    Structural Determinants of the Natural Rate of Unemployment in Canada

    This paper presents empirical estimates of the policy and structural determinants of the natural rate of unemployment in Canada. The paper begins with a discussion of structural features of the economy which impinge on the adjustment of real wages to their equilibrium level. Estimates are presented showing how the generosity of the unemployment insurance system is related to past levels of unemployment. The empirical results indicate that government policies have been largely responsible for changes in the natrual rate, and hence can contribute to a reduction in the natural rate in the medium term.Natural rate of unemployment; Canada

    AX J0049.4-7323 - a close look at a neutron star interacting with a circumstellar disk

    Detailed evidence on the system AX J0049.4-7323 is presented here to show how the passage of the neutron star in the binary system disrupts the circumstellar disk of the mass donor Be star. A similar effect is noted in three other Be/X-ray binary systems.     Small boats are increasingly being operated at high speed in rough weather by organisations carrying out essential missions such as the military and rescue services. Crew and passengers on these boats are exposed to continuous vibration and impacts leading to reduced crew effectiveness, fatigue and the possibility of injury. In addition to this marine craft will soon fall under the jurisdiction of the European Union Directive 2002/44/EC on the protection of workers from vibration.To assess the possibility of injury and mitigate it at the design stage of a vessel a design tool is needed to assess the vibration levels on/in the human body while the boat operates in dynamic environments. A review of current human body models is presented and a new human body model, which allows for estimates of muscle activity, is proposed. This model is supplemented by a numerical approach using finite element methods to assess the dynamic response of the integrated human-seat-controller-boat interaction system excited by wave loads or boat motions measured in full scale boat operation tests. The vibration control actuators are arranged between the seat and boat to reduce vibrations transmitted to the human body from the boat to obtain a comfortable ride condition

A means obtains an electrical signal indicative of a pressure measurement from each of the plurality of pressure transducers. A multiplexing means is connected for selectivity supplying inputs from the plurality of pressure transducers to the signal obtaining means. A data bus connects the plurality of pressure transducers to the multiplexing means. A latch circuit is connected to supply control inputs to the multiplexing means. An address bus is connected to supply an address signal of a selected one of the plurality of pressure transducers to the latch circuit. In operation, each of the pressure transducers is successively scanned by the multiplexing means in response to address signals supplied on the address bus to the latch circuit

    Comparison of predicted and experimental performance of large-bore roller bearing operating to 3.0 million DN

    Bearing inner and outer race temperatures and the amount of heat transferred to the lubricant were calculated by using the computer program CYBEAN. The results obtained were compared with previously reported experimental data for a 118 mm bore roller bearing that operated at shaft speeds to 25,500 rpm, radial loads to 8,900 N (2000 lb), and total lubricant flow rates to 0.0102 cu m/min (2.7 gal/min). The calculated results compared well with the experimental data

    North-South R&D Spillovers

    We examine the extent to which developing countries that do little, if any research and development themselves benefit from R&D that is performed in the industrial countries. By trading with an industrial country that has large 'stocks of knowledge' from its cumulative R&D activities, a developing country can boost its productivity by importing a larger variety of intermediate products and capital equipment embodying foreign knowledge, and by acquiring useful information that would otherwise be costly to obtain. Our empirical results, which are based on observations over the 1971-90 period for 77 developing countries, suggest that R&D spillovers from the industrial countries in the North to the developing countries in the South are substantial.
