Improving warehouse responsiveness by job priority management
Warehouses employ order cut-off times to ensure sufficient time for fulfilment. To satisfy
higher consumer expectations, these cut-off times are gradually postponed to improve order
responsiveness. Warehouses therefore have to allocate jobs more efficiently to meet
compressed response times. Priority job management by means of flow-shop models has
been used mainly for manufacturing systems but can also be applied for warehouse job
scheduling to accommodate tighter cut-off times. This study investigates which priority rule
performs best under which circumstances. The performance of each rule is evaluated in terms
of a common cost criterion that integrates the objectives of low earliness, low tardiness, low
labour idleness, and low work-in-process stocks. A real-world case study for a warehouse
distribution centre of an original equipment manufacturer in consumer electronics provides
the input parameters for a simulation study. The simulation outcomes validate several
strategies for improved responsiveness. In particular, the critical ratio rule has the fastest
flow-time and performs best for warehouse scenarios with expensive products and high
labour costs
Data-driven Warehouse Management in Global Supply Chains
Warehouse management has emerged as a determinant for success of global supply chain management. This thesis focuses on how to solve warehouse challenges in global supply chain management (SCM) that is characterized by large volume uncertainty, great responsiveness needs and complex order-fulfilment collaboration with other functionalities. We employ data analytic methods to exploit the rich data information obtained from detailed registration of daily warehouse operations to address these challenges. By providing actual application examples in real-world situations we showcase the potency of such data-driven warehouse management.
In this dissertation, data-driven warehouse management is presented by four-steps in the time horizon of warehouse operations: Long-term opportunities (for the coming years) are examined by predictive analytics for expanding cross-border e-commerce in the European Union. Mid-term demand for spare parts during the end-of-life phase (of several months) are forecasted by means of data-driven modelling for installed base. Short-term operational opportunity (weekly or daily) are presented by employing detailed productivity data to sustain effective operation of variable warehouse resources. Real-time (hourly or shorter) data applications are introduced for job priority allocation to improve daily responsiveness in warehouse order fulfilment.
All these data analytic methods can be incorporated in warehouse management systems where practitioners can tune the specific strategies according to their warehouse constraints, including location cost, labour cost, time criticality, and freight company flexibility. In this way, data analytics at the warehouse level offers great opportunities for managing increasing uncertainties and performance requirements in global SCM
The value of express delivery services for cross-border e-commerce in European Union markets
Further growth of cross-border e-commerce in the European Union markets requires improved express delivery services. The framework presented in this paper identifies relevant contextual factors that affect express delivery adoption rates in European cross-border e-commerce. This framework leads to a set of hypotheses, both on the effects of express deliveries on financial performance indicators (order incidence, order size, and repurchase rate) and on the factors that drive demand for express deliveries (consumer income, logistic costs, and lead-time benefits). A case study provides empirical tests of the hypotheses, using data on about forty thousand sales transactions from a consumer electronics manufacturer’s cross-border online shop. The findings are that express delivery has positive effects on financial performance, as it leads to higher order incidence, larger order size, and higher repurchase rates in cross-border transactions. Demand for express delivery services increases with higher income, larger lead-time benefits, and lower logistic costs. Managers can employ the presented framework to formulate and analyse their own targets for performance and express delivery services
On the susceptibility function of piecewise expanding interval maps
We study the susceptibility function Psi(z) associated to the perturbation
f_t=f+tX of a piecewise expanding interval map f. The analysis is based on a
spectral description of transfer operators. It gives in particular sufficient
conditions which guarantee that Psi(z) is holomorphic in a disc of larger than
one. Although Psi(1) is the formal derivative of the SRB measure of f_t with
respect to t, we present examples satisfying our conditions so that the SRB
measure is not Lipschitz.*We propose a new version of Ruelle's conjectures.* In
v2, we corrected a few minor mistakes and added Conjectures A-B and Remark 4.5.
In v3, we corrected the perturbation (X(f(x)) instead of X(x)), in particular
in the examples from Section 6. As a consequence, Psi(z) has a pole at z=1 for

Projective dynamics and first integrals
We present the theory of tensors with Young tableau symmetry as an efficient
computational tool in dealing with the polynomial first integrals of a natural
system in classical mechanics. We relate a special kind of such first
integrals, already studied by Lundmark, to Beltrami's theorem about
projectively flat Riemannian manifolds. We set the ground for a new and simple
theory of the integrable systems having only quadratic first integrals. This
theory begins with two centered quadrics related by central projection, each
quadric being a model of a space of constant curvature. Finally, we present an
extension of these models to the case of degenerate quadratic forms.Comment: 39 pages, 2 figure
Upregulation of Haploinsufficient Gene Expression in the Brain by Targeting a Long Non-coding RNA Improves Seizure Phenotype in a Model of Dravet Syndrome
AbstractDravet syndrome is a devastating genetic brain disorder caused by heterozygous loss-of-function mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene SCN1A. There are currently no treatments, but the upregulation of SCN1A healthy allele represents an appealing therapeutic strategy. In this study we identified a novel, evolutionary conserved mechanism controlling the expression of SCN1A that is mediated by an antisense non-coding RNA (SCN1ANAT). Using oligonucleotide-based compounds (AntagoNATs) targeting SCN1ANAT we were able to induce specific upregulation of SCN1A both in vitro and in vivo, in the brain of Dravet knock-in mouse model and a non-human primate. AntagoNAT-mediated upregulation of Scn1a in postnatal Dravet mice led to significant improvements in seizure phenotype and excitability of hippocampal interneurons. These results further elucidate the pathophysiology of Dravet syndrome and outline a possible new approach for the treatment of this and other genetic disorders with similar etiology
Bad influence? – an investigation into the purported negative influence of foreign domestic helpers on children's second language English acquisition
This paper explores the purported negative influence of foreign domestic helpers (FDHs) on child second language acquisition (SLA) by studying Hong Kong Cantonese children's listening ability in second language (L2) English. 31 kindergarten third graders aged 4;6 to 6, and 29 first year secondary students aged 11-14 who have had a Filipino domestic helper at home took part in the study. In addition, 34 youngsters (20 in kindergarten, 14 in secondary) who did not have a Filipino helper participated as controls. Results from two listening tasks (picture choosing task, sound discrimination task) suggest that informants do not differ from the control in their abilities to listen to American-, British-, and Hong Kong English, and that they are better at listening to Filipino-accented English than the control. These findings cast doubts on the anecdotal belief of the harmful effect FDHs have on children's language acquisition including an L2. Moreover, the additional effect of being familiar with another variety of English is arguably a desirable outcome given that English is used as a lingua franca among non-native speakers on a daily basis in this highly globalised world
Posterior eye shape measurement with retinal OCT compared to MRI
PURPOSE. Posterior eye shape assessment by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to study myopia. We tested the hypothesis that optical coherence tomography (OCT), as an alternative, could measure posterior eye shape similarly to MRI. METHODS. Macular spectral-domain OCT and brain MRI images previously acquired as part of the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases study were analyzed. The right eye in the MRI and OCT images was automatically segmented. Optical coherence tomography segmentations were corrected for optical and display distortions requiring biometry data. The segmentations were fitted to spheres and ellipsoids to obtain the posterior eye radius of curvature (Rc) and asphericity (Qxz). The differences in Rc and Qxz measured by MRI and OCT were tested using paired t-tests. Categorical assignments of prolateness or oblateness using Qxz were compared. RESULTS. Fifty-two subjects (67.8 ± 5.6 years old) with spherical equivalent refraction from +0.50 to -5.38 were included. The mean paired difference between MRI and original OCT posterior eye Rc was 24.03 ± 46.49 mm (P = 0.0005). For corrected OCT images, the difference in Rc decreased to -0.23 ± 2.47 mm (P = 0.51). The difference between MRI and OCT asphericity, Qxz, was -0.052 ± 0.343 (P = 0.28). However, categorical agreement was only moderate (j = 0.50). CONCLUSIONS. Distortion-corrected OCT measurements of Rc and Qxz were not statistically significantly different from MRI, although the moderate categorical agreement suggests that individual differences remained. This study provides evidence that with distortion correction, noninvasive office-based OCT could potentially be used instead of MRI for the study of posterior eye shape
Creation and annihilation of topological meron pairs in in-plane magnetized films
Merons which are topologically equivalent to one-half of skyrmions can exist only in pairs or groups in two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic (FM) systems. The recent discovery of meron lattice in chiral magnet Co8Zn9Mn3 raises the immediate challenging question that whether a single meron pair, which is the most fundamental topological structure in any 2D meron systems, can be created and stabilized in a continuous FM film? Utilizing winding number conservation, we develop a new method to create and stabilize a single pair of merons in a continuous Py film by local vortex imprinting from a Co disk. By observing the created meron pair directly within a magnetic field, we determine its topological structure unambiguously and explore the topological effect in its creation and annihilation processes. Our work opens a pathway towards developing and controlling topological structures in general magnetic systems without the restriction of perpendicular anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. © 2019, The Author(s).1
