    La pêche réunionnaise est, depuis les cinq dernières années, placée à contre temps complet de l'immense majorité des autres pêcheries communautaires (Union européenne), dans une situation de développement rapide de l'ensemble de ses segments (pêche artisanale, grande pêche hauturière antarctique, pêche palangrière). Le plus rapide de ces développements est certainement celui du segment palangrier qui, né il y a 5 ans, va cette année 1996 égaliser, voire dépasser la pêche artisanale, soit près de 1 500 t/an. Cette pêcherie est composée par 9 armements alignant 28 navirees de 12 à 33 m dont 20 sont opérationnels en 1996. Sa production est constituée pour les espèces majeures, de 2/3 d'espadons et de 1/3 de thonidés. La zone de pêche exploitée est très vaste, depuis l'équateur jusqu'au 35°Sud. Les rendements, après avoir présenté une augmentation très significative de 1992 à 1994, présentent un tassement certain de 1994 à 1996 pour tous les navires de la flotte. Ce développement se poursuit aujourd'hui au niveau de la région COI par un développement des flottilles palangrières régionales, amorcé aux Seychelles et bientôt à Maurice. Un équilibre d'exploitation pérenne doit impérativement s'appuyer sur les recherches halieutiques et socio-économiques d'accompagnement de cette pêcherie. (Résumé d'auteur

    The translational regulator dFMRP interacts with epidermal growth factor receptor to regulate apoptosis in Drosophila

    poster abstractPosttranscriptional gene regulation is required for all aspects of cellular and tissue development and is a major mechanism underlying many diseases ranging from neurological disorders to cancer. The translational repressor fragile x mental retardation protein (FMRP) is ubiquitously expressed throughout development but is silenced in Fragile X Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. Interestingly, high levels of FMRP have recently been identified in human metastatic breast cancer. FMRP overexpression in these patients is directly correlated with increased lung metastasis suggesting a direct role for translational regulation both in cell proliferation and in invasive cell migration. Interestingly, however, FMRP can promote both proliferation and apoptosis. To dissect FMRP’s role in cancer development and progression, we are exploiting the powerful genetic system of Drosophila. Drosophila is an excellent model organism for human diseases associated with FMRP due to the strong evolutionary conservation of the fragile x mental retardation gene 1 which encodes this protein. dFMRP was overexpressed in the Drosophila imaginal wing disc, an epithelial tissue model. Contrary to a role in proliferation, overexpression of dFMRP leads to obvious cell loss in the adult wing and an increase in apoptotic markers. Using a combinatorial genetic screen, we have identified genes which are able to suppress this apoptotic phenotype and thus may be important for FMRP-­‐dependent tumorigenesis. Our focus is now on the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway since blocking this mechanism is able to completely rescue the dFMRP-­‐overexpression wing defects. Clonal analysis reveals that dFMRP overexpressing cells survive their dFMRP-­induced apoptotic programming when co-­‐expressing a dominant negative form of EGFR. Additional clonal analyses are being used to explore the potential significance of this survival on tumor formation and metastasis

    Optimal classical-communication-assisted local model of n-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger correlations

    We present a model, motivated by the criterion of reality put forward by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen and supplemented by classical communication, which correctly reproduces the quantum-mechanical predictions for measurements of all products of Pauli operators on an n-qubit GHZ state (or ``cat state''). The n-2 bits employed by our model are shown to be optimal for the allowed set of measurements, demonstrating that the required communication overhead scales linearly with n. We formulate a connection between the generation of the local values utilized by our model and the stabilizer formalism, which leads us to conjecture that a generalization of this method will shed light on the content of the Gottesman-Knill theorem.Comment: New version - expanded and revised to address referee comment

    The quadrupole resonator: Construction, RF System Field Calculations and First Applications

    The quadrupole resonator allows measurement of the RF properties of superconducting (sc) films deposited on disk-shaped metallic substrates. We describe the construction of the apparatus, the brazing and electron-beam welding procedures, the arrangements for compensating mechanical tolerances of samples and for assuring reproducible sample illumination. We explain the special features of the RF sy stem and give the results of field calculations with a 3D cavity code. Finally we present first measurements of Nb on Cu film samples and compare them with calibrations done with a bulk Nb sample

    Nonlinear Volatility of River Flux Fluctuations

    We study the spectral properties of the magnitudes of river flux increments, the volatility. The volatility series exhibits (i) strong seasonal periodicity and (ii) strongly power-law correlations for time scales less than one year. We test the nonlinear properties of the river flux increment series by randomizing its Fourier phases and find that the surrogate volatility series (i) has almost no seasonal periodicity and (ii) is weakly correlated for time scales less than one year. We quantify the degree of nonlinearity by measuring (i) the amplitude of the power spectrum at the seasonal peak and (ii) the correlation power-law exponent of the volatility series.Comment: 5 revtex pages, 6 page

    Entanglement of Dirac fields in non-inertial frames

    We analyze the entanglement between two modes of a free Dirac field as seen by two relatively accelerated parties. The entanglement is degraded by the Unruh effect and asymptotically reaches a non-vanishing minimum value in the infinite acceleration limit. This means that the state always remains entangled to a degree and can be used in quantum information tasks, such as teleportation, between parties in relative uniform acceleration. We analyze our results from the point of view afforded by the phenomenon of entanglement sharing and in terms of recent results in the area of multi-qubit complementarity.Comment: 15 pages, with 8 figures (Mar 2006); accepted to Physical Review A, July 2006 - slightly revise

    The Surgical Infection Society revised guidelines on the management of intra-abdominal infection

    Background: Previous evidence-based guidelines on the management of intra-abdominal infection (IAI) were published by the Surgical Infection Society (SIS) in 1992, 2002, and 2010. At the time the most recent guideline was released, the plan was to update the guideline every five years to ensure the timeliness and appropriateness of the recommendations. Methods: Based on the previous guidelines, the task force outlined a number of topics related to the treatment of patients with IAI and then developed key questions on these various topics. All questions were approached using general and specific literature searches, focusing on articles and other information published since 2008. These publications and additional materials published before 2008 were reviewed by the task force as a whole or by individual subgroups as to relevance to individual questions. Recommendations were developed by a process of iterative consensus, with all task force members voting to accept or reject each recommendation. Grading was based on the GRADE (Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) system; the quality of the evidence was graded as high, moderate, or weak, and the strength of the recommendation was graded as strong or weak. Review of the document was performed by members of the SIS who were not on the task force. After responses were made to all critiques, the document was approved as an official guideline of the SIS by the Executive Council. Results: This guideline summarizes the current recommendations developed by the task force on the treatment of patients who have IAI. Evidence-based recommendations have been made regarding risk assessment in individual patients; source control; the timing, selection, and duration of antimicrobial therapy; and suggested approaches to patients who fail initial therapy. Additional recommendations related to the treatment of pediatric patients with IAI have been included. Summary: The current recommendations of the SIS regarding the treatment of patients with IAI are provided in this guideline

    Theory and simulation of short-range models of globular protein solutions

    We report theoretical and simulation studies of phase coexistence in model globular protein solutions, based on short-range, central, pair potential representations of the interaction among macro-particles. After reviewing our previous investigations of hard-core Yukawa and generalised Lennard-Jones potentials, we report more recent results obtained within a DLVO-like description of lysozyme solutions in water and added salt. We show that a one-parameter fit of this model based on Static Light Scattering and Self-Interaction Chromatography data in the dilute protein regime, yields demixing and crystallization curves in good agreement with experimental protein-rich/protein-poor and solubility envelopes. The dependence of cloud and solubility points temperature of the model on the ionic strength is also investigated. Our findings highlight the minimal assumptions on the properties of the microscopic interaction sufficient for a satisfactory reproduction of the phase diagram topology of globular protein solutions.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, Proc. of Conference "Structural Arrest Transitions in Colloidal Systems with Short-Range Attractions", Messina (ITALY) 17-20 December 200

    Feasibility study of a 2 GeV superconducting HH^{-} linac as injector for the CERN PS

    This preliminary feasibility study is based on the availability of the CERN LEP2 superconducting RF system after LEP de-commissioning. The option that is explored is to use this system as part of a high energy H- linac injecting at 2 GeV into the CERN PS, with the aim of reliably providing at its output twice the presently foreseen transverse beam brightness at the ultimate intensity envisaged for LHC. This requires the linac to be pulsed at the PS repetition rate of 0.8 Hz with a mean beam current of 10 mA which is sufficient for filling the PS in 240 ms (i.e. about 100 turns) with the ultimate intensity foreseen for injection for the LHC. The linac is composed of two RFQs with a chopping section, a room temperature DTL, a superconducting section with reduced beta cavities up to 1 GeV, and a section of LEP2 cavities up to 2 GeV. This study deals, in particular, with the problems inherent in H- acceleration up to high energy and in the pulsed operation of SC cavities. Means for compensating microphonic vibrations in the SC cavities are considered, with the aim of reducing the final overall energy spread to the tight requirements for injection into a synchrotron. Other possible applications of such a machine are also briefly reviewed, that make use of its potential for working at a higher duty cycle than required for LHC alone
