Do Repatriation Taxes Matter? Evidence from the Tax Returns of U.S. Multinationals
An open question in the literature on the taxation of multinational corporations is whether repatriation taxes influence whether the profits of foreign subsidiaries are repatriated or reinvested abroad. Theoretical models suggest that dividend remittances should not be influenced by repatriation taxes. The results of recent empirical work indicate that dividend remittances are sensitive to repatriation taxes. This paper investigates whether the empirical evidence can be reconciled with the theoretical results by recognizing that repatriation taxes on dividends may vary over time and provide firms with an incentive to time repatriations so that they occur in years when repatriation tax rates are relatively low. We use information about cross-country differences in tax rates to separately estimate the influence of permanent tax changes, as would occur due to changes in statutory tax rates, and transitory tax changes on dividend repatriations. Our data contains U.S. tax return information for a large sample of U.S. corporations and their foreign subsidiaries. We find that the permanent tax price effect is significantly different from the transitory price effect and is not significantly different from zero, while the transitory tax price effect is negative and significant. This suggests that repatriation taxes do affect dividend repatriation behavior but only to the extent that they vary over time. Previous empirical work has apparently measured the effect of timing behavior.

Feasibility and initial efficacy of project-based treatment for people with ABI
Background: Communication impairments are common and pervasive for people a long time following acquired brain injury (ABI). These impairments have a significant impact on a person's quality of life (QOL) postâinjury. Projectâbased treatment is a treatment approach that could have an impact on communication skills and QOL for people with ABI a longâterm postâinjury. This treatment is embedded in a context of meaningful activities chosen by people with ABI, whereby, as a group, they work collaboratively to achieve a tangible end product.
Aims: To evaluate the feasibility and initial efficacy of projectâbased treatment on improving the communication skills and QOL for people with ABI.
Methods & Procedures: An exploratory controlled trial with alternate allocation of groups, and followâup at 6â8 weeks, was completed. Twentyâone people with chronic ABI were recruited in groups of two to three from community settings, allocated to either a TREATMENT (n = 11) or WAITLIST group (n = 10). Participants attended a 20âh groupâbased treatment over 6 weeks where they worked towards achieving a project that helped others. To determine feasibility, four criteria were used: demand, implementation, practicality and acceptability. A range of communication and QOL outcomes was used to determine a fifth feasibility criterion, initial efficacy. Some of these criteria were additionally used to evaluate the feasibility of the outcomes.
Outcomes & Results: All participants received the treatment as allocated with high attendance and no dropouts. The treatment was feasible to deliver as intended and was highly acceptable to participants. Medium and large effect sizes were found from preâ to postâtreatment, and from preâtreatment to followâup for measures of conversation, perceived communicative ability and QOL.
Conclusions & Implications: Projectâbased treatment is feasible with indications of initial efficacy for both communication skills and QOL. The treatment provides a promising new approach for improving communication skills and QOL in people with chronic acquired brain injuries in the community setting
Expression of factor V by resident macrophages boosts host defense in the peritoneal cavity
Macrophages resident in different organs express distinct genes, but understanding how this diversity fits into tissue-specific features is limited. Here, we show that selective expression of coagulation factor V (FV) by resident peritoneal macrophages in mice promotes bacterial clearance in the peritoneal cavity and serves to facilitate the well-known but poorly understood macrophage disappearance reaction. Intravital imaging revealed that resident macrophages were nonadherent in peritoneal fluid during homeostasis. Bacterial entry into the peritoneum acutely induced macrophage adherence and associated bacterial phagocytosis. However, optimal control of bacterial expansion in the peritoneum also required expression of FV by the macrophages to form local clots that effectively brought macrophages and bacteria in proximity and out of the fluid phase. Thus, acute cellular adhesion and resident macrophage-induced coagulation operate independently and cooperatively to meet the challenges of a unique, open tissue environment. These events collectively account for the macrophage disappearance reaction in the peritoneal cavity
Mapping susceptibility loci for alcohol consumption using number of grams of alcohol consumed per day as a phenotype measure
BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence for a significant genetic component to the risk for alcoholism. However, susceptibility loci or genes for alcohol dependence remain largely unknown. To identify susceptibility loci for alcohol dependence, we selected 329 extended families from the Framingham Heart Study population in which at least one family member reported alcohol consumption during the interview in 1970â1971, and performed genome-wide linkage analyses using various analytical methods. RESULTS: Multi-point sib-pair regression analysis using the SIBPAL program of S.A.G.E. provided strong evidence for linkage of alcohol dependence to chromosomes 9 (p-value < 0.0001) and weak evidence to chromosomes 15 and 16 (p-value < 0.005). To confirm these findings, we re-analyzed the same data set by various methods implemented in GENEHUNTER and found that only one region was significant with a LOD score > 2.0 by the variance-component method. This region is located on chromosome 9 between markers GATA21F05 and GATA81C04. CONCLUSION: Analyses of the Framingham Heart Study population provided evidence of genetic susceptibility loci for alcohol dependence on chromosomes 9, 15, and 16. The genomic region identified on chromosome 9 was particularly interesting because the region has also been previously reported to be linked to alcohol dependence in the American Indian population by another group
Association between length of storage of red blood cell units and outcome of critically ill children: a prospective observational study
INTRODUCTION: Transfusion is a common treatment in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs). Studies in adults suggest that prolonged storage of red blood cell units is associated with worse clinical outcome. No prospective study has been conducted in children. Our objectives were to assess the clinical impact of the length of storage of red blood cell units on clinical outcome of critically ill children.
METHODS: Prospective, observational study conducted in 30 North American centers, in consecutive patients aged \u3c18 years with a stay\u3eor= 48 hours in a PICU. The primary outcome measure was the incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome after transfusion. The secondary outcomes were 28-day mortality and PICU length of stay. Odds ratios were adjusted for gender, age, number of organ dysfunctions at admission, total number of transfusions, and total dose of transfusion, using a multiple logistic regression model.
RESULTS: The median length of storage was 14 days in 296 patients with documented length of storage. For patients receiving blood stored \u3eor= 14 days, the adjusted odds ratio for an increased incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome was 1.87 (95% CI 1.04;3.27, P = 0.03). There was also a significant difference in the total PICU length of stay (adjusted median difference +3.7 days, P \u3c 0.001) and no significant change in mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: In critically ill children, transfusion of red blood cell units stored for \u3eor= 14 days is independently associated with an increased occurrence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and prolonged PICU stay
Inelastic X-ray scattering study of the collective dynamics in liquid sodium
Inelastic X-ray scattering data have been collected for liquid sodium at
T=390 K, i.e. slightly above the melting point. Owing to the very high
instrumental resolution, pushed up to 1.5 meV, it has been possible to
determine accurately the dynamic structure factor, , in a wide
wavevector range, nm, and to investigate on the dynamical
processes underlying the collective dynamics. A detailed analysis of the
lineshape of , similarly to other liquid metals, reveals the
co-existence of two different relaxation processes with slow and fast
characteristic timescales respectively. The present data lead to the conclusion
that: i) the picture of the relaxation mechanism based on a simple viscoelastic
model fails; ii) although the comparison with other liquid metals reveals
similar behavior, the data do not exhibit an exact scaling law as the principle

Measuring cognition and function in the preclinical stage of Alzheimer\u27s disease
© 2018 The Authors The Alzheimer\u27s Association\u27s Research Roundtable met in November 2016 to explore how best to measure changes in cognition and function in the preclinical stage of Alzheimer\u27s disease. This review will cover the tools and instruments currently available to identify populations for prevention trials, and measure subtle disease progression in the earliest stages of Alzheimer\u27s disease, and will include discussions of suitable cognitive, behavioral, functional, composite, and biological endpoints for prevention trials. Current prevention trials are reviewed including TOMMOROW, Alzheimer\u27s Prevention Initiative Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer\u27s Disease Trial, the Alzheimer\u27s Prevention Initiative Generation Study, and the Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer\u27s to compare current approaches and tools that are being developed
