    Clustering Method for Time-Series Images Using Quantum-Inspired Computing Technology

    Time-series clustering serves as a powerful data mining technique for time-series data in the absence of prior knowledge about clusters. A large amount of time-series data with large size has been acquired and used in various research fields. Hence, clustering method with low computational cost is required. Given that a quantum-inspired computing technology, such as a simulated annealing machine, surpasses conventional computers in terms of fast and accurately solving combinatorial optimization problems, it holds promise for accomplishing clustering tasks that are challenging to achieve using existing methods. This study proposes a novel time-series clustering method that leverages an annealing machine. The proposed method facilitates an even classification of time-series data into clusters close to each other while maintaining robustness against outliers. Moreover, its applicability extends to time-series images. We compared the proposed method with a standard existing method for clustering an online distributed dataset. In the existing method, the distances between each data are calculated based on the Euclidean distance metric, and the clustering is performed using the k-means++ method. We found that both methods yielded comparable results. Furthermore, the proposed method was applied to a flow measurement image dataset containing noticeable noise with a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 1. Despite a small signal variation of approximately 2%, the proposed method effectively classified the data without any overlap among the clusters. In contrast, the clustering results by the standard existing method and the conditional image sampling (CIS) method, a specialized technique for flow measurement data, displayed overlapping clusters. Consequently, the proposed method provides better results than the other two methods, demonstrating its potential as a superior clustering method.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Effects of Starvation on Brain Short Neuropeptide F-1, -2, and -3 Levels and Short Neuropeptide F Receptor Expression Levels of the Silkworm, Bombyx mori

    In our previous report, we demonstrated the possibility that various regulatory neuropeptides influence feeding behavior in the silkworm, Bombyx mori. Among these feeding-related neuropeptides, short neuropeptide F (sNPF) exhibited feeding-accelerating activity when injected into B. mori larvae. Like other insect sNPFs, the deduced amino acid sequence of the cDNA encoding the sNPF precursor appears to produce multiple sNPF and sNPF-related peptides in B. mori. The presence of three sNPFs, sNPF-1, sNPF-2, and sNPF-3, in the brain of B. mori larvae was confirmed by direct MALDI-TOF mass spectrometric profiling. In addition, all three sNPFs are present in other larval ganglia. The presence of sNPF mRNA in the central nervous system (CNS) was also confirmed by Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Semi-quantitative analyses of sNPFs in the larval brain using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry further revealed that brain sNPF levels decrease in response to starvation, and that they recover with the resumption of feeding. These data suggest that sNPFs were depleted by the starvation process. Furthermore, food deprivation decreased the transcriptional levels of the sNPF receptor (BNGR-A10) in the brain and CNS, suggesting that the sNPF system is dependent on the feeding state of the insect and that the sNPF system may be linked to locomotor activity associated with foraging behavior. Since the injection of sNPFs accelerated the onset of feeding in B. mori larvae, we concluded that sNPFs are strongly related to feeding behavior. In addition, semi-quantitative MS analyses revealed that allatostatin, which is present in the larval brain, is also reduced in response to starvation, whereas the peptide level of Bommyosuppressin was not affected by different feeding states

    Exercise-Induced Post-Ischemic Left Ventricular Delayed Relaxation or Diastolic Stunning Is it a Reliable Marker in Detecting Coronary Artery Disease?

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to determine whether post-ischemic left ventricular (LV) delayed relaxation could be detected by using strain imaging (SI) derived from 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with stable effort angina.BackgroundRegional LV delayed relaxation during early diastole is a sensitive sign of acute myocardial ischemia and may persist beyond recovery of exercise-induced ischemia.MethodsRegional LV transverse strain changes during the first one-third of diastole duration (strain imaging diastolic index [SI-DI]) were determined at baseline and 5 and 10 min after the exercise test in 162 patients with stable effort angina. The ratio of SI-DI before and after exercise (SI-DI ratio) was used to identify regional LV delayed relaxation.ResultsA total of 117 patients had significant (≥50% of luminal diameter) coronary stenoses. The mean SI-DI decreased from 78.0 ± 9.7% to 27.6 ± 16.0% (p < 0.0001) in 191 territories perfused by coronary arteries with significant stenoses 5 min after the treadmill exercise, whereas it remained unchanged in 280 territories perfused by arteries with nonsignificant stenoses. Ten minutes after exercise, regional delayed relaxation was still observed in 85% of territories perfused by stenotic coronary arteries. An SI-DI ratio with a cutoff value of 0.74 had a sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 93% to detect significant coronary stenosis in the receiver-operator characteristic curve.ConclusionsDetection of post-ischemic regional LV delayed relaxation or diastolic stunning after treadmill exercise using SI is a sensitive and reliable method for the detection of coronary artery disease

    Early-term birth and hypoglycaemia

    Background : The effect of early-term birth on the development of hypoglycaemia in large-for gestational-age (LGA) neonates is yet to be clarified. This study aimed to clarify the association between hypoglycaemia and early-term birth in LGA neonates. Methods : This single-centre retrospective cohort study evaluated LGA neonates born at term at Tsurugi Municipal Handa Hospital, Japan. Blood glucose levels were measured immediately and at 1, 2, and 4 hours after birth. The association between early-term birth and hypoglycaemia was evaluated using logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of severe hypoglycaemia and hypoglycaemia according to its timing of development was analysed using Fisher’s exact test. Results : In total, 295 neonates were included. Among them, 113 neonates (38.3%) were born at early term and 91 infants (30.8%) had hypoglycaemia. Logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between early-term birth and hypoglycaemia (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval] : 2.691 [1.597 to 4.535]). However, there was no significant between-group difference among those with severe hypoglycaemia. Conclusions : Among LGA neonates, early-term birth is positively associated with neonatal hypoglycaemia. This indicates that among LGA neonates, those born at early term require more careful observation for hypoglycaemia than do those born at later term
