European Cooperation on Forage Genetic Resources
European cooperation on forage genetic resources is coordinated within the framework of ECP/GR. Today 20 specific European forage databases are maintained by different institutions. The databases hold passport data and, to some extent, characterisation data for a total of 43993 accessions maintained in collections throughout Europe. A European Core Collection is has been established in Lolium perenne and is currently under evaluation at 19 sites
Compositional analysis of InAs-GaAs-GaSb heterostructures by low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy
As an alternative to Core-Loss Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, Low-Loss EELS is suitable for compositional analysis of complex heterostructures, such as the InAs-GaAs-GaSb system, since in this energy range the edges corresponding to these elements are better defined than in Core-Loss. Furthermore, the analysis of the bulk plasmon peak, which is present in this energy range, also provides information about the composition. In this work, compositional information in an InAs-GaAs-GaSb heterostructure has been obtained from Low-Loss EEL spectra
An Adaptive Sampling Scheme to Efficiently Train Fully Convolutional Networks for Semantic Segmentation
Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown excellent performance in
object recognition tasks and dense classification problems such as semantic
segmentation. However, training deep neural networks on large and sparse
datasets is still challenging and can require large amounts of computation and
memory. In this work, we address the task of performing semantic segmentation
on large data sets, such as three-dimensional medical images. We propose an
adaptive sampling scheme that uses a-posterior error maps, generated throughout
training, to focus sampling on difficult regions, resulting in improved
learning. Our contribution is threefold: 1) We give a detailed description of
the proposed sampling algorithm to speed up and improve learning performance on
large images. We propose a deep dual path CNN that captures information at fine
and coarse scales, resulting in a network with a large field of view and high
resolution outputs. We show that our method is able to attain new
state-of-the-art results on the VISCERAL Anatomy benchmark
The iridium double perovskite Sr2YIrO6 revisited: A combined structural and specific heat study
Recently, the iridate double perovskite SrYIrO has attracted
considerable attention due to the report of unexpected magnetism in this
Ir (5d) material, in which according to the J model, a
non-magnetic ground state is expected. However, in recent works on
polycrystalline samples of the series BaSrYIrO no indication of
magnetic transitions have been found. We present a structural, magnetic and
thermodynamic characterization of SrYIrO single crystals, with emphasis
on the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat. Here, we
demonstrate the clue role of single crystal X-ray diffraction on the structural
characterization of the SrYIrO double perovskite crystals by reporting
the detection of a supercell, where ,
and are the unit cell dimensions of the reported monoclinic subcell. In
agreement with the expected non-magnetic ground state of Ir (5d) in
SrYIrO, no magnetic transition is observed down to 430~mK. Moreover,
our results suggest that the low temperature anomaly observed in the specific
heat is not related to the onset of long-range magnetic order. Instead, it is
identified as a Schottky anomaly caused by paramagnetic impurities present in
the sample, of the order of \%. These impurities lead to
non-negligible spin correlations, which nonetheless, are not associated with
long-range magnetic ordering.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure
Circle talks as situated experiential learning: Context, identity, and knowledgeability in \u27learning from reflection\u27
This article presents research that used ethnographic and sociolinguistic methods to study ways participants learn through reflection when carried out as a “circle talk.” The data indicate that participants in the event (a) invoked different contextual frames that (b) implicated them in various identity positions, which (c) affected how they could express their knowledge. These features worked together to generate socially shared meanings that enabled participants to jointly achieve conceptualization—the ideational role “reflection” is presumed to play in the experiential learning process. The analysis supports the claim that participants generate new knowledge in reflection, but challenges individualistic and cognitive assumptions regarding how this occurs. The article builds on situated views of experiential learning by showing how knowledge can be understood as socially shared and how learning and identity formation are mutually entailing processes
Cutaneous larva migrans with optic disc edema: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

A rare case of optic disc edema associated with cutaneous larva migrans is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this has not been previously reported in literature. Joint management by ophthalmology and tropical medicine teams proved most beneficial for our patient, facilitating correct diagnosis, appropriate investigations and instigation of suitable treatment.

Case presentation

A 45-year-old Caucasian man, a naturalist, from the UK developed cutaneous larva migrans while in Kenya and presented to us with visual disturbance secondary to unilateral optic disc edema. This resolved after receiving a single dose of ivermectin and visual acuity reverted to normal.

Conclusion

To the best of our knowledge, optic disc edema associated with cutaneous larva migrans has not been previously reported. This case highlights the importance of taking relevant history of recent travel to endemic areas affected by the nematodes in patients presenting with optic disc edema, and pertinent questioning regarding non-ocular symptoms, including skin lesions. In this case, a history of recent foreign travel and treatment for skin lesions was crucial.</p
