    Micro heat exchanger by using MEMS impinging jets

    A micro impinging-jet heat exchanger is presented here. Heat transfer is studied for single jet, slot arrays and jet arrays. In order to facilitate micro heat transfer measurements with these devices, a MEMS sensor chip, which has an 8 x 8 temperature-sensor array on one side, and an integrated heater on the other side has been designed and fabricated. This sensor chip allows 2-D surface temperature measurement with various jets impinging on it. It is found that micro impinging jets can be highly efficient when compared to existing macro impinging-jet microelectronics packages such as IBM 4381. For example, using a single nozzle jet (500-μm diameter driven by 5 psig pressure), the sensor chip (2 x 2 cm^2) temperature can be cooled down from 70 to 33°C. The cooling becomes more efficient when nozzle arrays (4x5 over 1 cm^2 area) are used under the same driving pressure. Interestingly, although higher driving pressure gives better cooling (lower surface temperature), the cooling efficiency, defined as h/0.5pv^2, is actually higher for lower driving pressure

    A suspended microchannel with integrated temperature sensors for high-pressure flow studies

    A freestanding microchannel, with integrated temperature sensors, has been developed for high-pressure flow studies. These microchannels are approximately 20ÎĽm x 2ÎĽm x 4400ÎĽm, and are suspended above 80 ÎĽm deep cavities, bulk micromachined using BrF3 dry etch. The calibration of the lightly boron-doped thermistor-type sensors shows that the resistance sensitivity of these integrated sensors is parabolic with respect to temperature and linear with respect to pressure. Volumetric flow rates of N2 in the microchannel were measured at inlet pressures up to 578 psig. The discrepancy between the data and theory results from the flow acceleration in a channel, the non-parabolic velocity profile, and the bulging of the channel. Bulging effects were evaluated by using incompressible water flow measurements, which also measures 1.045x10^-3N-s/m^2 for the viscosity of DI water.     Synchronous and lagged relationships between CEO pay and performance of quality companies

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the synchronous and lagged relationships between CEOs\u27 pay and the performance of a group of public companies that had won a very prestigious award: the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA). Design/methodology/approach – This study uses three rates of return to represent firm performance: return on assets, return on equity and holding period return. Regression analysis is used to determine the direction of causality between CEO pay and firm performance and the existence of lagged relationship between them. Findings – The findings indicate the existence of synchronous and lagged relationships between CEO pay and firm performance. However, the direction of causality is mainly from pay to performance, and not vice versa. Research limitations/implications – The results presented in this paper are limited by the small sample size of MBNQA winning companies. Although the award began in 1988, only a few companies won the award each year and many of them were not public companies. In addition, five companies won the award twice and one company won the award three times, which further reduces the sample size. Originality/value – This paper finds the existence of synchronous and lagged relationships between CEO pay and firm performance for a group of quality companies

    Bioresorbable Film for the Prevention of Adhesion to the Anterior Spine After Anterolateral Discectomy

    Background context The development of scar tissue and adhesions postoperatively is a natural consequence of healing but can be associated with medical complications and render reoperation difficult. Many biocompatible products have been evaluated as barriers or deterrents to adhesions. Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of a bioresorbable polylactide film as a barrier to adhesion formation after anterolateral discectomy. Study design Experimental study. Methods Seven, skeletally mature female sheep underwent a retroperitoneal approach to the anterolateral lumbar spine. A discectomy was performed at two levels with an intervening unoperated disc site. One site was treated with a polylactide film barrier (Hydrosorb Shield; MacroPore Biosurgery, San Diego, CA) affixed with tacks manufactured from the same material. The second site was left untreated. Treatment and control sites were randomly assigned. Postmortem analysis included scar tenacity scoring on five spines and histological evaluation on two spines. Results The application of the Hydrosorb film barrier allowed a definite dissection plane during scar tenacity scoring and there was a significant difference in the development of adhesions to the disc between the control and treated sites. Histological evaluation revealed evidence of barrier formation to scar tissue and no significant adverse inflammatory reactions. Conclusions Hydrosorb Shield appears to be an effective postoperative barrier to scar tissue adhesion after anterolateral discectomy. The use of polylactide tacks was beneficial to affix the barrier film in place. Safety issues associated with delayed healing or adverse response to the film or tacks were not observed. Hydrosorb film may be useful as an antiadhesion barrier facilitating dissection during surgical revision in anterior approaches to the spine. Further studies are indicated to evaluate the performance of the bioresorbable material as an antiadhesion barrier in techniques of spinal fusion and disc replacement
