    Surface Morphology and Electrical Resistivity in Polycrystalline Au/Cu/Si(100) System

    This work describes the analysis of morphology and electrical resistivity (ρ) obtained in the Au/Cu/Si system. The Au/Cu bilayers were deposited by thermal evaporation technique with thicknesses from 50 to 250 nm on SiOx/Si(100) substrates. The Au : Cu concentration ratio of the samples was of 25 : 75 at%. The bilayers were annealed into a vacuum oven with argon atmosphere at 660 K for one hour. The crystalline structures of AuCu and CuSi alloys were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to study the morphology, final thickness, and the atomic concentration of the alloys formed, respectively. The four-point probe technique was used to measure the electrical resistivity (ρ) in the prepared alloys as a function of thickness. The ρ value was measured and it was numerically compared with the Fuchs–Sondheimer (FS) and the Mayadas–Shatzkes (MS) models of resistivity. Results show values of electrical resistivity between 0.9 and 1.9 μΩ-cm. These values are four times smaller than the values of the AuCu systems reported in literature

    First report on dung beetles in intra-Amazonian savannahs in Roraima, Brazil

    This is the first study to address the dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) diversity in intra-Amazonian savannahs in the state of Roraima, Brazil. Our aim was to survey the dung beetle fauna associated with these savannahs (regionally called 'lavrado'), since little is known about the dung beetles from this environment. We conducted three field samples using pitfall traps baited with human dung in savannah areas near the city of Boa Vista during the rainy seasons of 1996, 1997, and 2008. We collected 383 individuals from ten species, wherein six have no previous record in intra-Amazonian savannahs. The most abundant species were Ontherus appendiculatus (Mannerheim, 1829), Canthidium aff. humerale (Germar, 1813), Dichotomius nisus (Olivier, 1789), and Pseudocanthon aff. xanthurus (Blanchard, 1846). We believe that knowing the dung beetles diversity associated with the intra-Amazonian savannahs is ideal for understanding the occurrence and distribution of these organisms in a highly threatened environment, it thus being the first step towards conservation strategy development

    Los tricópteros son considerados un componente biótico importante y diverso de los ecosistemas acuáticos continentales. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la comunidad del orden Trichoptera en dos microcuencas con diferente grado de perturbación. Se realizaron cuatro campañas de muestreo en dos microcuencas de la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes colombianos. Se realizaron análisis mediante curvas de rarefacción, el índice de Bray Curtis y partición de la diversidad, usando como medidas la riqueza y la diversidad de Shannon. Se encontró que, aunque la riqueza fue similar entre las dos microcuencas, la abundancia siempre fue mayor en los arroyos de la microcuenca conservada. En cada microcuenca dominaron géneros diferentes, exceptoOchrotrichia que fue abundante en todos los sitios. La diversidad alfa entre los arroyos de la microcuenca conservada fue similar, mientras que en la perturbada se observó una reducción de la diversidad asociada a un gradiente de perturbación de los arroyos. La diversidad beta (0Db y 1Db ) entre microcuencas y entre arroyos conservados fue similar, mientras que en los perturbados también mostró un gradiente similar al de la diversidad alfa. El análisis de similitud agrupó los arroyos según su estado de conservación. Las diferencias encontradas en los atributos de los comunidades de tricópteros confirman que su uso es adecuado para conocer el estado de conservación de los sistemas que habita.Trichopterans are considered an important and diverse biotic element in continental aquatic ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the assemblages of the order Trichoptera in two subwatersheds with a gradient of disturbance. Four sampling events were conducted in two subwatersheds in the Eastern Mountain Range of the Colombian Andes. For the analysis we used rarefaction curves, Bray-Curtis’ Index and Partitioning Diversity and total richness and Shannon’s diversity as metrics. Although total richness was similar between both subwatersheds, abundance was always highest in streams within the conserved subwatershed. Each subwatershed was dominated by different genera, except Ochrotrichia, which was abundant at all sites. Alpha diversity was similar among streams in the conserved watershed, while a reduction in diversity potentially associated with the disturbance gradient was observed in streams of the disturbed subwatershed. Beta diversity (0Db and 1Db) between subwatersheds and among conserved streams was similar, while in disturbed streams a similar gradient to that of alpha diversity was found. The similitude analysis clustered streams according to their conservation status. Differences found in trichopteran assemblages do confirm that the use of their attributes is adequate to assess the conservation status of stream ecosystems. Rev. Biol. Trop. 62 (Suppl. 2): 97-110.     Cinética de formación del Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> en capas de aluminio estudiada mediante mediciones eléctricas

    In this work a simple method for monitoring the low temperature oxidation of aluminum thin films, which is based on measurements of electrical resistance using the four-probe technique, is proposed. Kinetic growth data of the aluminum oxide layer, obtained using different values of applied current on as-deposited metallic films is presented. The temperature gradient measured on the films were 2 °C and 9 °C when the corresponding applied currents were 0.1A and 0.2 A. The obtained data show a good agreement with the Cabrera-Mott`s model for low temperature oxidation of metals. From kinetic curves, values of the energy barrier (U) and of the electrostatic potential (V) were obtained, which are reasonable with the values reported in the literature. The sample with a larger current applied, exhibited a higher oxidation rate due to a thermal effect and by the larger electrostatic potential established across the oxide layer. This simple method can be interesting to monitoring and controlling the oxidation process.<br><br>En este trabajo se propone un método sencillo para el seguimiento del proceso de oxidación de capas delgadas de aluminio, basado en mediciones de la resistencia eléctrica usando la técnica de cuatro puntas en línea. Se presentan datos de cinética de crecimiento de la capa de óxido de aluminio para dos muestras recién depositadas a las que se aplicaron valores distintos de corriente. Los cambios de temperatura medidos fueron de 2 °C y 9 °C para corrientes aplicadas de 0.1 A y 0.2 A. Los datos muestran buen acuerdo con el modelo de Cabrera-Mott para oxidación de metales en baja temperatura. A partir de las curvas de crecimiento se obtuvieron valores de la barrera de energía (U) y del potencial electrostático (V), razonables con los reportados en la literatura. La muestra con mayor corriente aplicada se oxidó más rápido debido al efecto térmico ya que se estableció un mayor potencial electrostático a través de la capa de óxido. Este sencillo método de análisis puede ser de gran interés para el control del proceso de oxidación en metales

    Fish handling and ultrasound procedures for viewing the ovary of submersed, nonanesthetized, unrestrained channel catfish

    This study addressed the development of rapid, straightforward, and minimally stressful procedures for the ultrasound imaging of ovaries of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus in a commercial hatchery setting. The objectives were to (1) describe the ultrasound imaging equipment and settings used, (2) describe the fish handling procedures during imaging, and (3) illustrate image orientation with respect to the physical positioning of the probe and the catfish. Ultrasound images of the ovaries of channel catfish were recorded as digital video recordings (audio video interleave format) and as still images (ultrasound image format files). This study integrated the use of nonanesthetized, submersed fish within a recirculating tank system or portable container and a submersed waterproof probe, which enabled us to use water as a transmission medium for ultrasound. This allowed us to image the fish in ventral recumbency (upright swimming position) without using a physical restraint in the tank system, or by positioning the fish in the portable container by adjusting the position of its caudal peduncle with one hand and that of the probe with the other hand. The ease of using this technique allows it to be employed as a systematic method for fish handling under laboratory and hatchery conditions. The detailed ultrasound imaging procedures and instrument control settings reported can be used in future testing, improvement, and standardization of procedures for viewing ovaries in channel catfish and potentially other species
