Visualizing color term differences based on images from the web

    Get PDF
AbstractColor terms are used to express light spectrum characteristics captured by human vision, and color naming across languages partition color spaces differently. Such partition differences have been surveyed through several empirical experiments that employ Munsell color chips. We propose a novel visualization method for color terms based on thousands of images collected from query results provided by an image search engines such as Google. A series of experiments was conducted using eight basic color terms in seven languages. Pixel values in the images are counted to form color histograms according to the color pallet used in the world color survey. The visualization results can be summarized as follows: (1) Japanese and Korean color terms have wider distributions in the color space than terms in other languages do and (2) color visualizations for color terms pink and brown are affected by their links to proper nouns

The cross-correlation search for a hot spot of gravitational waves : Numerical study for point spread function

The cross-correlation search for gravitational wave, which is known as 'radiometry', has been previously applied to map of the gravitational wave stochastic background in the sky and also to target on gravitational wave from rotating neutron stars/pulsars. We consider the Virgo cluster where may be appear as `hot spot' spanning few pixels in the sky in radiometry analysis. Our results show that sufficient signal to noise ratio can be accumulated with integration times of the order of a year. We also construct numerical simulation of radiometry analysis, assuming current constructing/upgrading ground-based detectors. Point spread function of the injected sources are confirmed by numerical test. Typical resolution of radiometry analysis is a few square degree which corresponds to several thousand pixels of sky mapping.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, Amaldi 9 & NRD

Probability Distribution of Maxima of Random Surface

    Get PDF
The joint probability distributions are obtained of the extremum value, principal curvatures and the angle of their orientation of a random surface described by a homogeneous Gaussian random field. The probability density for the extrema is calculated as a marginal distribution, and is cast into a Gram-Charlier series in a form convenient for numerical calculation. Probability densities are numerically calculated for some isotropic spectral densities for an application in the microwave backscattering from ocean waves. Key Words : random surface, extremum, curvature, probability density, Gram-Charlier serie

The base of Menshenbildung is cultivated in infancy, and infant education is a firm basis of the education in subsequent years. We can not discuss the education without considering the importance of the infant education. In this paper, we reconsider playing and learning of the infant, taking up the infant education and its adjacent domains. First, we consider the necessity to make playing a kind of learning and suggest concrete measures. Secondly, referring computer games and traditional playing, we examine playground equipments which will activate infants' play. Thirdly, we point out that there is still an insuperable barrier between primany education and infant education. We also verify that the creative education stands on the edge of crisis, relating the current of an exaggerated importance on intellectual training. And finally, we discuss some problems concerning the child-raising support

    Get PDF
This paper proposes specific frameworks and clarifies the manner in which civil participation and autonomy should be implemented in the community planning process in Sasebo, Nagasaki. The proposal is made after examining the present state and issues of the policies implemented in civil cooperative community planning, which have been initiated at Sasebo in recent years. We initiated our research by reviewing "the Civil Meetings on Education" and "Sasebo Jyuku", the first form of civil participation in Sasebo, and then proceeded to examine "the Civil Round Table Discussions". Eventually this lead to the discussion of development in civil participation and cooperation in the three implemented plans, the Civil Cooperative Promotion Plan, Comprehensive Plan and Regional Welfare Plan. Although these policies have led to several developments, it must be noted that several issues have also emerged as a consequence. With respect to the important issues of establishing a civil autonomy, we concluded this paper by highlighting the necessity of establishing a regional community as the base of civil autonomy, and the establishment of a systematic framework for the city, as a whole, to work towards civil autonomy

Detecting gravitational waves from inspiraling binaries with a network of detectors : coherent strategies by correlated detectors

We discuss the coherent search strategy to detect gravitational waves from inspiraling compact binaries by a network of correlated laser interferometric detectors. From the maximum likelihood ratio statistic, we obtain a coherent statistic which is slightly different from and generally better than what we obtained in our previous work. In the special case when the cross spectrum of two detectors normalized by the power spectrum density is constant, the new statistic agrees with the old one. The quantitative difference of the detection probability for a given false alarm rate is also evaluated in a simple case.Comment: 4 pages, 1 Postscript figures, uses revtex4.st

Upper Limit on Gravitational Wave Backgrounds at 0.2 Hz with Torsion-bar Antenna

We present the first upper limit on gravitational wave (GW) backgrounds at an unexplored frequency of 0.2 Hz using a torsion-bar antenna (TOBA). A TOBA was proposed to search for low-frequency GWs. We have developed a small-scaled TOBA and successfully found {\Omega}gw(f) < 4.3 \times 1017 at 0.2 Hz as demonstration of the TOBA's capabilities, where {\Omega}gw (f) is the GW energy density per logarithmic frequency interval in units of the closure density. Our result is the first nonintegrated limit to bridge the gap between the LIGO band (around 100 Hz) and the Cassini band (10-6 - 10-4 Hz).Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Vector profile and gauge invariant observables of string field theory solutions for constant magnetic field background

We study profiles and gauge invariant observables of classical solutions corresponding to a constant magnetic field on a torus in open string field theory. We numerically find that the profile is not discontinuous on the torus, although the solution describes topologically nontrivial configurations in the context of low energy effective theory. From the gauge invariant observables, we show that the solution provide correct couplings of closed strings to a D-brane with constant magnetic field.Comment: 1+20 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor correction

Tumour shapes and fully automated range compensation for heavy charged particle radiotherapy

    Get PDF
An idea of computer-controlled range-compensating system for heavy charged particle radiotherapy, the multibar compensator, is proposed. By stacking multiple energy-absorbing layers along the beam, each of which has structure and behaviour similar to those of a multileaf collimator, variable range compensation will be achieved. The analysis of the conventional range compensators actually used for treatment concluded that the proposed system would not seriously degrade the treatment quality for the most cases, except for tumours in head and neck region where 1-mm precision may be required. The system will even be able to coexist with the conventional range compensators to provide either method depending on clinical situations
