    Out of the Box: Roles of Video in Research

    Eleven Purdue University students from the Film and Video Studies program teamed up with authors and professors of six articles from volume 4 of the Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research (JPUR) to produce four-to-seven-minute video abstracts for each piece. The film students worked closely with their real-world clients and learned not only the process of creating short documentaries, but also the professional opportunities available to those with the ability to disseminate research creatively.     Preparation and Characterization of (Hyacinth plant / Chitosan) Composite as a Heavy Metal Removal

              في  هذه الدراسة، تم تحضير ودراسة  خصائص متراكبة  نبات زهرة النيل  / الجايتوسان ، لإزالة المعادن  الثقيلة. تم جمع نبات زهرة النيل من على ضفاف نهر دجلة في بغداد. اجزاء زهرة النيل من جدر وساق تم تنعيمها إلى مسحوق. المواد المتراكبة تحضر بنسب للجزء النباتي من (2.9% الى30.3% بنسب وزنيه) التي تقابل من (30 الى 500 ملي غرام )مع الجيتوسان. النتائج أظهرتأن جميع أجزاء النبات لها امتصاص ممتاز للنحاس الثنائي وصل إلى 100%. حيث أن نسبة ( 2.9 %) تقابل 30ملي غرام من إضافة زهرة النيل للجايتوسان أعطت أعلى إزالة للرصاص الثنائي تصل إلى 82.2% خلال 24 ساعة بينما أن نسبة أن نسبة 20.23% من إضافة  ساق زهرة النيل إلى الجايتوسان  أعطت إزالة 61% من الكادميوم الثنائي خلال 24ساعةومن ناحية أخرى أظهرت صور (SEM)إشكال منتظمة ومسامية عالية للنماذج بينما كانت اطياف(FTIR)اثبت على تكوين المتراكبة .In this study, the preparation and characterization of hyacinth plant /chitosan composite, as a heavy metal removal, were done. Water hyacinth plant (Eichhorniacrasspes) was collected from Tigris river in Baghdad. The root and shoot parts of plant were ground to powder. Composite materials were prepared at different ratios of plant part (from 2.9% to 30.3%, wt /wt) which corresponds to (30-500mg) of hyacinth plant (root and shoot) and chitosan. The results showed that all examined ratios of plant parts have an excellent absorption to copper (Cu (II)). Moreover, it was observed that 2.9% corresponds (30mg) of plant root revealed highest removal (82.7%) of Pb (II), while 20.23% of shoot removed 61% of Cd (II) within 24 hr. On the other hand, SEM images displayed a regular shape and high porosity of prepared samples, while FTIR spectra of composite materials showed the characteristic of raw materials bands, which give strong evidence of composite formation

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan Strategi Pembelajaran Apresiasi Drama Melalui Penerapan Metode Drill. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kepustakaan (library research) dengan telaah kritis berupa gagasan konseptual. Data yang digunakan bersumber dari buku-buku atau naskah kepustakaan serta diperoleh dari pengalaman penulis dan hasil telaah pakar kemudian didukung dari buku-buku kepustakaan yang relevan dengan topik pembahasan. Langkah-langkah dalam pengkajian literatur yakni, mengumpulkan data-data sekunder yang relevan berupa dokumentasi dan mengkaji buku-buku teks yang ditemukan terkait dengan strategi pembelajaran apresiasi drama melalui penerapan metode drill. Hasil yang diperoleh dapat disimpulkan, bahwa seorang guru bahasa Indonesia harus memperoleh pengetahuan sehingga diharapkan, (1) mampu memahami dan menerapkan metode yang bervariatif dan menyenagkan bagi siswa khususnya melalui pendekatan latihan peran, (2) dengan proses latihan terpola guru dapat membawa siswa menuju pentas sehingga siswa mencintai pembelajaran bahasa dan sastra indonesia khususnya apresiasi drama, (3) metode drill memberikan inovasi baru yang menyajikan pembelajaran menyenangkan dan menghindari kebosanan siswa, (4) apresiasi drama dapat meningkatkan fungsi kemampuan membaca, berbicara dan mengasa karakter siswa dalam memahami hidup dan menata kedisiplinan diri.   &nbsp

    The main problem in this study is the low learning outcomes of students of class X IPA SMA Negeri 1 Tinombo Selatan on the material of writing personal letters. There are several things that cause these problems, including: 1) students do not understand the concepts being taught and 2) the methods used by teachers in carrying out learning make students less active, also of course other factors. This research was conducted with the aim of improving the ability of students of class X IPA SMA Negeri 1 Tinombo to write personal letters through the guided practice method. Benefits Improve student learning outcomes, especially learning to write personal letters and hone the ability to work alone through exercises under the guidance of the teacher, and do not feel neglected by the teacher because they are still monitored in carrying out their duties. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The design of this study refers to the Kemmis and Mc Taggart model which consists of four components, namely 1) planning, 2) action implementation, 3) observation and 4) reflection. The data collected in this study is in the form of teacher and student activity data during the learning process obtained by using observation sheets and student learning outcomes data obtained by giving individual tests to students. In the research that has been carried out, it was found that the students of class X IPA SMA Negeri 1 Tinombo Selatan experienced an increase in classical absorption from the pre-action results of 90

    A comparative application of flood routing models on the rivers Wear and Tees with special reference to the state variable model

    An analysis of a number of flood routing methods has been carried out in this study. These methods are namely, the Muskingum-Cunge Method, the Variable Parameter Diffusion Method, the State Variable Kinematic Wave Model, and the state variable modelling of nonlinear Muskingum Model. The Muskingum-Cunge and Variable Parameter Diffusion Methods are recommended for use on British Rivers by the Natural Environment Research Council flood studies report, 1975.In using numerical flood routing model, it is very important to calculate the model parameters. For instance storage routing models require a suitable form of storage-discharge relationship. Past flow records were used for the above calculation. The state Variable Kinematic Wave Model has been applied for routing the flood hydrograph through river reaches. The stage and discharge are computed by a kinematic wave routing technique using the state variable approach in which the one-dimensional differential equations of unsteady flow are solved by state and output equations of the state variable model. The nonlinear Muskingum equation has been solved using the state variable modelling technique. Two parameter estimation techniques namely, Hooke-Jeeves and linear regression, are employed for the calibration of the nonlinear Muskingum model parameters (a, x, and m).The applicability of the flood routing model computer programs to different flood events of different seasons for reaches of both the Rivers Wear and Tees is demonstrated. Discriptions of the geology and hydrological data for reaches of both the Rivers Wear and Tees are given in this study. The computed and observed hydrographs of flood routing models used in this study are compared

    Heavy Metal Contamination of Roadside Topsoil in North East Jordan

    Environmental pollution of heavy metals from automobiles has attained much attention in the recent past, a study of heavy metals in roadside soils is critical in assessing the potential environmental impacts of automobile emission on soil. The present research was conducted to study heavy metals contamination in roadside soils of Mafraq-Zarqa highway in Jordan. The soil samples were collected and analyzed for the levels of Mn, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn using flam atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that all heavy metals except Mn are lower than other studies. Results indicate the decreasing order of the average total metals content for the studied metals: Mn> Zn > Cu > Ni> Pb> Cd, higher levels of heavy metals east of the roadside were due to the westerly prevailing wind at the sampling site. The contamination decreased with distance from off the edge of the roadside and dropped to background level at about 60m west, also the contamination of the top soil was higher than the lower soil, finally the levels of heavy metals increased with increasing traffic densities and furthermore, they reached elevated levels in urban areas.     the winds of change in the world  order started from multiple places, especially with the beginning of the disintegration and collapse of the former Soviet Union, and   the breakup of the socialist bloc .As the researcher believes, this event has had a very serious importance in the emergence of “the new world order”. This latest order swept the world and created new coalitions. It also supported the existing regional organizations, and also resulted in the support of existing regional organizations, such as the European Union, the Asian bloc, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in the Arab world. Many researchers started to talk about the importance of having a strong international and regional multi -polar powers which play political, economic and cultural roles in this new world order.This study aimed at finding out the role played by the newspapers of the GCC countries in this international order. The study also aimed to identify the role played by the Gulf Press, as one of the mainstays in the formation of public opinion, and to create awareness among the Gulf people and the Arabs in general. Another main objective of this study was to identify the extent of the GCC press contribution in providing the GCC citizen with the new information, achievements, dissemination of news and positive images of the GCC countries.The first hypothesis: The Gulf newspapers contribute in the formation of the gulf citizens’ public opinion in terms of published news and information. The second hypothesis: There is no cooperation and agreement among the Gulf newspapers regarding publishing news and information which concerns the Gulf citizen. The third hypothesis: There are professional and political impediments which play a major role in the process of news and information dissemination about the GCC citizen in the Gulf newspapers

    The Impact of Jordan’s Accession to the World Trade Organization on the Jordan Economy

    This study aims to show the impact of Jordan’s accession to WTO on the Jordanian economy. The descriptive analytical approach was used to conduct this study, where, qualitative data was collected from published articles in Scientific Journals in order to identify the WTO in terms of objectives and membership conditions. The analytical side of this study relies on quantitative data related to a number of economic indicators namely; exports volume, foreign investments, foreign trade, inflation rates, and GDP rates, these data were collected from the reports issued by the official agencies such as the Central Bank of Jordan and Ports Corporation. The main findings of the study show that Jordan’s accession to WTO has a positive impact on exports, foreign trade and foreign investments, and no impact on inflation rates. The researcher suggested exploiting the membership in WTO to build other relations with the members, such as, educational, tourist and therapeutic relations
