Sixty-nine patients (men/women, 63/6; mean age, 70 years) with SCLC underwent thoracotomy between 1991 and 2010 including chest CT (n = 13), radiographic screening (n = 39), and symptomatically prompted cases (n = 17). Pathological staging information included stage IA (n = 25), IB (n = 8), IIA (n = 13), IIB (n = 5), IIIA (n = 11), and IIIB (n = 7). Median survival time was 30.0 (95% confidence interval (CI): 22.0 to 57.0) months, with overall survival at 5 years of 34.3% (95% CI, 23.47 to 47.3). Nine patients (69%) with stage I were detected by CT which was significantly higher than those in other detection arms. However, there were no significant differences in the survival between CT and other detection arms. Conclusions: CT examination may be useful for detection in early stage SCLC potentially suitable for surgery, but the contribution to better clinical outcome in patients with SCLC remains unclear.ArticleWORLD JOURNAL OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY. 11:61 (2013)journal articl

    Clinical outcomes in elderly patients administered gefitinib as first-line treatment in epidermal growth factor receptor-mutated non-small-cell lung cancer: retrospective analysis in a Nagano Lung Cancer Research Group Study

We analyzed chemotherapy-naive NSCLC patients aged 75 years or older who had EGFR mutations (exon 19 deletion mutation or L858R), who were initially treated with gefitinib (250 mg) once daily in Nagano Prefecture. A total of 55 patients (16 men, 39 women) with a median age of 81.1 years (range; 75-94 years) treated between April 2007 and July 2012 were analyzed. The overall response rate and disease control rate were 72.7 % (95 % confidence interval (CI); 59.5-82.9 %) and 92.7 % (95 % CI; 82.0-97.6 %), respectively. Median progression-free survival and overall survival from the start of gefitinib treatment were 13.8 months (95 % CI; 9.9-18.8 months) and 29.1 months (95 % CI; 22.4 months-not reached), respectively. Two-year survival rate was 59.5 % (95 % CI; 41.0-78.0 %). Major grade 3 toxicities were skin rash (1.8 %) and increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase or alanine aminotransferase (7.3 %). First-line treatment with gefitinib for elderly EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients was effective and well tolerated. The results suggest that first-line gefitinib should be considered as a preferable standard treatment in elderly patients with advanced NSCLC harboring EGFR mutations.ArticleMEDICAL ONCOLOGY. 30(1):45 (2013)journal articl

    An Assessment by In Situ Hybridization Method for Pathogens of Severe Respiratory Infection

    It has been shown that the in situ hybridization (ISH)method for the detection of phagocyted bacteria in polymorphonuclear neutrophils is more sensitive than conventional blood culture in patients with sepsis.The present study was designed to further evaluate the clinical utility of the ISH method, using a commercially available kit (Hybrizep(R)), for detecting pathogens in patients with severe respiratory infections. Peripheral blood was taken from patients with severe respiratory infections for both routine blood culture and the ISH method,respectively.In addition,focal samples including sputum,bronchoalveolar lavage,central and thoracic catheter, etc. were simultaneously examined for bacterial culture. A total number of 22 specimens was examined.The positive cases by ISH were 50.0% in the respiratory infections,which were significantly higher than those in blood cultures (9.1%).However, identical pathogens in the ISH method were not isolated from blood and/or other sources in respiratory sites. These findings suggest a possibility of high frequency of bacteremia or multifactorious pathogens in severe respiratory infections.The ISH method may provide additional information on serious respiratory infections for the detection of bacteremia. However, the clinical utility by the ISH method for patients with severe respiratory infection remains undetermined.
