When to Bring Your Child to the Emergency Room: a pamphlet for parents

    Get PDF
For decades, emergency departments (EDs) have struggled with overuse. Children who receive their primary care at a community health clinic or who are Medicaid-insured are twice as likely as private practice patients to seek care in the ED. Additionally, many New American families do not have a comprehensive understanding of the US healthcare system. A pamphlet was created as a health literacy intervention for parents to better understand when to call 911, visit the ED, or go to a primary care provider. The pamphlet is being translated into 8 languages commonly spoken by New American families in Chittenden County, VT.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1524/thumbnail.jp

Naturally, we will focus a great deal at this gathering on the recently adopted U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Convention), a truly significant accomplishment for the international community and a great source of hope for people everywhere with disabilities. But between adopting the Convention and actually securing the important rights it guarantees lies a long and tortuous path that will test the commitment, tenacity, and political will of the international community—from national leaders to grassroots advocacy organizations to individual citizens bent upon justice for all

The role of the planetarium in students\u27 attitudes, learning, and thinking about astronomical concepts.

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the planetarium on students while learning astronomy. The main goals of this study were to evaluate changes in students’ attitudes towards astronomy, whether students learned and retained more knowledge due to planetarium-enriched instruction, and how the planetarium helped students think about astronomical concepts. The framework that guided this study was the Contextual Model of Learning (CML) (Falk & Dierking, 1992; 2000), which includes three overlapping contexts that contribute to the overall learning experience in informal science venues - the personal, physical, and sociocultural contexts. The planetarium program was successful in reaching students in all three contexts of the CML, which contributed to students’ positive experiences during this study. The results of this study showed that the immersive environment and unique capabilities of a digital planetarium positively influenced students’ attitudes, learning, retention, and thinking. This study has important implications for planetariums, informal science education researchers, and schools

ABSTRACT RESEARCH PROPOSAL: COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND BIRTH EXPERIENCES: DESCRIBING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICIES AND THE BIRTH EXPERIENCES OF GEORGIA MOTHERS By KATHERINE RAECHEL THORNBURGH B.S., KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY December 5, 2020 INTRODUCTION: A pandemic such as COVID-19 increases stress during pregnancy or early development that can have an adverse effect on the health of an individual. Additionally, COVID-19 affects pregnancy and birth experiences by reducing the number of support personnel and the number of in-person appointments, and possibly potentially separating mother and newborn in the case of a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 status. The purpose of this capstone is to present a compelling research proposal titled, “COVID-19 Pandemic and Birth Experiences: Describing the Relationship Between Policies and the Birth Experiences of Georgia Mothers” with the following aims: Specific Aim 1: Describe mothers’ perspectives of COVID-19 policies on their birth experiences and birth plans. To meet this aim, a semi-structured interview will be conducted that inquires on the changes made to mothers’ intended birth plan and how COVID-19 policies affected mothers’ birth experiences—both negatively and positively. Specific Aim 2: Describe mothers’ perceptions of fair and equitable treatment during pregnancy. To meet this aim, a semi-structured interview will be given to respondents that inquires on personal perceptions of fair and equitable treatment. To meet this aim, respondents will be asked if they felt that all of their questions regarding their pregnancy were being answered, if they felt adequately prepared for labor and post-partum care, and whether they felt their birth experiences met their expectations. This qualitative data will describe general themes in perception of quality of care and equitable care for various racial, socioeconomic, and insurance coverage status groups. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study will be conducted in Georgia, statewide, to describe mothers’ perspectives of COVID-19 policies on their birth experiences, birth plans, and their perceptions of fair and equitable treatment during pregnancy, labor and delivery and post-partum. The study sample will be acquired via an adapted State Electronic Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (SENDSS) case investigation form. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted

Imperfection and Thickness Measurement of Panels Using a Coordinate Measurement Machine

    Get PDF
This paper summarizes the methodology used to measure imperfection and thickness variation for flat and curved panels using a Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) and the software program MeasPanel. The objective is to provide a reference document so that someone with a basic understanding of CMM operation can measure a panel with minimal training. Detailed information about both the measurement system setup and computer software is provided. Information is also provided about the format of the raw data, as well as how it is post-processed for use in finite-element analysis
