Impurity Effect on Superconducting Properties in Molecular Substituted Organic Superconductor -(ET)Cu(NCS)
We report an impurity effect in the organic superconductor
-(ET)Cu(NCS) by substitution of the ET molecule with an
analogue, bis(methyleneditio)tetrathiafulvalene (MT). The superconducting
transition temperature decreases with increasing substitution. The in-plane
magnetic penetration depth is enhanced with substitution, which is
quantitatively attributed to the decrease in the in-plane mean free path. The
enhancement of the penetration depth can also explain the reduction of the

Possible Phase Transition Deep Inside the Hidden Order Phase of Ultraclean URu2Si2
To elucidate the underlying nature of the hidden order (HO) state in
heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2, we measure electrical transport properties of
ultraclean crystals in a high field/low temperature regime. Unlike previous
studies, the present system with much less impurity scattering resolves a
distinct anomaly of the Hall resistivity at H*=22.5 T well below the
destruction field of the HO phase ~36 T. In addition, a novel quantum
oscillation appears above a magnetic field slightly below H*. These results
indicate an abrupt reconstruction of the Fermi surface, which implies a
possible phase transition well within the HO phase caused by a band-dependent
destruction of the HO parameter. The present results definitely indicate that

Inhomogeneous superconductivity in organic conductors: role of disorder and magnetic field
Several experimental studies have shown the presence of spatially
inhomogeneous phase coexistence of superconducting and non superconducting
domains in low dimensional organic superconductors. The superconducting
properties of these systems are found to be strongly dependent on the amount of
disorder introduced in the sample regardless of its origin. The suppression of
the superconducting transition temperature shows clear discrepancy with
the result expected from the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law giving the behavior of
with impurities. Based on the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we derive
a model to account for the striking feature of in organic superconductors
for different types of disorder by considering the segregated texture of the
system. We show that the calculated quantitatively agrees with
experiments. We also focus on the role of superconducting fluctuations on the
upper critical fields of layered superconductors showing slab
structure where superconducting domains are sandwiched by non-superconducting

Angiotensin-converting enzyme gene and retinal arteriolar narrowing: The Funagata Study
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism is associated with retinal arteriolar narrowing, a subclinical marker of chronic hypertension. The Funagata Study examined a population-based sample of Japanese aged 35+ years; 368 participants had both retinal vessel diameter measurements and ACE insertion/deletion (ACE I/D) polymorphism analyses performed. Assessment of retinal vessel diameter and retinal vessel wall signs followed the protocols used in the Blue Mountains Eye Study. ACE gene polymorphisms D/D, I/D and I/I were present in 34 (9.2%), 170 (46.2%) and 164 (44.5%) participants, respectively, distributed in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. After multivariable adjustment, retinal arteriolar diameter was significantly narrower in subjects with the D/D genotype compared to subjects with I/D and I/I genotypes (mean difference −6.49 μm, 95% confidence interval (CI): −12.86 μm, −0.11 μm). Our study suggests that the ACE I/D polymorphism may be associated with subclinical structural arteriolar changes related to chronic hypertension
Nine weeks of supplementation with a multi-nutrient product augments gains in lean mass, strength, and muscular performance in resistance trained men
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of supplementation with Gaspari Nutrition's SOmaxP Maximum Performance™ (SOmaxP) versus a comparator product (CP) containing an equal amount of creatine (4 g), carbohydrate (39 g maltodextrin), and protein (7 g whey protein hydrolysate) on muscular strength, muscular endurance, and body composition during nine weeks of intense resistance training.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using a prospective, randomized, double-blind design, 20 healthy men (mean ± SD age, height, weight, % body fat: 22.9 ± 2.6 y, 178.4 ± 5.7 cm, 80.5 ± 6.6 kg, 16.6 ± 4.0%) were matched for age, body weight, resistance training history, bench press strength, bench press endurance, and percent body fat and then randomly assigned via the ABBA procedure to ingest 1/2 scoop (dissolved in 15 oz water) of SOmaxP or CP prior to, and another 1/2 scoop (dissolved in 15 oz water) during resistance exercise. Body composition (DEXA), muscular performance (1-RM bench press and repetitions to failure [RTF: 3 sets × baseline body weight, 60-sec rest between sets]), and clinical blood chemistries were measured at baseline and after nine weeks of supplementation and training. Subjects were required to maintain their normal dietary habits and follow a specific, progressive overload resistance training program (4-days/wk, upper body/lower body split) during the study. An intent-to-treat approach was used and data were analyzed via ANCOVA using baseline values as the covariate. Statistical significance was set <it>a priori </it>at p ≤ 0.05.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>When adjusted for initial differences, significant between group post-test means were noted in: 1-RM bench press (SOmaxP: 133.3 ± 1.3 kg [19.8% increase] vs. CP: 128.5 ± 1.3 kg [15.3% increase]; p < 0.019); lean mass (SOmaxP: 64.1 ± 0.4 kg [2.4% increase] vs. 62.8 ± 0.4 kg [0.27% increase], p < 0.049); RTF (SOmaxP: 33.3 ± 1.1 reps [44.8% increase] vs. 27.8 ± 1.1 reps [20.9% increase], p < 0.004); and fat mass (SOmaxP: 12.06 ± 0.53 kg [9.8% decrease] vs. 13.90 ± 0.53 kg [4.1% increase], p < 0.024). No statistically significant differences in vital signs (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures) or clinical blood chemistries were noted.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These data indicate that compared to CP, SOmaxP administration augments and increases gains in lean mass, bench press strength, and muscular performance during nine weeks of intense resistance training. Studies designed to confirm these results and clarify the molecular mechanisms by which SOmaxP exerts the observed salutary effects have begun. Both SOmaxP and the CP were well-tolerated, and no supplement safety issues were identified.</p
Dynamical complexity in the C.elegans neural network
We model the neuronal circuit of the C.elegans soil worm in terms of a Hindmarsh-Rose system of ordinary differential equa- tions, dividing its circuit into six communities which are determined via the Walktrap and Louvain methods. Using the numerical solution of these equations, we analyze important measures of dynamical com- plexity, namely synchronicity, the largest Lyapunov exponent, and the ?AR auto-regressive integrated information theory measure. We show that ?AR provides a useful measure of the information contained in the C.elegans brain dynamic network. Our analysis reveals that the C.elegans brain dynamic network generates more information than the sum of its constituent parts, and that attains higher levels of integrated information for couplings for which either all its communities are highly synchronized, or there is a mixed state of highly synchronized and de- synchronized communities
γ-Secretase inhibitor enhances antitumour effect of radiation in Notch-expressing lung cancer
BACKGROUND: Notch receptor has an important role in both development and cancer. We previously reported that inhibition of the Notch3 by γ-secretase inhibitor (GSI) induces apoptosis and suppresses tumour proliferation in non-small-cell lung cancer. Although radiation is reported to induce Notch activation, little is known about the relationship between radiation and Notch pathway. METHODS: We examined the effect of combining GSI and radiation at different dosing in three Notch expressing lung cancer cell lines. The cytotoxic effect of GSI and radiation was evaluated using MTT assay and clonogenic assay in vitro and xenograft models. Expressions of Notch pathway, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and Bcl-2 family proteins were investigated using western blot analysis. RESULTS: We discovered that the antitumour effect of combining GSI and radiation was dependent on treatment schedule. γ-Secretase inhibitor administration after radiation had the greatest growth inhibition of lung cancer in vitro and in vivo. We showed that the combination induced apoptosis of lung cancer cell lines through the regulation of MAPK and Bcl-2 family proteins. Furthermore, activation of Notch after radiation was ameliorated by GSI administration, suggesting that treatment with GSI prevents Notch-induced radiation resistance. CONCLUSION: Notch has an important role in lung cancer. Treatment with GSI after radiation can significantly enhance radiation-mediated tumour cytotoxicity
タンザニア ホクトウブ サン Rice yellow mottle virus ノ カイセキ
アフリカにおいて重要な穀物のひとつであるイネ(Oryza sativa L.)は,Rice yellow mottle virusによる重大な被害を受けており,タンザニアにも広がっている。水稲栽培の最も進んだ地域の一つであるローワーモシ灌漑地区を含む北東部で,ウイルス病様病徴の認められる灌漑水田において検体の採集を行った。採集した試料は,電子顕微鏡を用いたウイルス粒子の観察,DAS-ELISA法,PCR法による検出を行ったところ,RYMVの感染が確認された。3つの分離株Tz-12-20,Tz12-22,Tz10-36の PCR産物については,遺伝子解析を行い系統と血清型の判別を行った。その結果,S4型(Pinel et al., 2009)分離株であることが示され,また,系統解析から,ビクトリア湖周辺分離株であるS4-lvやS4-lm,S4-mgとは異なる単一のクラスターを形成し,新しいグループ(S4-mk)であると考えられた。さらに系統樹から,S4-mk分離株はケニアの西南地域からタンザニアの北東部において広がっている分離株であることを示した。系統樹において単一のクラスターを形成した一方,S4-mk分離株と他のS4型分離株(S4-lv,S4-lm,S4-mg)間のアミノ酸配列で,96%以上の高い相同性を示した。また,アミノ酸配列から血清型の判別が可能(Fargette et al., 2002)であることから,タンザニア産RYMVでこの手法を用いて血清型を検討したところ,類別可能な5種類の血清型のうち,Ser4に分類された。Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important cereal-grain in some African countries and known to be attacked by Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV). Rice plants with virus like symptoms were collected from lower Moshi and other areas in the north-eastern region of Tanzania. RYMV was detected by DAS-ELISA, RT-PCR and/or electron microscopy from almost all collected samples. Some RYMV isolates were sequenced and identified as strain S4. Also, three of them, Tz-12-20, Tz-12-22 and Tz-10-36, were clustered as a new group named S4-mk (Mt. Kilimanjaro). Cluster of S4-mk formed a monophyletic group of isolates in strain S4-lv reported from the Tanzanian side of the Lake Victoria. However, S4-mk and S4-lv lineages are separated from each other and S4-mk has the characteristic three amino acid substitutions. The isolates of S4-mk were also closely related to that of strain S4-mg. Amino acid sequences of the coat protein of the isolates in group S4-mk showed over 96% identity with those in other strain S4 varieties, S4-lv, S4-mg and S4-lm. The phylogenetic tree also indicated the possibility of strain S4-mk to have dispersed from south-western Kenya to north eastern Tanzania. As for the serotyping, followed by Fargette et al. (2002), these three isolates in S4-mk were classified into serotype 4
A Subset of Osteoblasts Expressing High Endogenous Levels of PPARγ Switches Fate to Adipocytes in the Rat Calvaria Cell Culture Model
Understanding fate choice and fate switching between the osteoblast lineage (ObL) and adipocyte lineage (AdL) is important to understand both the developmental inter-relationships between osteoblasts and adipocytes and the impact of changes in fate allocation between the two lineages in normal aging and certain diseases. The goal of this study was to determine when during lineage progression ObL cells are susceptible to an AdL fate switch by activation of endogenous peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)gamma.Multiple rat calvaria cells within the ObL developmental hierarchy were isolated by either fractionation on the basis of expression of alkaline phosphatase or retrospective identification of single cell-derived colonies, and treated with BRL-49653 (BRL), a synthetic ligand for PPARgamma. About 30% of the total single cell-derived colonies expressed adipogenic potential (defined cytochemically) when BRL was present. Profiling of ObL and AdL markers by qRT-PCR on amplified cRNA from over 160 colonies revealed that BRL-dependent adipogenic potential correlated with endogenous PPARgamma mRNA levels. Unexpectedly, a significant subset of relatively mature ObL cells exhibited osteo-adipogenic bipotentiality. Western blotting and immunocytochemistry confirmed that ObL cells co-expressed multiple mesenchymal lineage determinants (runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), PPARgamma, Sox9 and MyoD which localized in the cytoplasm initially, and only Runx2 translocated to the nucleus during ObL progression. Notably, however, some cells exhibited both PPARgamma and Runx2 nuclear labeling with concomitant upregulation of expression of their target genes with BRL treatment.We conclude that not only immature but a subset of relatively mature ObL cells characterized by relatively high levels of endogenous PPARgamma expression can be switched to the AdL. The fact that some ObL cells maintain capacity for adipogenic fate selection even at relatively mature developmental stages implies an unexpected plasticity with important implications in normal and pathological bone development
