Degenerate mixing of plasma waves on cold, magnetized single-species plasmas
In the cold-fluid dispersion relation ω = ω_p/[1+(k_⊥/k_z)^(2]1/2) for Trivelpiece-Gould waves on an infinitely long magnetized plasma cylinder, the transverse and axial wavenumbers appear only in the combination k_⊥/k_z. As a result, for any frequency ω<ω_p, there are infinitely many degenerate waves, all having the same value of k_⊥/k_z. On a cold finite-length plasma column, these degenerate waves reflect into one another at the ends; thus, each standing-wave normal mode of the bounded plasma is a mixture of many degenerate waves, not a single standing wave as is often assumed. A striking feature of the many-wave modes is that the short-wavelength waves often add constructively along resonance cones given by dz/dr = ±(ω_p^2/ω^2-1)^(1/2). Also, the presence of short wavelengths in the admixture for a predominantly long-wavelength mode enhances the viscous damping beyond what the single-wave approximation would predict. Here, numerical solutions are obtained for modes of a cylindrical plasma column with rounded ends. Exploiting the fact that the modes of a spheroidal plasma are known analytically (the Dubin modes), a perturbation analysis is used to investigate the mixing of low-order, nearly degenerate Dubin modes caused by small deformations of a plasma spheroid
Temporal and spatial plasma wave echoes
It is shown that, if a longitudinal wave is excited in a collision-free plasma and Landau-damps away, and later a second wave is excited and also damps away, then a third wave will spontaneously appear in the plasma. This wave appears long after the first two waves have damped away at a time proportional to the interval between the first two waves, and is in that sense an echo. It is also shown that, if a wave is continuously excited at one point in a plasma and a second wave is continuously excited many Landau damping lengths from the first point, then a third wave will spontaneously appear many Landau damping lengths from the second point. Fundamentally, plasma wave echoes are possible because of the reversible nature of Landau damping. However, small-angle Coulomb collisions are very effective in destroying the echo
The Energy of a Plasma in the Classical Limit
When \lambda_{T} << d_{T}, where \lambda_{T} is the de Broglie wavelength and
d_{T}, the distance of closest approach of thermal electrons, a classical
analysis of the energy of a plasma can be made. In all the classical analysis
made until now, it was assumed that the frequency of the fluctuations \omega <<
T (k_{B}=\hbar=1). Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we evaluate the
energy of a plasma, allowing the frequency of the fluctuations to be arbitrary.
We find that the energy density is appreciably larger than previously thought
for many interesting plasmas, such as the plasma of the Universe before the

Phase transition in the collisionless regime for wave-particle interaction
Gibbs statistical mechanics is derived for the Hamiltonian system coupling
self-consistently a wave to N particles. This identifies Landau damping with a
regime where a second order phase transition occurs. For nonequilibrium initial
data with warm particles, a critical initial wave intensity is found: above it,
thermodynamics predicts a finite wave amplitude in the limit of infinite N;
below it, the equilibrium amplitude vanishes. Simulations support these
predictions providing new insight on the long-time nonlinear fate of the wave

Hyaluronan (HA) is a ubiquitous extracellular matrix (ECM) glycosaminoglycan synthesized by three different enzymes, hyaluronan synthase (HAS)1, 2, and 3. HA synthesis mediated by HAS3 promotes inflammation and is pathogenic in animal models of human lung and intestinal disease. Liver fibrosis is a common endpoint to chronic liver injury and inflammation for which there is no cure. Although plasma HA is a commonly used biomarker for liver disease, if and how HA contributes to disease pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that HA synthesized by HAS3 enhances inflammation and fibrosis. To test this hypothesis, we exposed wild-type or Has3−/− mice to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) once (acute) or ten (chronic) times.
Results
HAS3-deficient mice exhibited increased hepatic injury and inflammatory chemokine production 48 h after acute CCl4; this was associated with a threefold reduction in plasma HA levels and alterations in the proportions of specific molecular weight HA polymer pools. Hepatic accumulation of fibrosis-associated transcripts was also greater in livers from HAS3-deficient mice compared to controls after acute CCl4 exposure. Surprisingly, fibrosis was not different between genotypes. Hepatic matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)13 mRNA and MMP13 activity was greater in livers from Has3-null mice after chronic CCl4; this was prevented by a MMP13-specific inhibitor. Collectively, these data suggest that Has3, or more likely HA produced by HAS3, limits hepatic inflammation after acute injury and attenuates MMP13-mediated matrix metabolism after chronic injury.
Conclusions
These data suggest that HA should be investigated further as a novel therapeutic target for acute and chronic liver disease.

Do psychosocial job stressors differentially affect the sleep quality of men and women? A study using the HILDA Survey
The aim of this study was to investigate whether gender was an effect modifier of the relationship between three psychosocial job stressors and sleep quality, in a representative sample of 7280 employed Australians. We conducted linear regressions and effect measure modification analyses. Low job control, high job demands and low job security were associated with poorer sleep quality. There was evidence of effect modification of the relationship between job security and sleep quality by gender on the additive scale, indicating that the combined effect of being male and having low job security is greater than the summed interactive effect.Peer reviewe

Improving Orbit Estimates for Incomplete Orbits with a New Approach to Priors -- with Applications from Black Holes to Planets
We propose a new approach to Bayesian prior probability distributions
(priors) that can improve orbital solutions for low-phase-coverage orbits,
where data cover less than approximately 40% of an orbit. In instances of low
phase coverage such as with stellar orbits in the Galactic center or with
directly-imaged exoplanets, data have low constraining power and thus priors
can bias parameter estimates and produce under-estimated confidence intervals.
Uniform priors, which are commonly assumed in orbit fitting, are notorious for
this. We propose a new observable-based prior paradigm that is based on
uniformity in observables. We compare performance of this observable-based
prior and of commonly assumed uniform priors using Galactic center and
directly-imaged exoplanet (HR 8799) data. The observable-based prior can reduce
biases in model parameters by a factor of two and helps avoid under-estimation
of confidence intervals for simulations with less than about 40% phase
coverage. Above this threshold, orbital solutions for objects with sufficient
phase coverage such as S0-2, a short-period star at the Galactic center with
full phase coverage, are consistent with previously published results. Below
this threshold, the observable-based prior limits prior influence in regions of
prior dominance and increases data influence. Using the observable-based prior,
HR 8799 orbital analyses favor lower eccentricity orbits and provide stronger
evidence that the four planets have a consistent inclination around 30 degrees
to within 1-sigma. This analysis also allows for the possibility of
coplanarity. We present metrics to quantify improvements in orbital estimates
with different priors so that observable-based prior frameworks can be tested
