Timing of Convertible Debt Financing and Investment

    Get PDF
In this paper, we examine the optimal investment policy of the firm which is financed by issuing equity, straight debt and convertible debt. We extend the model in Mauer and Sarkar (2005) over financing with convertible debt. We examine two different investment policies that maximize the equity value and the firm value and show the agency cost as the difference between each policy value. Furthermore, we investigate how the issuance of convertible debt affects investment.

Optimization Design Suite for Expandable Micro-Grid Clusters

In this study, we introduce an optimization design suite, referred to as the “grid of grids optimal designer” (GGOD), as an addition to the expandable micro-grid clusters (EMGCs) for the evolving electricity generation and infrastructure sectors. EMGCs are an autonomous group of micro-grids in which clusters can generate and consume power. The GGOD is a type of simulation software suitable for longterm use at an electrical facility, where operation planners can plan the expansion, construction, and EMGC operation functions. One of the primary uses of the GGOD is for geospatial data, which require the execution of real world optimization planning. Here, we describe two key applications of the GGOD, including geospatial integrated resource planning for wind farm allocation and transmission configurations, as well as congestion–mitigation planning based on the nodal price approach. Moreover, a concept for the interactive use of optimization functions is also explained

The usefulness of re-attachability of anti-adhesive cross-linked gelatin film and the required physical and biological properties.

Background:To overcome the unfavorable issues associated with conventional anti-adhesive HA/CMC film, we developed an anti-adhesive thermally cross-linked gelatin film. Objective:We tried to clarify the re-attachability of the film and the required properties concerning the film thickness, stiffness and anti-adhesion effect. Methods:To determine the optimal thickness, 5 kinds of the thickness of gelatin film and the conventional film were analyzed by the tensile test, shearing test, buckling test and tissue injury test. Finally, using the optimal film thickness, we tried to clarify the anti-adhesion effect of the reattached film. Results:The tensile and shearing test showed gelatin films ≥30 μm thick had greater tensile strength and a smaller number of film fractures, than the conventional film. The buckling and tissue injury test showed gelatin films ≥60 μm thick had higher buckling strength and worse injury scores than the conventional film. The anti-adhesive effect of re-attached gelatin film using optimal thickness (30-40 μm) found the anti-adhesion score was significantly better than that of the control. Conclusions:Provided it has an optimal thickness, gelatin film can be reattached with enough physical strength not to tear, safety stiffness not to induce tissue injury, and a sufficient anti-adhesion effect

Synchronous malignant B-cell lymphoma and gastric tubular adenocarcinoma associated with paraneoplastic cutaneous vasculitis: hypereosinophilic syndrome with mixed cryoglobulinemia is an important sign of paraneoplastic syndrome

Gastric adenocarcinoma developing concomitantly with a lymphoma is rare. Furthermore, B-cell lymphoma, originating from lymph nodes, with eosinophilia is extremely rare. We report here a case with a synchronous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and an early adenocarcinoma of the stomach. In addition, this case seemed to be associated with paraneoplastic cutaneous vasculitis caused by hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) with mixed cryoglobulinemia (MC). Many neoplastic diseases that affect internal organs display cutaneous manifestations, which may be the presenting signs and symptoms of the underlying malignancy. In particular, the association between cutaneous vasculitis and malignancy has been widely reviewed, and recently neoplasms have been suggested to produce antigens and the resultant immune complex formations, activating the serum complement, thus cause paraneoplastic vasculitis. In this case, severe eosinophilia and cryoglobulinemia with low complements were observed in a laboratory test. A biopsy specimen from a skin lesion revealed leukocytoclastic vasculitis with severe perivascular infiltration of eosinophils. The cutaneous vasuculitis was considered to be a manifestation of HES with MC, although there were no etiological factors of HES and MC. Therefore, the vasculitis seems to be a symptom of paraneoplastic syndrome in this case. Our finding suggests that the potential presence of malignancies should be kept in mind as a possible underlying disorder especially in the presence of HES with MC; this possibility is interesting also as regards at least part of the pathogenesis for paraneplastic syndrome

The Japanese space gravitational wave antenna; DECIGO

    Get PDF
DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the future Japanese space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to open a new window of observation for gravitational wave astronomy especially between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz, revealing various mysteries of the universe such as dark energy, formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and inflation of the universe. The pre-conceptual design of DECIGO consists of three drag-free spacecraft, whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry– Perot Michelson interferometer. We plan to launch two missions, DECIGO pathfinder and pre- DECIGO first and finally DECIGO in 2024

    DECIGO pathfinder

DECIGO pathfinder (DPF) is a milestone satellite mission for DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) which is a future space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to provide us fruitful insights into the universe, in particular about dark energy, a formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and the inflation of the universe. Since DECIGO will be an extremely large mission which will formed by three drag-free spacecraft with 1000m separation, it is significant to gain the technical feasibility of DECIGO before its planned launch in 2024. Thus, we are planning to launch two milestone missions: DPF and pre-DECIGO. The conceptual design and current status of the first milestone mission, DPF, are reviewed in this article
