Review of Engaging Education: Developing Emotional Literacy, Equity and Co-education. Brian Matthews. (Book Review)
The book is only about a fraction of its title Engaging Education. His section on âengaging the emotionsâ sums this up: whereas the book is largely about engaging the emotions positively, the definition of âEngagingâ is more far reaching: âthat pupils should be involved in their learning; be active and absorbed and not just passive recipients of a set curriculum. Additionally, they should feel engaged in the processes of education and have some input into creating their own agendas for learningâ (p.2). A biophysical model of prokaryotic diversity in geothermal hot springs
Recent field investigations of photosynthetic bacteria living in geothermal
hot spring environments have revealed surprisingly complex ecosystems, with an
unexpected level of genetic diversity. One case of particular interest involves
the distribution along hot spring thermal gradients of genetically distinct
bacterial strains that differ in their preferred temperatures for reproduction
and photosynthesis. In such systems, a single variable, temperature, defines
the relevant environmental variation. In spite of this, each region along the
thermal gradient exhibits multiple strains of photosynthetic bacteria adapted
to several distinct thermal optima, rather than the expected single thermal
strain adapted to the local environmental temperature. Here we analyze
microbiology data from several ecological studies to show that the thermal
distribution field data exhibit several universal features independent of
location and specific bacterial strain. These include the distribution of
optimal temperatures of different thermal strains and the functional dependence
of the net population density on temperature. Further, we present a simple
population dynamics model of these systems that is highly constrained by
biophysical data and by physical features of the environment. This model can
explain in detail the observed diversity of different strains of the
photosynthetic bacteria. It also reproduces the observed thermal population
distributions, as well as certain features of population dynamics observed in
laboratory studies of the same organisms
Use of MMG signals for the control of powered orthotic devices: Development of a rectus femoris measurement protocol

The protocol is specified in terms of the following: measurement equipment, signal processing requirements, human postural requirements, test rig, sensor placement, sensor dermal fixation, and test procedure. Preliminary tests of the statistical nature of rectus femoris MMG signals were performed, and Gaussianity was evaluated by means of a two-sided Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. For all 100 MMG data sets obtained from the testing of two volunteers, the null hypothesis of Gaussianity was rejected at the 1%, 5%, and 10%âsignificance levels. Most skewness values were found to be greater than 0.0, while all kurtosis values were found to be greater than 3.0. A statistical convergence analysis also performed on the same 100 MMG data sets suggested that 25 MMG acquisitions should prove sufficient to statistically characterize rectus femoris MMG. This conclusion is supported by the qualitative characteristics of the mean rectus femoris MMG power spectral densities obtained using 25 averages
[89Zr]Oxinate4 for long-term in vivo cell tracking by positron emission tomography
Purpose 111In (typically as [111In]oxinate3) is a gold standard
radiolabel for cell tracking in humans by scintigraphy. A long
half-life positron-emitting radiolabel to serve the same purpose
using positron emission tomography (PET) has long
been sought. We aimed to develop an 89Zr PET tracer for cell
labelling and compare it with [111In]oxinate3 single photon
emission computed tomography (SPECT).
Methods [89Zr]Oxinate4 was synthesised and its uptake and
efflux were measured in vitro in three cell lines and in human
leukocytes. The in vivo biodistribution of eGFP-5T33 murine
myeloma cells labelled using [89Zr]oxinate4 or [111In]oxinate3
was monitored for up to 14 days. 89Zr retention by living
radiolabelled eGFP-positive cells in vivo was monitored by
FACS sorting of liver, spleen and bone marrow cells followed
by gamma counting.
Results Zr labelling was effective in all cell types with yields
comparable with 111In labelling. Retention of 89Zr in cells
in vitro after 24 h was significantly better (range 71 to
>90 %) than 111In (43â52 %). eGFP-5T33 cells in vivo
showed the same early biodistribution whether labelled with
111In or 89Zr (initial pulmonary accumulation followed by
migration to liver, spleen and bone marrow), but later translocation
of radioactivity to kidneys was much greater for 111In.
In liver, spleen and bone marrow at least 92 % of 89Zr
remained associated with eGFP-positive cells after 7 days
in vivo.
Conclusion [89Zr]Oxinate4 offers a potential solution to the
emerging need for a long half-life PET tracer for cell tracking
in vivo and deserves further evaluation of its effects on survival
and behaviour of different cell types
Locomotor adaptation to a powered ankle-foot orthosis depends on control method
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We studied human locomotor adaptation to powered ankle-foot orthoses with the intent of identifying differences between two different orthosis control methods. The first orthosis control method used a footswitch to provide bang-bang control (a kinematic control) and the second orthosis control method used a proportional myoelectric signal from the soleus (a physiological control). Both controllers activated an artificial pneumatic muscle providing plantar flexion torque.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Subjects walked on a treadmill for two thirty-minute sessions spaced three days apart under either footswitch control (n = 6) or myoelectric control (n = 6). We recorded lower limb electromyography (EMG), joint kinematics, and orthosis kinetics. We compared stance phase EMG amplitudes, correlation of joint angle patterns, and mechanical work performed by the powered orthosis between the two controllers over time.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>During steady state at the end of the second session, subjects using proportional myoelectric control had much lower soleus and gastrocnemius activation than the subjects using footswitch control. The substantial decrease in triceps surae recruitment allowed the proportional myoelectric control subjects to walk with ankle kinematics close to normal and reduce negative work performed by the orthosis. The footswitch control subjects walked with substantially perturbed ankle kinematics and performed more negative work with the orthosis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results provide evidence that the choice of orthosis control method can greatly alter how humans adapt to powered orthosis assistance during walking. Specifically, proportional myoelectric control results in larger reductions in muscle activation and gait kinematics more similar to normal compared to footswitch control.</p
Leader Behaviors as Mediators of the Leader Characteristics - Follower Satisfaction Relationship

Drawing upon recent work integrating trait, situational, and behavioral theories of leadership effectiveness, we hypothesized and tested a model specifying that the interactive effects of leader position power and leader political skill on follower satisfaction would be mediated by followersâ perceptions of leadersâ initiating structure and consideration behaviors. Specifically, this model indicates that leaders who are both in powerful positions and politically skilled are perceived to initiate more structure and demonstrate more consideration for their followers than their nonpolitically skilled counterparts, which, in turn, positively impacts followersâ satisfaction (i.e., an indication of subjective leadership effectiveness). Utilizing 190 leaders and 476 followers, we found support for the hypothesized model. Contributions to various literatures, strengths, limitations, and practical implications are discussed

It argues that Western expectations of a link between scientific practices, and civic epistemologies linked to democratic decision-making, are replaced by a rather different future orientation to scientific experimentation, economic investment and social development in Singapore

Misleading signposts along the de Broglie-Bohm road to quantum mechanics
Eighty years after de Broglie's, and a little more than half a century after
Bohm's seminal papers, the de Broglie--Bohm theory (a.k.a. Bohmian mechanics),
which is presumably the simplest theory which explains the orthodox quantum
mechanics formalism, has reached an exemplary state of conceptual clarity and
mathematical integrity. No other theory of quantum mechanics comes even close.
Yet anyone curious enough to walk this road to quantum mechanics is soon being
confused by many misleading signposts that have been put up, and not just by
its detractors, but unfortunately enough also by some of its proponents.

Species of Bursaphelenchus Fuchs, 1937 (Nematoda: Parasitaphelenchidae) and other nematode genera associated with insects from Pinus pinaster in Portugal
Insects associated with maritime pine, Pinus pinaster, in Portugal were collected
and screened for the presence of Bursaphelenchus species. Nematodes were
identified using Internal Transcribed Spacers-Restriction Fragment Length
Polymorphism (ITS-RFLP) analysis of dauer juveniles and morphological
identification of adults that developed from dauer juveniles on fungal cultures
or on cultures in pine wood segments at 26 C. Several associations are
described: Bursaphelenchus teratospicularis and Bursaphelenchus sexdentati are
associated with Orthotomicus erosus; Bursaphelenchus tusciae, B. sexdentati and/or
Bursaphelenchus pinophilus with Hylurgus ligniperda and Bursaphelenchus hellenicus
with Tomicus piniperda, Ips sexdentatus and H. ligniperda. An unidentified
Bursaphelenchus species is vectored by Hylobius sp. The previously reported
association of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus with Monochamus galloprovincialis
was confirmed. The association of Bursaphelenchus leoni with Pityogenes sp. is
not definitively established and needs further studies for clarification.
Other nematode genera besides Bursaphelenchus were found to be associated
with the insects sampled, including two different species of Ektaphelenchus, Parasitorhabditis
sp., Parasitaphelenchus sp., Contortylenchus sp. and other unidentified
nematodes. The Ektaphelenchus species found in O. erosus is morphologically
similar to B. teratospicularis found in the same insect; adults of both the species
are found in cocoon-like structures under the elytra of the insects.
Introduction
Approximately one third of the nematodes belonging to
the order Aphelenchida Siddiqi, 1980 are associated with
insects (Poinar, 1983). These nematodes establish a variety
of associations with the insects, which may be
described as commensalism, e.g. phoresy (to the benefit
of the nematode but not affecting the insect), mutualism
(both the organisms benefit) or parasitism (nematodes
benefit at the expense of the insect) (Giblin-Davis,
2004).
