    A Review of Psychological Studies on Wisdom

    The concept of wisdom is viewed as one of the key concepts in the explaining unique and progressive aspects of performance in adulthood now. The primary purpose of this article is to review the psychological studies on wisdom. At first, people\u27s implicit theories of wisdom and wise persons are discussed. It is evident that people have systematic implicit theories of wisdom and wise persons, and that wisdom is most distinguished from intelligence in the dimension of advice and judgment.     Effects of peripheral administration of rat urotensinII on circulation, and on distribution of c-Fos immunoreactive neurons in the brain

    The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of intravenous injection of urotensinII on the systemic blood pressure and heart rate, and to examine whether the intraperitoneal administration of urotensinII evoked the stimulation of central neurons. Urotensin, originally isolated fish neuro-endocrine systems, is a peptide which consists of 12 amino acids. Lately human urotensinII was identified to be consisted from 11 amino acids. Receptors of urotensin have been found to highly distribute in the mammalian cadrdiovascular systems. It has been reported that urotensin evoked contraction of thoracic artery, while the dilatation of blood vessels was alternatively induced. In this study, we examined the effects of peripheral injection of rat urotensinII consisted of 14 amino acids on the circulation and on the activity of neurons in the brain. It was found that intravenous injection of rat urotensinII elicited dose-dependently decrease in blood pressure, and increase or decrease in heart rate. To examine whether an intraperitoneal injection of rat urotensinII induced an excitation of central neurons, we used immunohistochemical method to study the expression of c-Fos protein in neurons of the rat brain after intraperitoneal injection of rat urotensinII (test experiment). In the control experiment rat was intraperitoneally injected saline solution without rat urotensinII. It was found that intraperitoneal injection of rat urotensinII induced expression of c-Fos protein in several nuclei in the brain. These results suggested that rat urotensinII might exhibit physiological functions via central neuronal pathway as well as peripheral direct pathways

    The Tokyo Oldest Old Survey on Total Health (TOOTH): A longitudinal cohort study of multidimensional components of health and well-being

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>With the rapid worldwide increase in the oldest old population, considerable concern has arisen about the social and economic burden of diseases and disability in this age group. Understanding of multidimensional structure of health and its life-course trajectory is an essential prerequisite for effective health care delivery. Therefore, we organized an interdisciplinary research team consisting of geriatricians, dentists, psychologists, sociologists, and epidemiologists to conduct a longitudinal observational study.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>For the Tokyo Oldest Old Survey on Total Health (TOOTH) study, a random sample of inhabitants of the city of Tokyo, aged 85 years or older, was drawn from the basic city registry. The baseline comprehensive assessment consists of an in-home interview, a self-administered questionnaire, and a medical/dental examination. To perform a wide variety of biomedical measurements, including carotid ultrasonography and a detailed dental examination, participants were invited to our study center at Keio University Hospital. For those who were not able to visit the study center, we provided the option of a home-based examination, in which participants were simultaneously visited by a geriatrician and a dentist. Of 2875 eligible individuals, a total of 1152 people were recruited, of which 542 completed both the in-home interview and the medical/dental examination, with 442 completed the in-home interview only, and another 168 completed self or proxy-administered data collection only. Carotid ultrasonography was completed in 458 subjects, which was 99.6% of the clinic visitors (n = 460). Masticatory assessment using a colour-changeable chewing gum was completed in 421 subjects, a 91.5% of the clinic visitors.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Our results demonstrated the feasibility of a new comprehensive study that incorporated non-invasive measurements of subclinical diseases and a detailed dental examination aiming at community-dwelling individuals aged 85 years or older. The bimodal recruitment strategy is critically important to capture a broad range of health profiles among the oldest old. Results form the TOOTH study will help develop new models of health promotion, which are expected to contribute to an improvement in lifelong health and well-being.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>This study has been registered in the UMIN-Clinical Trial Registry (CTR), ID: UMIN000001842.</p

    Randomized phase II study of pemetrexed or pemetrexed plus bevacizumab for elderly patients with previously untreated non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer: Results of the Lung Oncology Group in Kyushu (LOGIK1201)

    Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety, we conducted a randomized phase II study of pemetrexed (Pem) versus Pem + bevacizumab (Bev) for elderly patients with non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSqNSCLC). Patients and methods: The eligibility criteria were as follows: NSqNSCLC, no prior therapy,stage IIIB/IV disease or postoperative recurrence, age: ?75 years, performance status (PS): 0?1, and adequate bone marrow function. The patients were randomly assigned (1:1 ratio)to receive Pem or Pem + Bev. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS).The secondary endpoints were the response rate, OS, toxicities, and cost-effectiveness. Results: Forty-one patients were enrolled and 40 (20 from each group) were assessable. Their characteristics were as follows: male/female = 23/17; median age (range) = 78 (75?83); stage IIIB/IV/postoperative recurrence = 1/30/9; PS 0/1 = 11/29. All cases involved adenocarcinoma.There was no significant intergroup difference in PFS and the median PFS (95% confidence interval) values of the Pem and Pem + Bev groups were 5.4 (3.0?7.4) and 5.5 (3.6?9.9) months, respectively (p = 0.66). The response rate was significantly higher in the Pem + Bev group(15% vs. 55%, p = 0.0146), and there was no significant difference in OS (median: 16.0 vs. 16.4 months, p = 0.58). Grade 3 and 4 leukopenia, neutropenia,and thrombocytopenia were seen in 10 and 30, 20 and 55, and 5 and 5 cases, respectively. Drug costs were higher in the Pem + Bev group (median: 1,522,008 vs. 3,368,428 JPY, p = 0.01). No treatment-related deaths occurred. Conclusions: Adding Bev to Pem did not result in improved survival in the elderly NSqNSCLC patients. Compared with Pem + Bev, Pem monotherapy had similar effects on survival, a more favorable toxicity profile, and was more cost-effective in elderly NSqNSCLC patients. Pem monotherapy might be one of the optional regimen for NSqNSCLC patients aged ?75 years
