Observations of cosmic gamma-ray bursts with IMP-7: Evidence for a single spectrum
Spectral observation of nine recent cosmic gamma-ray bursts are reported. The average photon number spectra of all nine events are shown to be consistent with a 150-keV exponential from 100 keV to about 400 keV, and a power law of index -2.5 from 400 keV to 1100 keV. The observations also indicate an event rate of 16 in 1972 and 1973, or 8 + or - 2 per year, higher than the 5 + or - 1 per year initially reported. This corresponds to an approximately 40-percent lower effective intensity threshold, attained by using more sensitive detectors in multiple-satellite coincidence

Guest Editor's Preface: International Conference on the Frontiers of Plasma Physics and Technology
The first International Conference on the Frontiers of Plasma Physics
and Technology was organized in Bangalore, India during December
9–14, 2002. More than 100 delegates from all the continents
participated in the conference and about half the delegates were from
overseas. This Forum specially encouraged the young researchers to
present their work and exchange ideas with experts. This conference
which was inter-disciplinary in nature, brought several plasma
physicists and technologists to a common platform to discuss the
research and applications useful for the advancement of the present
society
High power laser interaction with clusters
Response of clusters to laser radiation depends on the
laser parameters like wavelength, pulse duration, field,
and so forth. At moderate laser intensities, I ∼
1012 W/cm2, using a laser beam of
wavelength 1.06 μm and 10-ns pulse duration, we have studied
X-ray emission spectra from aluminum clusters of diameter
0.4 μm and gold clusters of 1.25 μm. Aluminum clusters
show a different spectra compared to bulk material whereas
gold clusters evolve towards bulk gold. Results are analyzed
on the basis of cluster dimension, laser wavelength, and pulse
duration. At higher laser intensities ≥1018
W/cm2, clusters undergo Coulomb explosion, giving
rise to energetic electrons and ions. Here we discuss the
possibility of harnessing these energetic particles for
heating a small volume of the precompressed DT fuel to
ignition condition relevant to fast ignition. Preliminary
results are discussed

The Goddard program of gamma ray transient astronomy
Gamma ray burst studies are reviewed. The past results, present status and future expectations are outlined regarding endeavors using experiments on balloons, IMP-6 and -7, OGO-3, ISEE-1 and -3, Helios-2, Solar Maximum Mission, the Einstein Observatory, Solar Polar and the Gamma Ray Observatory, and with the interplanetary gamma ray burst networks, to which some of these spacecraft sensors contribute. Additional emphasis is given to the recent discovery of a new type of gamma ray transient, detected on 1979 March 5
