    Reduction of spatter generation using atmospheric gas in laser powder bed fusion of Ti-6Al-4V

    Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), a typical additive manufacturing (AM) process, is a promising approach that enables high-accuracy manufacturing of arbitrary structures; therefore, it has been utilized in the aerospace and medical fields. However, several unexplained phenomena significantly affect the quality of fabricated components. In particular, it has been reported that the generation of spatters adversely affects the stability of fabrication process and degrades the performance of the fabricated components. To realize high-quality components, it is essential to suppress the generation of spatters. Thus far, the suppression of spatter generation has been attempted based on the process parameters; however, this has not been adequately discussed in terms of the fabrication atmosphere. Therefore, in this study, we focused on the fabrication atmosphere and investigated spatter generation using gas with different physical properties rather than conventionally used argon. It was observed that the spatter generation during the fabrication of the Ti6Al4V alloy could be significantly suppressed by changing the atmospheric gas, even under constant LPBF process parameters.     Pose Estimation for Human Wearing Loose-Fitting Clothes: Obtaining Ground Truth Posture Using HFR Camera and Blinking LEDs

    Human pose estimation, particularly in athletes, can help improve their performance. However, this estimation is difficult using existing methods, such as human annotation, if the subjects wear loose-fitting clothes such as ski/snowboard wears. This study developed a method for obtaining the ground truth data on two-dimensional (2D) poses of a human wearing loose-fitting clothes. This method uses fast-flushing light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The subjects were required to wear loose-fitting clothes and place the LED on the target joints. The LEDs were observed directly using a camera by selecting thin filmy loose-fitting clothes. The proposed method captures the scene at 240 fps by using a high-frame-rate camera and renders two 30 fps image sequences by extracting LED-on and -off frames. The temporal differences between the two video sequences can be ignored, considering the speed of human motion. The LED-on video was used to manually annotate the joints and thus obtain the ground truth data. Additionally, the LED-off video, equivalent to a standard video at 30 fps, confirmed the accuracy of existing machine learning-based methods and manual annotations. Experiments demonstrated that the proposed method can obtain ground truth data for standard RGB videos. Further, it was revealed that neither manual annotation nor the state-of-the-art pose estimator obtains the correct position of target joints.Comment: Extended abstract of WACV2023 workshop on Computer Vision 4 Winter Sport

    Fabrication of submicron La2x_{2-x}Srx_{x}CuO4_{4} intrinsic Josephson junction stacks

    Intrinsic Josephson junction (IJJ) stacks of cuprate superconductors have potential to be implemented as intrinsic phase qubits working at relatively high temperatures. We report success in fabricating submicron La2x_{2-x}Srx_{x}CuO4_{4} (LSCO) IJJ stacks carved out of single crystals. We also show a new fabrication method in which argon ion etching is performed after focused ion beam etching. As a result, we obtained an LSCO IJJ stack in which resistive multi-branches appeared. It may be possible to control the number of stacked IJJs with an accuracy of a single IJJ by developing this method.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Fabrication of binary FeSe superconducting wires by novel diffusion process

    We report successful fabrication of multi- and mono-core FeSe wires with high transport critical current density Jc using a simple in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The seven-core wire showed transport Jc of as high as 1027 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature Tczero was observed at 10.5 K in the wire-samples, which is about 2 K higher than that of bulk FeSe. The Fe-diffusion PIT method is suitable for fabricating multi-core wires of the binary FeSe superconductors with superior properties.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    In vivo experimental study of anterior cervical fusion using bioactive polyetheretherketone in a canine model

    Background: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a widely accepted biomaterial, especially in the field of spinal surgery. However, PEEK is not able to directly integrate with bone tissue, due to its bioinertness. To overcome this drawback, various studies have described surface coating approaches aimed at increasing the bioactivity of PEEK surfaces. Among those, it has been shown that the recently developed sol-gel TiO2 coating could provide PEEK with the ability to bond with bone tissue in vivo without the use of a bone graft. Objective: This in vivo experimental study using a canine model determined the efficacy of bioactive TiO2-coated PEEK for anterior cervical fusion. Methods: Sol-gel–derived TiO2 coating, which involves sandblasting and acid treatment, was used to give PEEK bone-bonding ability. The cervical interbody spacer, which was designed to fit the disc space of a beagle, was fabricated using bioactive TiO2-coated PEEK. Both uncoated PEEK (control) and TiO2-coated PEEK spacers were implanted into the cervical intervertebral space of beagles (n = 5 for each type). After the 3-month survival period, interbody fusion success was evaluated based on μ-CT imaging, histology, and manual palpation analyses. Results: Manual palpation analyses indicated a 60% (3/5 cases) fusion (no gap between bone and implants) rate for the TiO2-coated PEEK group, indicating clear advantage over the 0% (0/5 cases) fusion rate for the uncoated PEEK group. The bony fusion rate of the TiO2-coated PEEK group was 40% according to μCT imaging; however, it was 0% of for the uncoated PEEK group. Additionally, the bone–implant contact ratio calculated using histomorphometry demonstrated a better contact ratio for the TiO2-coated PEEK group than for the uncoated PEEK group (mean, 32.6% vs 3.2%; p = 0.017). Conclusions: The TiO2-coated bioactive PEEK implant demonstrated better fusion rates and bone-bonding ability than did the uncoated PEEK implant in the canine anterior cervical fusion model. Bioactive PEEK, which has bone-bonding ability, could contribute to further improvements in clinical outcomes for spinal interbody fusion

    Colonization by Clostridium difficile of neonates in a hospital, and infants and children in three day-care facilities of Kanazawa, Japan

    The intestinal-carriage rates of i>Clostridium difficile in neonates hospitalized in the University Hospital’s Center for Perinatal and Reproductive Health and in infants and children enrolled in two day-nurseries and a kindergarten were examined. Swab samples from the floors of these facilities were also analyzed to determine the extent of environmental contamination by this organism. C. difficile was found in the stool of only one of 40 neonates during the normal 1-week stay in the hospital after delivery. The isolate from the neonate was identical to that of her mother, as determined by PCR ribotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis, and toxin gene type, suggesting that the C. difficile-positive neonate acquired the organism from her mother rather than from the environment. By contrast, 47 (48.0%) of the 98 infants and children, comprising 50 enrolled in two daynurseries who were ≤3 years old and 48 enrolled in a kindergarten who were 2–5 years old, carried C. difficile. The carriage rate in infants under 2 years of age was much higher (84.4%) than in children 2 years old and older (30.3%). When analyzed according to age group, the carriage rates were 100, 75.0, 45.5, 24.0, 38.5, and 23.5% in infants and children 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years old, respectively. The observation that several children were colonized with the same type of C. difficile strain in each day-care facility, and that the floors of day-nursery A and kindergarten C were contaminated with C. difficile strains identical to those colonizing the intestines of children enrolled in those facilities suggests that cross-infection of C. difficile among children occurs through C. difficile-carrying children or their contaminated environments.     Clinical characteristics of elderly depressive patients with low metaiodobenzylguanidine uptake

    BACKGROUND: Recently, depression with Lewy body pathology before the appearance of parkinsonism and cognitive dysfunction has been drawing attention. Low cardiac metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake is helpful for early differentiation of Lewy body disease (LBD) from late-onset psychiatric disorders even before parkinsonism or dementia appears. In this study, we used MIBG uptake as a tool in suspected LBD, and evaluated the relationship of MIBG results to clinical characteristics and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Fifty-two elderly inpatients with depression were included in this study. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was administered at admission, and 123 I-MIBG cardiac scintigraphy was performed. Of 52 patients, 38 had normal and 14 had reduced MIBG uptake. RESULTS: Correlation analyses of the late phase heart-to-mediastinum (H/M) ratio on the MIBG test and each item of the HDRS revealed that the H/M ratio was significantly correlated with scores of 'agitation', 'anxiety-somatic', and 'retardation' on the HDRS. Mean HDRS composite scores of 'somatic and psychic anxiety (Marcos)' and 'somatic anxiety/somatization factor (Pancheri)' were higher in the low uptake group than in the normal uptake group. CONCLUSION: Elderly patients with depression who manifested an obvious somatic anxiety tend to show low MIBG uptake, and are more likely to have Lewy body pathology

    Two solvated cobalt(ii) terpyridine complexes, [Co(MeO-terpy)2](BF4)2·H2O (1·H2O) and [Co(MeO-terpy)2](BF4)2·acetone (1·acetone) were prepared.
