Can CPT Symmetry Be Tested With K^0 vs \bar{K}^0--> \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 Decays?
We show that the CP-violating effect in K^0 vs \bar K^0-->\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0
decays differs from that in K_{\rm L}-->\pi^+\pi^-, K_{\rm L}-->\pi^0\pi^0 or
the semileptonic K_{\rm L} transitions, if there exists CPT violation in
K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing. A delicate measurement of this difference in the KTeV
experiment and at the \phi factory will provide a new test of CPT symmetry in

No Eigenvalue in Finite Quantum Electrodynamics
We re-examine Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) with massless electron as a
finite quantum field theory as advocated by Gell-Mann-Low, Baker-Johnson,
Adler, Jackiw and others. We analyze the Dyson-Schwinger equation satisfied by
the massless electron in finite QED and conclude that the theory admits no

A Shape Theorem for Riemannian First-Passage Percolation
Riemannian first-passage percolation (FPP) is a continuum model, with a
distance function arising from a random Riemannian metric in . Our main
result is a shape theorem for this model, which says that large balls under
this metric converge to a deterministic shape under rescaling. As a
consequence, we show that smooth random Riemannian metrics are geodesically
complete with probability one
Interhemispheric comparison of atmospheric circulation features as evaluated from Nimbus satellite data
A relationship is established between relative geostrophic vorticity on an isobaric surface and the Laplacian of the underlying layer-mean temperature. This relationship is used to investigate the distribution of vorticity and baroclinicity in a jet-stream model which is constantly recurrent in the winter troposphere. The investigation shows that the baroclinic and vorticity fields of the extratropical troposphere must be bifurcated with two extrema in the middle and subpolar latitudes. This pattern is present in daily tropospheric meridional cross-sections. The reasons for the disappearance of bifurcation in the time-and-longitude averaged distributions are discussed
Cluster variation - Pade` approximants method for the simple cubic Ising model
The cluster variation - Pade` approximant method is a recently proposed tool,
based on the extrapolation of low/high temperature results obtained with the
cluster variation method, for the determination of critical parameters in
Ising-like models. Here the method is applied to the three-dimensional simple
cubic Ising model, and new results, obtained with an 18-site basic cluster, are
reported. Other techniques for extracting non-classical critical exponents are
also applied and their results compared with those by the cluster variation -

Findings are presented for IRIS data from NIMBUS 3 in mapping the global ozone distribution. The seasonal and regional variations of ozone, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, reveal features that were not evident from the sparse ground-based ozone observation network in this hemisphere. Alternating host cell tropism shapes the persistence, evolution and coexistence of Epstein-Barr virus infections in human
ManuscriptEpstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects and can persist in a majority of people worldwide. Within an infected host, EBV targets two major cell types, B cells and epithelial cells, and viruses emerging from one cell type preferentially infect the other. We use mathematical models to understand why EBV infects epithelial cells when B cells serve as a stable refuge for the virus and how switching between infecting each cell type affects virus persistence and shedding. We propose a mathematical model to describe the regulation of EBV infection within a host. This model is used to study the effects of parameter values on optimal viral strategies for transmission, persistence, and intrahost competition. Most often, the optimal strategy to maximize transmission is for viruses to infect epithelial cells, but the optimal strategy for maximizing intrahost competition is for viruses to mainly infect B cells. Applying the results of the within-host model, we derive a model of EBV dynamics in a homogeneous population of hosts that includes superinfection. We use this model to study the conditions necessary for invasion and coexistence of various viral strategies at the population level. When the importance of intrahost competition is weak, we show that coexistence of diff erent strategies is possible
Mathematical modeling the age dependence of Epstein-Barr virus associated infectious mononucleosis
ManuscriptMost people get Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection at young age and are asymptomatic. Primary EBV infection in adolescents and young adults however, often leads to infectious mononucleosis (IM) with symptoms including fever, fatigue, and sore throat that can persist for months. Expansion in the number of CD8+ T cells, especially against EBV lytic proteins, are the main cause of these symptoms. We propose a mathematical model for the regulation of EBV infection within a host to address the dependence of IM on age. This model tracks the number of virus, infected B cell and epithelial cell, and CD8+ T-cell responses to the infection. We use this model to investigate three hypotheses for the high incidence of IM in teenagers and young adults: saliva and antibody eff ects that increase with age, high cross-reactive T-cell responses, and a high initial viral load. The model supports the first two of these hypotheses, and suggests that variation in host antibody responses and the complexity of the pre-existing cross-reactive T cell repertoire, both of which depend on age, may play important roles in the etiology of IM
