Pattern formation in a ring cavity with temporally incoherent feedback

    Get PDF
We present a theoretical and experimental study of modulation instability and pattern formation in a passive nonlinear optical cavity that is longer than the coherence length of the light circulating in it. Pattern formation in this cavity exhibits various features of a second-order phase transition, closely resembling laser action

This report catalogues and contextualizes the coin finds from the 2019 and 2020 excavation seasons of the German-Israeli archaeological project on Tell Iẓṭabba (Beth Shean). The majority of the coins are Hellenistic and relate to the Seleucid settlement at the site. Although the sample size is small, it contributes to our understanding of the overall and turbulent settlement history

Solitons in Nonlinear Media with an Infinite Range of Nonlocality: First Observation of Coherent Elliptic Solitons and of Vortex-Ring Solitons

We present an experimental study on wave propagation in highly nonlocal optically nonlinear media, for which far-away boundary conditions significantly affect the evolution of localized beams. As an example, we set the boundary conditions to be anisotropic and demonstrate the first experimental observation of coherent elliptic solitons. Furthermore, exploiting the natural ability of such nonlinearities to eliminate azimuthal instabilities, we perform the first observation of stable vortex-ring solitons. These features of highly nonlocal nonlinearities affected by far-away boundary conditions open new directions in nonlinear science by facilitating remote control over soliton propagation

An Oct-1 binding site mediates activation of the gata2 promoter by BMP signaling

The gata2 gene encodes a transcription factor implicated in regulating early patterning of ectoderm and mesoderm, and later in numerous cell-specific gene expression programs. Activation of the gata2 gene during embryogenesis is dependent on the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway, but the mechanism for how signaling controls gene activity has not been defined. We developed an assay in Xenopus embryos to analyze regulatory sequences of the zebrafish gata2 promoter that are necessary to mediate the response to BMP signaling during embryogenesis. We show that activation is Smad dependent, since it is blocked by expression of the inhibitory Smad6. Deletion analysis identified an octamer binding site that is necessary for BMP-mediated induction, and that interacts with the POU homeodomain protein Oct-1. However, this element is not sufficient to transfer a BMP response to a heterologous promoter, requiring an additional more proximal cooperating element. Based on recent studies with other BMP-dependent promoters (Drosophila vestigial and Xenopus Xvent-2), our studies of the gata2 gene suggest that POU-domain proteins comprise a common component of the BMP signaling pathway, cooperating with Smad proteins and other transcriptional activators

Homogenized estimates for soft fiber-composites and tissues with two families of fibers

The macroscopic response of hyperelastic fiber composites is characterized in terms of the behaviors of their constituting phases. To this end, we make use of a unique representation of the deformation gradient in terms of a set of transversely isotropic invariants. Respectively, these invariants correspond to extension along the fibers, transverse dilatation, out-of-plane shear along the fibers, in-plane shear in the transverse plane, and the coupling between the shear modes. With the aid of this representation, it is demonstrated that under a combination of out-of-plane shear and extension along the fibers there is a class of nonlinear materials for which the exact expression for the macroscopic behavior of a composite cylinder assemblage can be determined. The macroscopic response of the composite to shear in the transverse plane is approximated with the aid of an exact result for sequentially laminated composites. Assuming no coupling between the shear modes, these results allow to construct a closed-form homogenized model for the macroscopic response of a fiber composite with neo-Hookean phases. A new variational estimate allows to extend these results to more general classes of materials. The resulting explicit estimates for the macroscopic stresses developing in composites and connective tissues with one and two families of fibers are compared with corresponding finite element simulations of periodic composites and with experimental results. Estimates for the critical stretch ratios at which the composites loose stability at the macroscopic level are compared with the corresponding numerical results too. It is demonstrated that both the primary stress–strain curves and the critical stretch ratios are in fine agreement with the corresponding numerical results

Finite element simulation of a perturbed axial-symmetric whispering-gallery mode and its use for intensity enhancement with a nanoparticle coupled to a microtoroid

We present an optical mode solver for a whispering gallery resonator coupled to an adjacent arbitrary shaped nano-particle that breaks the axial symmetry of the resonator. Such a hybrid resonator-nanoparticle is similar to what was recently used for bio-detection and for field enhancement. We demonstrate our solver by parametrically studying a toroid-nanoplasmonic device and get the optimal nano-plasmonic size for maximal enhancement. We investigate cases near a plasmonic resonance as well as far from a plasmonic resonance. Unlike common plasmons that typically benefit from working near their resonance, here working far from plasmonic resonance provides comparable performance. This is because the plasmonic resonance enhancement is accompanied by cavity quality degradation through plasmonic absorption.Comment: Supplementary COMSOL script, see http://www.quantumchaos.de/Media/comsol2013/Supplement_Script_for_Fig.3_Comsol_4.3a.mp
