Specific-heat study on successive magnetic transitions in α-Dy2S3 single crystals under magnetic fields

Specific heat measurements in magnetic fields have been performed on !-Dy2S3 single crystal that shows successive magnetic transitions at TN1 = 11.4 K and TN2 = 6.4 K. The specific heat in no magnetic field exhibits sharp peaks at both temperatures of TN1 and TN2.The change of magnetic entropy across each transition is estimated as Rln2/2 per mol-Dy,which suggests magnetic moments on only one Dy site between two crystallographically inequivalent Dy sites order at each transition temperature. When the magnetic field is applied along the b-axis of the orthorhombic system, two peaks of the specific heat shift toward lower temperatures. On the other hand, the magnetic field perpendicular to the b-axis shifts the peaks toward higher temperatures. The TN1 shifts to 9.6 K (H// b) and 12.5 K (H⊥b) under the magnetic field of 2 T. The peak of TN2 broadens gradually with increasing magnetic field for each direction, and the peak is consequently obscure under the field of 2 T

A Financial System Perspective on Japan's Experience in the Late 1980s

This paper revisits the events of the 1980s bubble in Japan in light of the lessons learned from the subprime crisis in the United States. Our focus is on the role played by sectoral developments in the financial system in Japan. We highlight the transformation of a subset of non-financial firms (the large manufacturing firms) from being net debtors to the banks to becoming net creditors to the banks, thereby becoming part of the financial intermediary sector. In this way, large manufacturing firms in Japan played the role of surrogate wholesale banks that increased the overall supply of credit to the economy. When good borrowers already had credit and yet loose monetary conditions encouraged greater credit supply, credit availability to marginal borrowers and to real estate-related sectors increased. We discuss the role of market conditions and monetary policy in this development.Balance sheet, Commitment, Credit supply, Financial liberalization, Financial system perspective, Japan, Subprime crisis

Phase stability of hafnium oxide and zirconium oxide on silicon substrate

Phase stabilities of Hf-Si-O and Zr-Si-O have been studied with first-principles and thermodynamic modeling. From the obtained thermodynamic descriptions, phase diagrams pertinent to thin film processing were calculated. We found that the relative stability of the metal silicates with respect to their binary oxides plays a critical role in silicide formation. It was observed that both the HfO2_2/Si and ZrO2_2/Si interfaces are stable in a wide temperature range and silicide may form at low temperatures, partially at the HfO2_2/Si interface.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

A study of the measurement precision of the Higgs boson decaying into tau pairs at the ILC

We evaluate the measurement precision of the production cross section times the branching ratio of the Higgs boson decaying into tau lepton pairs at the International Linear Collider (ILC). We analyze various final states associated with the main production mechanisms of the Higgs boson, the Higgs-strahlung and WW-fusion processes. The statistical precision of the production cross section times the branching ratio is estimated to be 2.6% and 6.9% for the Higgs-strahlung andWW-fusion processes, respectively, with the nominal integrated luminosities assumed in the ILC Technical Design Report; the precision improves to 1.0% and 3.4% with the running scenario including possible luminosity upgrades. The study provides a reference performance of the ILC for future phenomenological analyses.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 9 tables, revised from v
