    Exploration of Alternative Methods of Providing Quality Educational Programs in Five Small Illinois Rural School Districts

    This study explored alternative methods that might be used by five selected small Illinois rural school districts to provide quality educational programs. Many Illinois school districts are facing problems that are unique to today\u27s educational setting. Declining enrollments and decreasing farm land assessments along with small increases in state aid have compounded the problems of school districts. School board members must be aware of the condition of the school districts and what warning signs show impending problems. This study explored the enrollment projections, financial conditions and the instructional setting of five Shelby County Illinois school districts. Then options available to these districts to retain and enhance quality educational programs were explored. Conclusions were made with regard to the condition of these districts. With the information in the study and with careful evaluation, the members of the boards of education of these five school districts should be able to make more informed and appropriate decisions as to the direction each school district should take in the future

    This paper offers a narrative historical description of the German Social Market Economy, from its inception following World War II, up to the recent Agenda 2010 reforms enacted under the administration of Chancellor Gerhard Schroder. It is the purpose of this work to explore why the German Social Market System enjoyed such a high degree of success in its early years, and which flaws might be causing the chronic problems of low growth and high unemployment that have plagued Germany more recently. In particular, the paper argues that a high-cost and highly inflexible labor market resulting from Germany\u27s system of autonomous collective wage bargaining may be stymieing business growth and scaring away foreign investment

    Results of Universal Prenatal Screening for Hepatitis C Infection in a Remote American Indian Primary Care Population

    BACKGROUND: Although chronic liver disease remains a major area of health disparity for American Indian (AI) people, the epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among AI people is poorly documented. Because of suspected high local prevalence, two remote AI clinics in the Northern Plains implemented universal prenatal HCV screening in 2005. When this screening program reported an unexpectedly high prenatal anti-HCV (anti-HCV antibody) positivity rate, we conducted a case-control study to determine risks for infection and opportunities for community intervention. MAIN FINDINGS: The clinics screened a total of 205 pregnant women (median age, 22 years). Of these 205 women, a total of 13 (6.3%; 95% confidence interval, 3.4–10.6) had anti-HCV confirmed. Of the anti-HCV-positive women, 10 (76.9%) were aged 15–24 years. We included 10 cases and 40 anti-HCV-negative prenatal controls in a case-control study. On multivariate analysis, only injection-drug use (IDU) remained associated with HCV seropositivity. CONCLUSIONS: Universal prenatal screening revealed a high prevalence of anti-HCV at these remote AI clinics. This population has not been previously described at being at elevated risk for HCV infection. In order to reduce health disparities, young, rural AI populations seeking prenatal care need to be included in interventions to reduce HCV transmission

    Electrochemical Studies of Fluorenone in Ionic Liquids and Aprotic Solvents

    The electrochemical behavior of 9-fluorenone in acetonitrile / tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEA BF 4 ) solutions has been explored by additions of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIm BF 4 ) and the proton donor 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP). The effect of EMIm BF 4 addition was found to be consistent with complexation of the dianion of 9-fluorenone by the EMIm cation, causing a positive shift of the second reduction process. Addition of HFIP as proton donor, on the other hand, caused the formation of a single reduction process near the first fluorenone reduction process

    Radiation‐Induced Oral Mucositis Hamster Model Using a Linear Accelerator Enhances Clinical Relevance of Preclinical Studies for Treatment Strategy Investigation

    Translational animal models for oral mucositis (OM) are necessary to simulate and assess the bioclinical effects and response in humans. These models should simulate high levels of radiation exposure that leads to oxidative stress and inflammatory‐initiated tissue changes. Hamster models have been extensively studied to observe pathological effects of radiation exposure and help in the development of effective treatments. To successfully evaluate the potential for treatment regimens with consistency and relevance, a radiation‐induced OM hamster model was developed using a clinical linear accelerator utilized by cancer patients daily. The dose exposure to the isolated, everted cheek pouch of a hamster, as well as the progression of injury, pro‐inflammatory marker, histological, and elasticity analyses of the buccal pouch were conducted to verify replicability and reproducibility of the injury model. The findings from this model demonstrated its ability to consistently induce injury and resolution over 28 days using an acute dose of 60 Gy. This model was developed to enhance clinical relevance when evaluating potential efficacious treatments and can now be utilized in efficacy studies to better evaluate developed therapeutics in a preclinical model that is easy to translate to clinical studies

    Evaluation of MetriGenix custom 4D™ arrays applied for detection of breast cancer subtypes

    BACKGROUND: Previously, a total of five breast cancer subtypes have been identified based on variation in gene expression patterns. These expression profiles were also shown to be associated with different prognostic value. In this study tumour samples from 27 breast cancer patients, previously subtyped by expression analysis using DNA microarrays, and four controls from normal breast tissue were included. A new MetriGenix 4D™ array proposed for diagnostic use was evaluated. METHODS: We applied MetriGenix custom 4D™ arrays for the detection of previously defined molecular subtypes of breast cancer. MetriGenix 4D™ arrays have special features including probe immobilization in microchannels with chemiluminescence detection that enable shorter hybridization time. RESULTS: The MetriGenix 4D™ array platform was evaluated with respect to both the accuracy in classifying the samples as well as the performance of the system itself. In a cross validation analysis using "Nearest Shrunken Centroid classifier" and the PAM software, 77% of the samples were classified correctly according to earlier classification results. CONCLUSION: The system shows potential for fast screening; however, improvements are needed

    Climatic and environmental patterns associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Four Corners region, United States.

    To investigate climatic, spatial, temporal, and environmental patterns associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) cases in the Four Corners region, we collected exposure site data for HPS cases that occurred in 1993 to 1995. Cases clustered seasonally and temporally by biome type and geographic location, and exposure sites were most often found in pinyon-juniper woodlands, grasslands, and Great Basin desert scrub lands, at elevations of 1,800 m to 2,500 m. Environmental factors (e.g., the dramatic increase in precipitation associated with the 1992 to 1993 El NiĂąo) may indirectly increase the risk for Sin Nombre virus exposure and therefore may be of value in designing disease prevention campaigns
