Open mirror symmetry for Pfaffian Calabi-Yau 3-folds
We investigate the open mirror symmetry of certain non-complete intersection
Calabi- Yau 3-folds, so called pfaffian Calabi-Yau. We perform the prediction
of the number of disk invariants of several examples by using the direct
integration method proposed recently and the open mirror symmetry. We treat
several pfaffian Calabi-Yau 3-folds in and branes with two
discrete vacua. Some models have the two special points in its moduli space,
around both of which we can consider different A-model mirror partners. We
compute disc invariants for both cases. This study is the first application of
the open mirror symmetry to the compact non-complete intersections in toric

Explicit de Sitter Flux Vacua for Global String Models with Chiral Matter
We address the open question of performing an explicit stabilisation of all
closed string moduli (including dilaton, complex structure and Kaehler moduli)
in fluxed type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with chiral matter. Using toric
geometry we construct Calabi-Yau manifolds with del Pezzo singularities.
D-branes located at such singularities can support the Standard Model gauge
group and matter content. In order to control complex structure moduli
stabilisation we consider Calabi-Yau manifolds which exhibit a discrete
symmetry that reduces the effective number of complex structure moduli. We
calculate the corresponding periods in the symplectic basis of invariant
three-cycles and find explicit flux vacua for concrete examples. We compute the
values of the flux superpotential and the string coupling at these vacua.
Starting from these explicit complex structure solutions, we obtain AdS and dS
minima where the Kaehler moduli are stabilised by a mixture of D-terms,
non-perturbative and perturbative alpha'-corrections as in the LARGE Volume
Scenario. In the considered example the visible sector lives at a dP_6
singularity which can be higgsed to the phenomenologically interesting class of

Response to arXiv:0811.3876 "Comment on a recent conjectured solution of the three dimensional Ising model" by Wu et al
This is a Response to a recent Comment [F.Y. Wu et al., Phil. Mag. 88, 3093
(2008), arXiv:0811.3876] on the conjectured solution of the three-dimensional
(3D) Ising model [Z.D. Zhang, Phil. Mag. 87, 5309 (2007), arXiv:0705.1045].
Several points are made: 1) Conjecture 1, regarding the additional rotation, is
understood as performing a transformation for smoothing all the crossings of
the knots; 2) The weight factors in Conjecture 2 are interpreted as a novel
topologic phase; 3) The conjectured solution and its low- and high-temperature
expansions are supported by the mathematical theorems for the analytical
behavior of the Ising model. The physics behind the extra dimension is also

On Flux Quantization in F-Theory
We study the problem of four-form flux quantization in F-theory
compactifications. We prove that for smooth, elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau
fourfolds with a Weierstrass representation, the flux is always integrally
quantized. This implies that any possible half-integral quantization effects
must come from 7-branes, i.e. from singularities of the fourfold. We
subsequently analyze the quantization rule on explicit fourfolds with Sp(N)
singularities, and connect our findings via Sen's limit to IIB string theory.
Via direct computations we find that the four-form is half-integrally quantized
whenever the corresponding 7-brane stacks wrap non-spin complex surfaces, in
accordance with the perturbative Freed-Witten anomaly. Our calculations on the
fourfolds are done via toric techniques, whereas in IIB we rely on Sen's
tachyon condensation picture to treat bound states of branes. Finally, we give
general formulae for the curvature- and flux-induced D3 tadpoles for general
fourfolds with Sp(N) singularities.Comment: 46 page
A qualitative study of the views of patients with long-term conditions on family doctors in Hong Kong
<b>Background</b> Primary care based management of long-term conditions (LTCs) is high on the international healthcare agenda, including the Asia-Pacific region. Hong Kong has a 'mixed economy' healthcare system with both public and private sectors with a range of types of primary care doctors. Recent Hong Kong Government policy aims to enhance the management of LTCs in primary care possibly based on a 'family doctor' model. Patients' views on this are not well documented and the aim of the present study was to explore the views of patients with LTCs on family doctors in Hong Kong.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> The views of patients (with a variety of LTCs) on family doctors in Hong Kong were explored. Two groups of participants were interviewed; a) those who considered themselves as having a family doctor, b) those who considered themselves as not having a family doctor (either with a regular primary care doctor but not a family doctor or with no regular primary care doctor). In-depth individual semi-structured interviews were carried out with 28 participants (10 with a family doctor, 10 with a regular doctor, and 8 with no regular doctor) and analysed using the constant comparative method.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> Participants who did not have a family doctor were familiar with the concept but regarded it as a 'luxury item' for the rich within the private healthcare system. Those with a regular family doctor (all private) regarded having one as important to their and their family's health. Participants in both groups felt that as well as the more usual family medicine specialist or general practitioner, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners also had the potential to be family doctors. However most participants attended the public healthcare system for management of their LTCs whether they had a family doctor or not. Cost, perceived need, quality, trust, and choice were all barriers to the use of family doctors for the management of their LTCs.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b> Important barriers to the adoption of a 'family doctor' model of management of LTCs exist in Hong Kong. Effective policy implementation seems unlikely unless these complex barriers are addressed
Solving the Topological String on K3 Fibrations
We present solutions of the holomorphic anomaly equations for compact
two-parameter Calabi-Yau manifolds which are hypersurfaces in weighted
projective space. In particular we focus on K3-fibrations where due to
heterotic type II duality the topological invariants in the fibre direction are
encoded in certain modular forms. The formalism employed provides holomorphic

Appendix perforation in appendix duplication in a man: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Although appendix duplication is diagnosed as a rare congenital anomaly of the alimentary tract in childhood, a few adult cases have also been reported. Here we report a case of appendix duplication with perforated appendicitis co-existing with acute appendicitis in an adult patient.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 33-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to our Emergency Department with right-sided lower-quadrant pain that we explored for presumed complicated appendicitis. On exploration, a perforated inflamed appendix was found coexisting with a second inflamed appendix which was subserosal and retrocecal. Appendectomies were performed, and the pathological examination confirmed the signs of acute inflammation in both appendixes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Surgeons in emergency services should be aware of anatomical anomalies such as duplication and malposition of the appendix, even in patients with a history of previous appendectomy, because misdiagnosis of appendix duplication may lead to a poor clinical outcome and medicolegal issues.</p
