Spectrum of malignancies among the population of adults living with HIV infection in China: A nationwide follow-up study, 2008-2011.
BackgroundAlthough increasingly studied in high-income countries, there is a paucity of data from the Chinese population on the patterns of cancer among people living with HIV (PLHIV).MethodsWe conducted a nationwide follow-up study using routinely collected data for adult PLHIV diagnosed on or before 31 December 2011 and alive and in care as of 1 January 2008. Participants were observed from 1 January 2008 (study start) to 30 June 2012 (study end). Main outcome measures were gender-stratified age-standardized incidence rates for China (ASIRC) and standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for all malignancy types/sites observed.ResultsAmong 399,451 subjects, a majority was aged 30-44 years (49.3%), male (69.8%), and Han Chinese (67.9%). A total of 3,819 reports of cancer were identified. Overall, ASIRC was 776.4 per 100,000 for males and 486.5 per 100,000 for females. Malignancy sites/types with highest ASIRC among males were lung (226.0 per 100,000), liver (145.7 per 100,000), and lymphoma (63.1 per 100,000), and among females were lung (66.8 per 100,000), lymphoma (48.0 per 100,000), stomach (47.8 per 100,000), and cervix (47.6 per 100,000). Overall SIR for males was 3.4 and for females was 2.6. Highest SIR was observed for Kaposi sarcoma (2,639.8 for males, 1,593.5 for females) and lymphoma (13.9 for males, 16.0 for females).ConclusionsThese results provide evidence of substantial AIDS-defining and non-AIDS-defining cancer burden among adult Chinese PLHIV between 2008 and 2011. Although further study is warranted, China should take action to improve cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment for this vulnerable population
The Study of Noncollectivity by the Forward-Backward Multiplicity Correlation Function
We propose a forward-backward multiplicity correlation function ,
which is experimentally accessible, to measure the noncollectivity
contribution. We find that is sensitive to the jet contribution for
the particle-rich case. Surprisingly, it will automatically decrease for the
particle-rare case. Our study indicates that similar decreasing trend observed
previously is mainly driven by particle scarcity instead of jets. The function
is studied in Au+Au collision at GeV with a multiphase
transport model (AMPT). We find that the jet fraction is about 10% at
transverse momentum () around 2.5 GeV/ and reaches up to 30% at 3.5
GeV/. The implication of this study in the investigation of the
noncollectivity contribution in elliptic anisotropy parameter is also
discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
DiaquaÂbisÂ[5-(pyrazin-2-yl-κN 1)-3-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ido-κN 1]cobalt(II) methanol disolvate
The CoII ion in the title mononuclear compound, [Co(C11H7N6)2(H2O)2]·2CH3OH, is located on an inversion center and is six-coordinated in a distorted octaÂhedral geometry defined by four N atoms from two deprotonated 5-(pyrazin-2-yl-κN)-3-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ide (ppt) ligands and two water molÂecules. In the crystal, the complex molÂecules and lattice methanol molÂecules are linked via O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating a two-dimensional supraÂmolecular network parallel to (001). π–π interÂactions between the triazole and pyrazine rings and between the pyridine rings are present [centroid–centroid distances = 3.686 (3) and 3.929 (4) Å, respectively]
Therapeutic effects of Jiaotai pill on rat insomnia via regulation of GABA signal pathway
Purpose: To investigate the therapeutic effects of Jiaotai pill (JTP) on rats with insomnia induced by pchlorophenylalanine (PCPA).Methods: Rats with PCPA-induced insomnia were divided into 5 groups (n = 10), made up of control group, positive treatment group (estazolam 0.1 mg/kg), and 3 JTP treatment groups (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 g/kg). Another group of 10 rats were treated as normal group. Rats in normal and control groups were treated with normal saline (10 mL/kg). After 14 days of drug treatment, the rats were injected intraperitoneally with sodium pentobarbital (45 mg/kg) and thereafter, latent period and sleeping time were recorded, while contents of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamic acid (Glu) in hypothalamus were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Furthermore, the expressions of glutamate decarboxylase 65 (GAD-65), glutamate decarboxylase 67 (GAD-67), GABAaminotransferase (GABA)-T, anti-GABA transporter 1 (GAT)-1, anti-GABA transporter (GAT)-3, and GABA receptors (GABA-A and GABA-B) in the hypothalamus were analyzed by western blotting assay. Results: The results showed that JTP (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 g/kg) significantly shortened latent period and prolonged sleeping time (p < 0.01). JTP also increased GABA level (p < 0.01), but decreased Glu contents of the rat hypothalamus (p < 0.01). Western blotting data indicate that JTP significantly upregulated the levels of GAD-65 (p < 0.01), GAD-67 (p < 0.05), GAT-1 (p < 0.01), GAT-3 (p < 0.01), GABA-A (p < 0.01) and GABA-B (p < 0.01), while the level of GABA-T was down-regulated.Conclusion: The results demonstrate that JTP possesses significant sedative effects on insomnia in rats, most probably through a mechanism involving GABA signal pathway. Keywords: Jiaotai pill, Insomnia, GABA, Glutamate, Estazolam, GABA signal pathwa
Maize microrna166 inactivation confers plant development and abiotic stress resistance
MicroRNAs are important regulators in plant developmental processes and stress responses. In this study, we generated a series of maize STTM166 transgenic plants. Knock-down of miR166 resulted in various morphological changes, including rolled leaves, enhanced abiotic stress resistance, inferior yield-related traits, vascular pattern and epidermis structures, tassel architecture, as well as abscisic acid (ABA) level elevation and indole acetic acid (IAA) level reduction in maize. To profile miR166 regulated genes, we performed RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analysis. A total of 178 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 118 up-regulated and 60 down-regulated genes. These DEGs were strongly enriched in cell and intercellular components, cell membrane system components, oxidoreductase activity, single organism metabolic process, carbohydrate metabolic process, and oxidation reduction process. These results indicated that miR166 plays important roles in auxin and ABA interaction in monocots, yet the specific mechanism may differ from dicots. The enhanced abiotic stress resistance is partly caused via rolling leaves, high ABA content, modulated vascular structure, and the potential changes of cell membrane structure. The inferior yield-related traits and late flowering are partly controlled by the decreased IAA content, the interplay of miR166 with other miRNAs and AGOs. Taken together, the present study uncovered novel functions of miR166 in maize, and provide insights on applying short tandem target mimics (STTM) technology in plant breeding
Correlated states in twisted double bilayer graphene
Electron-electron interactions play an important role in graphene and related
systems and can induce exotic quantum states, especially in a stacked bilayer
with a small twist angle. For bilayer graphene where the two layers are twisted
by a "magic angle", flat band and strong many-body effects lead to correlated
insulating states and superconductivity. In contrast to monolayer graphene, the
band structure of untwisted bilayer graphene can be further tuned by a
displacement field, providing an extra degree of freedom to control the flat
band that should appear when two bilayers are stacked on top of each other.
Here, we report the discovery and characterization of such displacement-field
tunable electronic phases in twisted double bilayer graphene. We observe
insulating states at a half-filled conduction band in an intermediate range of
displacement fields. Furthermore, the resistance gap in the correlated
insulator increases with respect to the in-plane magnetic fields and we find
that the g factor according to spin Zeeman effect is ~2, indicating spin
polarization at half filling. These results establish the twisted double
bilayer graphene as an easily tunable platform for exploring quantum many-body
states
