    Gender differences in health care use among the elderly population in areas of Norway and Finland. A cross-sectional analysis based on the HUNT study and the FINRISK Senior Survey

    BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to examine gender differences in the self-reported use of health care services by the elderly in rural and metropolitan areas of two Nordic countries with slightly different health care systems: Finland and Norway. METHODS: Population based, cross-sectional surveys conducted in Nord-Tröndelag Norway (1995–97) and in rural and metropolitan areas of Finland (1997) were employed. In the Norwegian data, a total of 7,919 individuals, aged 65–74 years old were included, and the Finnish data included 1,500 individuals. The outcome variables comprised whether participants had visited a general practitioner or a specialist, or had received hospital care or physiotherapy during the past 12 months. Gender differences in the use of health care services were analysed by multiple logistic regression, controlling for health status and socio-demographic characteristics. RESULTS: In Norway, elderly women visited a specialist or were hospitalised less often than men. In Finland, elderly women used all health care services except hospital care more often than men. In Norway, less frequent use of specialist care by women was not associated with self-reported health or chronic diseases. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed differences in self-reported use of secondary care among different genders in areas of Norway and Finland

    To transduce a zebra finch: interrogating behavioral mechanisms in a model system for speech

    The ability to alter neuronal gene expression, either to affect levels of endogenous molecules or to express exogenous ones, is a powerful tool for linking brain and behavior. Scientists continue to finesse genetic manipulation in mice. Yet mice do not exhibit every behavior of interest. For example, Mus musculus do not readily imitate sounds, a trait known as vocal learning and a feature of speech. In contrast, thousands of bird species exhibit this ability. The circuits and underlying molecular mechanisms appear similar between disparate avian orders and are shared with humans. An advantage of studying vocal learning birds is that the neurons dedicated to this trait are nested within the surrounding brain regions, providing anatomical targets for relating brain and behavior. In songbirds, these nuclei are known as the song control system. Molecular function can be interrogated in non-traditional model organisms by exploiting the ability of viruses to insert genetic material into neurons to drive expression of experimenter-defined genes. To date, the use of viruses in the song control system is limited. Here, we review prior successes and test additional viruses for their capacity to transduce basal ganglia song control neurons. These findings provide a roadmap for troubleshooting the use of viruses in animal champions of fascinating behaviors-nowhere better featured than at the 12th International Congress

    Liberalization of capital controls and interest rates restrictions in the EU-15: did it affect economic growth?

    This article studies the effect that the process of capital controls lifting and interest rate deregulation have brought about on growth in the EU-15 over the period 1960-2001. The evidence supports the existence of a positive growth impact from the liberalization of both capital controls and interest rate restrictions. These financial liberalization measures affect growth even after controlling for other growth policies and they are robust to business cycle effects that could spuriously drive the relation. Some tentative evidence indicates that the liberalization of capital controls and the deregulation of interest rates have effected growth through the increase in the efficiency of financial intermediation.

    [Meso-1,2-bis(2,6-dihalo-3/4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylenediamine]platinum(II) complexes (meso-1-PtLL': 2,6-F(2),3-OH; meso-2-PtLL': 2,6-F(2),4-OH; meso-3-PtLL': 2,6-Cl(2),3-OH; meso-4-PtLL': 2,6-Cl(2),4-OH; L = OH(2), L' = OSO(3) or L,L' = Cl(2)) were designed with the aim to get drugs comprising both cytotoxic and testosterone level lowering potencies. It is assumed that such compounds are more efficient than the established endocrine therapeutic measures and can affect the development of hormone refractory prostate cancer (PC). With exception of meso-3-PtLL' all Pt-complexes and the comparison compound cisplatin significantly reduced the testosterone level in experiments on male rats. However, in the test on the Dunning R3327 PC of the rat only cisplatin and meso-4-PtLL' showed a significant anti-tumor activity at well-tolerated dose ranges. Meso-4-PtLL' also significantly extended the time to disease progression in comparison with orchiectomy in this tumor model. Interestingly, the relapsed tumor, too, responded to meso-4-PtLL' as demonstrated in a long-term study on orchiectomized rats bearing Dunning R3327 PC grafts. This effect cannot be ascribed to cytotoxic effects of meso-4-PtLL' because of its inactivity on the human LNCaP/FGC PC cell line. Therefore, the contribution of an additional mechanism to the anti-prostate cancer activity of meso-4-PtLL', presumably owing to its estrogenic potency, must be considered. This assumption was supported by test results with diethylstilbestrol (DES) (non-steroidal estrogen) on the Dunning R3327 PC of the rat relapsed after orchiectomy. This tumor model was strongly inhibited by DES. The possible mode of action of meso-4-PtLL' is thoroughly discussed
