Quarkyonic Matter and Chiral Spirals
The nuclear matter, deconfined quark matter, and Quarkyonic matter in low
temperature region are classified based on the 1/Nc expansion. The chiral
symmetry in the Quarkyonic matter is investigated by taking into account
condensations of chiral particle-hole pairs. It is argued that the chiral
symmetry and parity are locally violated by the formation of chiral spirals, <
psibar exp(2 i mu z gamma^0 gamma^z) psi >. An extension to multiple chiral
spirals is also briefly discussed.Comment: Prepared for Hot Quark 2010, 4 page
Baryons and Baryonic Matter in Holographic QCD from Superstring
We study baryons and baryonic matter in holographic QCD using a
D4/D8/ multi-D-brane system in the superstring theory. We obtain
the chiral soliton solution for baryons in the four-dimensional meson theory
derived from the multi-D-brane system. For the analysis of finite
baryon-density matter, we investigate the chiral soliton on in
holographic QCD, and find the delocalization of the soliton, i.e., the swelling
of baryons in dense matter

Impact of irreversibility and uncertainty on the timing of infrastructure projects
This paper argues that because of the irreversibility and uncertainty associated with Build - Operate - Transfer (BOT) infrastructure projects, their financial evaluation should also routinely include the determination of the value of the option to defer the construction start-up. This ensures that project viability is comprehensively assessed before any revenue or loan guarantees are considered by project sponsors to support the project. This paper shows that the framework can be used even in the context of the intuitive binomial lattice model. This requires estimating volatility directly from the evolution of the net operating income while accounting for the correlation between the revenue and costs functions. This approach ensures that the uncertainties usually associated with toll revenues, in particular, are thoroughly investigated and their impact on project viability is thoroughly assessed. This paper illustrates the usefulness of the framework with data from an actual (BOT) toll road project. The results show that by postponing the project for a couple of years the project turns out to be viable, whereas it was not without the deferral. The evaluation approach proposed therefore provides a better framework for determining when and the extent of government financial support, if any, that may be needed to support a BOT project on the basis of project economics. The analysis may also be applicable to private sector investment projects, which are characterized by irreversibility and a high rate of uncertainty
Biotechnological Approaches to Facilitate Gold Recovery from Double Refractory Gold Ores
Double refractory gold ore (DRGO) not only include ppt levels of gold grains locked in sulfide minerals but also a problematic amount of carbonaceous matter. This causes a significant recovery loss of gold during cyanidation because of the strong affinity of the Au(CN)2− with the carbonaceous matter. Combustion decreases the carbonaceous matter content, but also emits pollutant gases like CO2, SO2 and As2O3. Therefore, environmentally-friendly solutions have been explored by using biotechnology. Due to the very small amount of the above targets in the ore, it is challenging to show evidential changes in solid-phase before and after the biomineral processing of DRGO. This chapter introduces the mineralogical and chemical changes in the various solid residues produced during a sequential biotreatment, consisting of the liberation of gold from sulfides by an iron-oxidizer and decomposition of carbonaceous matter by lignin-degrading enzymes (lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, laccase) secreted from a white rot-fungus, which successfully improved of gold recovery to over 90%. In addition, further development of biotechnology in the recovery of gold from DRGO is addressed
Chiral helix in AdS/CFT with flavor
The D3/D7 holographic model aims at a better approximation to QCD by adding
to N=4 SYM theory N_f of N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the fundamental
representation of SU(N_c) -- the "flavor fields" representing the quarks.
Motivated by a recent observation of the importance of the Wess-Zumino-like
(WZ) term for realizing the chiral magnetic effect within this model, we
revisit the phase diagram of the finite temperature, massless D3/D7 model in
the presence of external electric/magnetic fields and at finite chemical
potential. We point out that the A-V-V triangle anomaly represented by the WZ
term in the D7 brane probe action implies the existence of new phases that have
been overlooked in the previous studies. In the case of an external magnetic
field and at finite chemical potential, we find a "chiral helix" phase in which
the U(1)_A angle of D7 brane embedding increases monotonically along the
direction of the magnetic field -- this is a geometric realization of the
chiral spiral phase in QCD. We also show that in the case of parallel electric
and magnetic fields (E,B) there exists a phase in which the D7 brane
spontaneously begins to rotate, so that the U(1)_A angle changes as a function
of time -- this may be called the "spontaneous rotation" phase; it is a
geometrical realization of a phase with non-zero chiral chemical potential. Our
results call for a more thorough study of the (T,B,E,\mu) phase diagram of the
massless D3/D7 model taking a complete account of the WZ term.
We also speculate about the possible phase diagram in the massive case.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure
How large is "large " for Nuclear matter?
We argue that a so far neglected dimensionless scale, the number of neighbors
in a closely packed system, is relevant for the convergence of the large
expansion at high chemical potential. It is only when the number of colors is
large w.r.t. this new scale (\sim \order{10}) that a convergent large
limit is reached. This provides an explanation as to why the large
expansion, qualitatively successful in in vacuum QCD, fails to describe high
baryo-chemical potential systems, such as nuclear matter. It also means that
phenomenological claims about high density matter based on large
extrapolations should be treated with caution.Comment: Proceedings of CPOD2010 conference, in Dubna. Results based on

Holographic chiral magnetic spiral
We study the ground state of baryonic/axial matter at zero temperature
chiral-symmetry broken phase under a large magnetic field, in the framework of
holographic QCD by Sakai-Sugimoto. Our study is motivated by a recent proposal
of chiral magnetic spiral phase that has been argued to be favored against
previously studied phase of homogeneous distribution of axial/baryonic currents
in terms of meson super-currents dictated by triangle anomalies in QCD. Our
results provide an existence proof of chiral magnetic spiral in strong coupling
regime via holography, at least for large axial chemical potentials, whereas we
don't find the phenomenon in the case of purely baryonic chemical potential.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figure
