    Shear flow induced isotropic to nematic transition in a suspension of active filaments

    We study the effects of externally applied shear flow on a model of suspensions of motors and filaments, via the equations of active hydrodynamics [PRL {\bf 89} (2002) 058101; {\bf 92} (2004) 118101]. In the absence of shear, the orientationally ordered phase of {\it both} polar and apolar active particles is always unstable at zero-wavenumber. An imposed steady shear large enough to overcome the active stresses stabilises both apolar and moving polar phases. Our work is relevant to {\it in vitro} studies of active filaments, the reorientation of endothelial cells subject to shear flow and shear-induced motility of attached cells.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures submitted to Europhysics Letter

    Impact and flexural properties of hybrid jute/HTPET fibre reinforced epoxy composites

    In this study, hybridizing jute with high tenacity polyethylene terephthalate (HTPET) fibres has been proposed. Different hybrid jute/HTPET fibre reinforced epoxy composite samples have been fabricated with different weight ratios of HTPET, and subjected to charpy impact and three-point bending test. The results show that increasing the content of HTPET fibres in the composites will considerably improve their energy absorption capabilities and structural integrity after impact and bending test. However, hybrid composites with HTPET show lower flexural stress and bending modulus than pure jute composites

    Diagnostic values of serum levels of pepsinogens and gastrin-17 for screening gastritis and gastric cancer in a high risk area in Northern Iran

    Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is the second cause of cancer related death in the world. It may develop by progression from its precancerous condition, called gastric atrophy (GA) due to gastritis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of serum levels of pepsinogens (Pg) and gastrin-17 (G17) as non-invasive methods to discriminate GA or GC (GA/GC) patients. Materials and Methods: Subjects referred to gastrointestinal clinics of Golestan province of Iran during 2010 and 2011 were invited to participate. Serum levels of PgI, PgII and G17 were measured using a GastroPanel kit. Based on the pathological examination of endoscopic biopsy samples, subjects were classified into four groups: normal, non-atrophic gastritis, GA, and GC. Receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis was used to determine cut-off values. Indices of validity were calculated for serum markers. Results: Study groups were normal individuals (n=74), non-atrophic gastritis (n=90), GA (n=31) and GC patients (n=30). The best cut-off points for PgI, PgI/II ratio, G17 and HP were 80 μg/L, 10, 6 pmol/L, and 20 EIU, respectively. PgI could differentiate GA/GC with high accuracy (AUC=0.83; 95%CI: 0.76-0.89). The accuracy of a combination of PgI and PgI/II ratio for detecting GA/GC was also relatively high (AUC=0.78; 95%CI: 0.70-0.86). Conclusions: Our findings suggested PgI alone as well as a combination of PgI and PgI/II ratio are valid markers to differentiate GA/GC. Therefore, Pgs may be considered in conducting GC screening programs in high-risk areas

    Massive spinor fields in flat spacetimes with non-trivial topology

    The vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor is calculated for spin 121\over 2 massive fields in several multiply connected flat spacetimes. We examine the physical effects of topology on manifolds such as R3×S1R^3 \times S^1, R2×T2R^2\times T^2, R1×T3R^1 \times T^3, the Mobius strip and the Klein bottle. We find that the spinor vacuum stress tensor has the opposite sign to, and twice the magnitude of, the scalar tensor in orientable manifolds. Extending the above considerations to the case of Misner spacetime, we calculate the vacuum expectation value of spinor stress-energy tensor in this space and discuss its implications for the chronology protection conjecture.Comment: 18 pages, Some of the equations in section VI as well as typographical errors corrected, 5 figures, Revtex

    Epidemiology of Shigella-Associated diarrhea in Gorgan, north of Iran

    Objective : Shigella is an important etiological agent for diarrhea and especially dysentery. Shigellosis is an intestinal infection that is a major public health problem in many developing countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Shigella and its various species in diarrheal samples in Gorgan located in the north of Iran. Materials and Methods: Between January-December 2005, the epidemiology of Shigella- associated diarrhea was studied among 634 patients in Gorgan. The diarrheal samples accompanied with a questionnaire, which contained the demographic and main symptoms of the patients, were transported to the laboratory and inoculated in different culture media. Colonies suspected to be of Shigella were detected using differential biochemical tests and subsequently, the serotype of Shigella was defined using antisera. Results : Shigella was isolated from 56/634 diarrheal samples) (8.8%) of which S. sonnei was the predominant species (55%). Occurrence of Schigella was highest in the 2-5 years′ age group (70.9%) and highest in summer (73.2%) with the most frequent clinical manifestation being abdominal pain (67.8%). The prevalence of Shigella in males and females was 8 and 9.8% respectively, but this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: It has been shown that Shigella sonnei is the most common Shigella serogroup among 2-5 year-old children in Gorgan. It is therefore suggested that hygienic training be given to childcare attendants and the children themselves

    A Complete Characterization of the Gap between Convexity and SOS-Convexity

    Our first contribution in this paper is to prove that three natural sum of squares (sos) based sufficient conditions for convexity of polynomials, via the definition of convexity, its first order characterization, and its second order characterization, are equivalent. These three equivalent algebraic conditions, henceforth referred to as sos-convexity, can be checked by semidefinite programming whereas deciding convexity is NP-hard. If we denote the set of convex and sos-convex polynomials in nn variables of degree dd with C~n,d\tilde{C}_{n,d} and ΣC~n,d\tilde{\Sigma C}_{n,d} respectively, then our main contribution is to prove that C~n,d=ΣC~n,d\tilde{C}_{n,d}=\tilde{\Sigma C}_{n,d} if and only if n=1n=1 or d=2d=2 or (n,d)=(2,4)(n,d)=(2,4). We also present a complete characterization for forms (homogeneous polynomials) except for the case (n,d)=(3,4)(n,d)=(3,4) which is joint work with G. Blekherman and is to be published elsewhere. Our result states that the set Cn,dC_{n,d} of convex forms in nn variables of degree dd equals the set ΣCn,d\Sigma C_{n,d} of sos-convex forms if and only if n=2n=2 or d=2d=2 or (n,d)=(3,4)(n,d)=(3,4). To prove these results, we present in particular explicit examples of polynomials in C~2,6ΣC~2,6\tilde{C}_{2,6}\setminus\tilde{\Sigma C}_{2,6} and C~3,4ΣC~3,4\tilde{C}_{3,4}\setminus\tilde{\Sigma C}_{3,4} and forms in C3,6ΣC3,6C_{3,6}\setminus\Sigma C_{3,6} and C4,4ΣC4,4C_{4,4}\setminus\Sigma C_{4,4}, and a general procedure for constructing forms in Cn,d+2ΣCn,d+2C_{n,d+2}\setminus\Sigma C_{n,d+2} from nonnegative but not sos forms in nn variables and degree dd.     Maternal Experiences of Their Unborn Child's Spiritual Care: Patterns of Abstinence in Iran

    Preparing for pregnancy and childbirth has significant association with spirituality. Review of the literature shows that the spirituality of the “unborn child” has not yet attracted much critical attention. This study was conducted with the aim of exploration of maternal behaviors associated with the spiritual health of the unborn child. A qualitative approach was used to investigate the research question. Twenty-seven in-depth unstructured interviews were conducted with 22 Iranian mothers in Tehran city (Iran) who were pregnant or had experienced pregnancy in 2012-2013. Data analysis was carried out using a conventional content analysis approach. “Refusing to eat forbidden food,” “Overcoming mental adversity,” “Regulating one’s social interactions,” “Preventing the effects of harmful environments on the senses,” “Avoidance of using insulting and abusive language,” “Keeping one’s mind and spirit free from evil traits,” and “Refraining from damaging behaviors” were important experiences that the mothers used for “Holistic Abstinence.” The results provide new information about the subjective experiences of Iranian women on the patterns of abstinence for the midwives, research community, policy makers, and planners of maternal and child health care services in order to contribute to holistic, culturally, and religiously competent prenatal care for Muslim pregnant women throughout the world

    Stabilization of test particles in Induced Matter Kaluza-Klein theory
