A NEW HIGH-INTENSITY ULTRASONIC TECHNOLOGY FOR FOOD DEHYDRATION
12 pĂĄginas, 7 figurasAt present, there is a growing interest in the field of dehydration for preserving food. Ultrasonic energy represents a means to obtain dehydration without affecting the food. This paper deals with an experimental study about the use of high-intensity ultrasound for vegetable dehydration by using a new power ultrasound generator and a procedure in which ultrasonic vibrations are applied in direct contact with the product and under a certain static pressure. The drying effect of this new process is compared with that obtained from forced-air drying assisted by air-borne ultrasonic radiation and from a conventional hot-air drying. The results show that by using the new technology and procedure it is possible to reduce dramatically the treatment time and it is relatively easy to reach a final moisture content in the samples less than 1%. In addition, the product qualities are well preserved, the sample rehydration is higher than 70% and, because of the high efficiency of the new ultrasonic system employed, the energy consumption is low. As a consequence of the results a new technology for industrial applications is under development.Peer reviewe

Determination of Electromagnetic Source Direction as an Eigenvalue Problem
Low-frequency solar and interplanetary radio bursts are generated at
frequencies below the ionospheric plasma cutoff and must therefore be measured
in space, with deployable antenna systems. The problem of measuring both the
general direction and polarization of an electromagnetic source is commonly
solved by iterative fitting methods such as linear regression that deal
simultaneously with both directional and polarization parameters. We have
developed a scheme that separates the problem of deriving the source direction
from that of determining the polarization, avoiding iteration in a
multi-dimensional manifold. The crux of the method is to first determine the
source direction independently of concerns as to its polarization. Once the
source direction is known, its direct characterization in terms of Stokes
vectors in a single iteration if desired, is relatively simple. This study
applies the source-direction determination to radio signatures of flares
received by STEREO. We studied two previously analyzed radio type III bursts
and found that the results of the eigenvalue decomposition technique are
consistent with those obtained previously by Reiner et al. (Solar Phys. 259,
255, 2009). For the type III burst observed on 7 December 2007, the difference
in travel times from the derived source location to STEREO A and B is the same
as the difference in the onset times of the burst profiles measured by the two
spacecraft. This is consistent with emission originating from a single,
relatively compact source. For the second event of 29 January 2008, the
relative timing does not agree, suggesting emission from two sources separated
by 0.1 AU, or perhaps from an elongated region encompassing the apparent source

The Indonesian EQ-5D-5L Value Set
Background: The EQ-5D is one of the most used generic health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL) instruments worldwide. To make the EQ-5D suitable for use in economic evaluations, a societal-based value set is needed. Indonesia does not have such a value set. Objective: The aim of this study was to derive an EQ-5D-5L value set from the Indonesian general population. Methods: A representative sample aged 17Â years and over was recruited from the Indonesian general population. A multi-stage stratified quota method with respect to residence, gender, age, level of education, religion and ethnicity was utilized. Two elicitation techniques, the composite time trade-off (C-TTO) and discrete choice experiments (DCE) were applied. Interviews were undertaken by trained interviewers using computer-assisted face-to-face interviews with the EuroQol Valuation Technology (EQ-VT) platform. To estimate the value set, a hybrid regression model combining C-TTO and DCE data was used. Results: A total of 1054 respondents who completed the interview formed the sample for the analysis. Their characteristics were similar to those of the Indonesian population. Most self-reported health problems were observed in the pain/discomfort dimension (39.66%) and least in the self-care dimension (1.89%). In the value set, the maximum value was 1.000 for full health (health state â11111â) followed by the health state â11112â with value 0.921. The minimum value was â0.865 for the worst state (â55555â). Preference values were most affected by mobility and least by pain/discomfort. Conclusions: We now have a representative EQ-5D-5L value set for Indonesia. We expect our results will promote and facilitate health economic evaluations and HRQOL research in Indonesia
INTELLANCE 2/EORTC 1410 randomized phase II study of Depatux-M alone and with temozolomide vs temozolomide or lomustine in recurrent EGFR amplified glioblastoma
BACKGROUND: Depatuxizumab mafodotin (Depatux-M) is a tumor-specific antibody-drug conjugate consisting of an antibody (ABT-806) directed against activated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the toxin monomethylauristatin-F. We investigated Depatux-M in combination with temozolomide or as a single agent in a randomized controlled phase II trial in recurrent EGFR amplified glioblastoma. METHODS: Eligible were patients with centrally confirmed EGFR amplified glioblastoma at first recurrence after chemo-irradiation with temozolomide. Patients were randomized to either Depatux-M 1.25 mg/kg every 2 weeks intravenously, or this treatment combined with temozolomide 150-200 mg/m2 day 1-5 every 4 weeks, or either lomustine or temozolomide. The primary endpoint of the study was overall survival. RESULTS: Two hundred sixty patients were randomized. In the primary efficacy analysis with 199 events (median follow-up 15.0 mo), the hazard ratio (HR) for the combination arm compared with the control arm was 0.71 (95% CI = 0.50, 1.02; P = 0.062). The efficacy of Depatux-M monotherapy was comparable to that of the control arm (HR = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.73, 1.48; P = 0.83). The most frequent toxicity in Depatux-M treated patients was a reversible corneal epitheliopathy, occurring as grades 3-4 adverse events in 25-30% of patients. In the long-term follow-up analysis with median follow-up of 28.7 months, the HR for the comparison of the combination arm versus the control arm was 0.66 (95% CI = 0.48, 0.93). CONCLUSION: This trial suggests a possible role for the use of Depatux-M in combination with temozolomide in EGFR amplified recurrent glioblastoma, especially in patients relapsing well after the end of first-line adjuvant temozolomide treatment. Multiethnic meta-analysis identifies ancestry-specific and cross-ancestry loci for pulmonary function
Nearly 100 loci have been identified for pulmonary function, almost exclusively in studies of European ancestry populations. We extend previous research by meta-analyzing genome-wide association studies of 1000 Genomes imputed variants in relation to pulmonary function in a multiethnic population of 90,715 individuals of European (N = 60,552), African (N = 8429), Asian (N = 9959), and Hispanic/Latino (N = 11,775) ethnicities. We identify over 50 additional loci at genome-wide significance in ancestry-specific or multiethnic meta-analyses. Using recent fine-mapping methods incorporating functional annotation, gene expression, and differences in linkage disequilibrium between ethnicities, we further shed light on potential causal variants and genes at known and newly identified loci. Several of the novel genes encode proteins with predicted or established drug targets, including KCNK2 and CDK12.
