Comparison of embedded and added motor imagery training in patients after stroke: Results of a randomised controlled pilot trial

Two MI integration strategies exist: added and embedded MI. Both approaches were compared when learning a complex motor task (MT): âGoing down, laying on the floor, and getting up againâ. Methods: Outpatients after first stroke participated in a single-blinded, randomised controlled trial with MI embedded into physiotherapy (EG1), MI added to physiotherapy (EG2), and a control group (CG). All groups participated in six physiotherapy sessions. Primary study outcome was time (sec) to perform the motor task at pre and post-intervention. Secondary outcomes: level of help needed, stages of MT-completion, independence, balance, fear of falling (FOF), MI ability. Data were collected four times: twice during one week baseline phase (BL, T0), following the two week intervention (T1), after a two week follow-up (FU). Analysis of variance was performed. Results: Thirty nine outpatients were included (12 females, age: 63.4 ± 10 years; time since stroke: 3.5 ± 2 years; 29 with an ischemic event). All were able to complete the motor task using the standardised 7-step procedure and reduced FOF at T0, T1, and FU. Times to perform the MT at baseline were 44.2 ± 22s, 64.6 ± 50s, and 118.3 ± 93s for EG1 (N = 13), EG2 (N = 12), and CG (N = 14). All groups showed significant improvement in time to complete the MT (p < 0.001) and degree of help needed to perform the task: minimal assistance to supervision (CG) and independent performance (EG1+2). No between group differences were found. Only EG1 demonstrated changes in MI ability over time with the visual indicator increasing from T0 to T1 and decreasing from T1 to FU. The kinaesthetic indicator increased from T1 to FU. Patients indicated to value the MI training and continued using MI for other difficult-to-perform tasks. Conclusions: Embedded or added MI training combined with physiotherapy seem to be feasible and benefi-cial to learn the MT with emphasis on getting up independently. Based on their baseline level CG had the highest potential to improve outcomes. A patient study with 35 patients per group could give a conclusive answer of a superior MI integration strategy.The research project was partially funded by the Gottfried und Julia Bangerter-Rhyner Foundation
Quark matter in compact stars?
Ozel, in a recent reanalysis of EXO 0748-676 observational data
(astro-ph/0605106), concluded that quark matter probably does not exist in the
center of compact stars. We show that the data is actually consistent with the

Monthly average daily global and diffuse solar radiation based on sunshine duration and clearness index for Brasov, Romania
The main objective of this study is to develop single location appropriate models for the estimation of the monthly average daily global and diffuse horizontal solar radiation for Brasov, Romania. The study focuses particularly on models based on the sunshine duration and clearness index. The data used for the calibration of the models were collected during a period of 4 yr, between November 2008 and October 2012, at the Transilvania University of Brasov. The testing and validation of the models was carried out using data from the online SoDa database for Brasov for the year 2005. Different statistical error tests were applied to evaluate the accuracy of the models. The predicted values are also compared with values from three other known models concerning the global and diffuse solar radiation. A new mixed model was developed for the estimation of monthly average daily global horizontal solar radiation. The data processing was performed by means of a real-time interface developed with LabVIEW graphical programming language. The parameters taken into account were the relative sunshine, the clearness index, the extraterrestrial radiation, the latitude and the longitude. The methodology is simple and effective and may be applied for any region. Its effectiveness was proven through comparison with global models
Wikipedia as an encyclopaedia of life
In his 2003 essay E O Wilson outlined his vision for an “encyclopaedia of life” comprising “an electronic page for each species of organism on Earth”, each page containing “the scientific name of the species, a pictorial or genomic presentation of the primary type specimen on which its name is based, and a summary of its diagnostic traits.” Although the “quiet revolution” in biodiversity informatics has generated numerous online resources, including some directly inspired by Wilson's essay (e.g., "http://ispecies.org":http://ispecies.org, "http://www.eol.org":http://www.eol.org), we are still some way from the goal of having available online all relevant information about a species, such as its taxonomy, evolutionary history, genomics, morphology, ecology, and behaviour. While the biodiversity community has been developing a plethora of databases, some with overlapping goals and duplicated content, Wikipedia has been slowly growing to the point where it now has over 100,000 pages on biological taxa. My goal in this essay is to explore the idea that, largely independent of the efforts of biodiversity informatics and well-funded international efforts, Wikipedia ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) has emerged as potentially the best platform for fulfilling E O Wilson’s vision
Suppression of core polarization in halo nuclei
We present a microscopic study of halo nuclei, starting from the Paris and
Bonn potentials and employing a two-frequency shell model approach. It is found
that the core-polarization effect is dramatically suppressed in such nuclei.
Consequently the effective interaction for halo nucleons is almost entirely
given by the bare G-matrix alone, which presently can be evaluated with a high
degree of accuracy. The experimental pairing energies between the two halo
neutrons in He and Li nuclei are satisfactorily reproduced by our
calculation. It is suggested that the fundamental nucleon-nucleon interaction
can be probed in a clearer and more direct way in halo nuclei than in ordinary

Quantum Mechanics, Common Sense and the Black Hole Information Paradox
The purpose of this paper is to analyse, in the light of information theory
and with the arsenal of (elementary) quantum mechanics (EPR correlations,
copying machines, teleportation, mixing produced in sub-systems owing to a
trace operation, etc.) the scenarios available on the market to resolve the
so-called black-hole information paradox. We shall conclude that the only
plausible ones are those where either the unitary evolution of quantum
mechanics is given up, in which information leaks continuously in the course of
black-hole evaporation through non-local processes, or those in which the world

Transient Observers and Variable Constants, or Repelling the Invasion of the Boltzmann's Brains
If the universe expands exponentially without end, ``ordinary observers''
like ourselves may be vastly outnumbered by ``Boltzmann's brains,'' transient
observers who briefly flicker into existence as a result of quantum or thermal
fluctuations. One might then wonder why we are so atypical. I show that tiny
changes in physics--for instance, extremely slow variations of fundamental
constants--can drastically change this result, and argue that one should be
wary of conclusions that rely on exact knowledge of the laws of physics in the

1-2-3-flavor color superconductivity in compact stars
We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially
deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter, e.g.,
as in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model
of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the spin-1 single
flavor (CSL) and spin-0 two/three flavor (2SC/CFL) channels, and a
Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach in the nuclear matter sector. We
find that nucleon dissociation sets in at about the saturation density, n_0,
when the down-quark Fermi sea is populated (d-quark dripline) due to the flavor
asymmetry imposed by beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. At about 3n_0
u-quarks appear forming a two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase, while
the s-quark Fermi sea is populated only at still higher baryon density. The
hybrid star sequence has a maximum mass of 2.1 M_sun. Two- and three-flavor
quark matter phases are found only in gravitationally unstable hybrid star
