Using Video Teaching Materials to Promote the Verbalization of Emotions and the Acquisition of Other People’s Perspectives in a Young Child with Behavioral Difficulties

The occurrences of pervasive developmental disabilities and a four-year-old boy’s fighting behavior over toys with his sibling were reduced by showing him video teaching materials intended to promote the verbalization of emotions and the acquisition of other people’s perspectives. The video teaching materials depicted a scene of the subject playing with his sibling. In the video, the subject says, “wait,” when his sibling tries to take away a toy he is playing with. We also inserted other lines into the narration, such as,“ when not using the toy, lending it to your sibling will make him or her happy.” During the intervention period after watching the video, the frequency of occurrences of fights over toys stabilized compared to that of the baseline period. However, the frequency of occurrences did not decrease, nor could we confirm the retention of the intervention effects. We did observe scenes in which the subject repeated lines from the video’s narration; however, due to instances such as one in which the sibling took away the toy even though the subject said, “wait,” we inferred that the subject was unable to accumulate enough successful experiences to retain the intervention effects

Perceived Efficacy and Anxiety of Teachers in Japan toward Supporting Students with Chronic Illness in Mainstream School

The objective of this study was to examine mainstream school teachers’ anxiety and selfefficacy to teaching students with chronic illness. A survey was completed by 59 elementary and 44 junior high school teachers in Japan. Results indicated that the majority of teacher respondents perceived themselves as inadequate to teach students with chronic illness due to lack of practical knowledge and experience. A high proportion of respondents indicated that they had no academic training (62.1%) and no teaching experience (72.8%) for supporting students with chronic illness. On the other hand, there is a positive relationship between selfefficacy, anxiety level and academic training or teaching experience for supporting students with chronic illness. That is, teachers with practical experience teaching students with chronic illness in the classroom and teachers with more academic training in inclusive approaches demonstrated higher efficacy and lower anxiety than teachers without these experiences or with less training in inclusive teaching approaches. All teachers must be equipped with the extensive knowledge of how best to assist students with chronic illness. Additional efforts are needed to adequately support students with chronic illness in the regular education classroom

Unraveling the Nature of Unidentified High Galactic Latitude Fermi/LAT Gamma-ray Sources with Suzaku

We report on the results of deep X-ray follow-up observations of four unidentified Fermi/LAT gamma-ray sources at high Galactic latitudes using Suzaku. The studied objects were detected with high significance during the first 3 months of Fermi/LAT operation, and subsequently better localized in the Fermi/LAT 1 year catalog (1FGL). Possible associations with pulsars and active galaxies have subsequently been discussed, and our observations provide an important contribution to this debate. In particular, an X-ray point source was found within the 95% confidence error circle of 1FGL J1231.1-1410. X-ray spectrum is well-fitted by a blackbody with an additional power-law. This supports the recently claimed identification of this source with a millisecond pulsar (MSP) PSR J1231-1411. Concerning 1FGL J1311.7-3429, two X-ray sources were found within the LAT error circle. Even though the X-ray spectral and variability properties were accessed, their nature and relationship with the gamma-ray source remain uncertain. We found several weak X-ray sources in the field of 1FGL J1333.2+5056, one coinciding with CLASS J1333+5057. We argue the available data are consistent with the association between these two objects. Finally, we have detected an X-ray source in the vicinity of 1FGL J2017.3+0603. This object was recently suggested to be associated with a newly discovered MSP PSR J2017+0603, because of the spatial-coincidence and the gamma-ray pulse detection. We have only detected the X-ray counterpart of the CLASS J2017+0603, while we determined an X-ray flux upper limit at the pulsar position. All in all, our studies indicate while a significant fraction of unidentified high Galactic latitude gamma-ray sources is related to the pulsar and blazar phenomena, associations with other classes of astrophysical objects are still valid options.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Ap

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 2 Tax protein induces interleukin 2-independent growth in a T-cell line

BACKGROUND: While human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia, HTLV type 2 (HTLV-2) is not associated with this malignancy. Accumulating evidence suggests that Tax, a transforming protein of HTLV-1 or HTLV-2, plays a crucial role in the distinctive pathogenesis of these two infections. We herein examined whether Tax2 by itself has a growth promoting activity in a mouse T-cell line CTLL-2, and compared the activity with that of Tax1. RESULTS: We found that Tax2 converts the cell growth of CTLL-2 from an interleukin(IL)-2-dependent growth into an independent one. Cyclosporine A, an inhibitor of transcription factor NFAT, inhibited the growth of two out of four Tax2-transformed CTLL-2 cells, but it had little effect on two Tax1-transformed cells. While the HTLV-2-transformed human T-cell lines produce a significant amount of IL-2, Tax2-transformed CTLL-2 cells only produced a minimal amount of IL-2. These results thus suggest that NFAT-inducible gene(s) other than IL-2 play a role in the cell growth of Tax2-transformed CTLL-2 cells. CONCLUSION: These results show that HTLV-2 Tax2 by itself has a growth promoting activity toward a T-cell line CTLL-2, and the CTLL-2 assay used in this study may therefore be a useful tool for comparing the activity of Tax2 with that of Tax1 in T-cells, thereby elucidating the mechanism of HTLV-1 specific leukemogenesis

Two cases of primary small cell carcinoma of the stomach

We report 2 cases of small cell carcinoma (SmCC) of the stomach with distant metastasis that were treated with the same chemotherapeutic regimens as used to treat small cell lung cancer. Although the mean survival of patients with SmCC of the stomach is reported to be only 7 months, our patients survived for 15 and 14 months, respectively. In our experience, these chemotherapeutic regimens might provide a survival benefit for patients with SmCC of the stomach, although they demonstrated no remarkable antitumor effects.</p
