    Three-reflection halfwave and quarterwave retarders using dielectric-coated metallic mirrors

    A design procedure is described to determine the thicknesses of single-layer coatings of a given dielectric on a given metallic substrate so that a specified net phase retardance (and/or a net relative amplitude attenuation) between the p and s polarizations is achieved after three reflections from a symmetrical arrangement of three mirrors that maintain collinearity of the input and output beams. Examples are presented of halfwave and quarterwave retarders (HWR and QWR) that use a ZnS-Ag film-substrate system at the CO2-laser wavelength λ = 10.6 µm. The equal net reflectances for the p and s polarizations are computed and found to be high (above 90%) for most designs. Sensitivity of the designs (deviation of the magnitude and phase of the ratio of net complex p and s reflection coefficients from design specifications) to small film thickness and angle-of-incidence errors is examined, and useful operation over a small wavelength range (10–11 µm) is demonstrated

    Pseudo-Brewster and second-Brewster angles of an absorbing substrate coated by a transparent thin film

    The pseudo-Brewster angle of minimum reflectance for the p polarization, the corresponding angle for thes polarization, and the second-Brewster angle of minimum ratio of the p and s reflectances are all determined as functions of the thickness of a transparent film coating an absorbing substrate by numerical solution of the exact equations that govern such angles of the form Re(Z′/Z) = 0, where Z = Rp, Rs, or ρ represent the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients for the p and s polarizations and their ratio (ρ =Rp/Rs), respectively, and Z′ is the angle-of-incidence derivative of Z. Results that show these angles and their associated reflectance and reflectance-ratio minima are presented for the SiO2-Si film-sibstrate system at wavelength λ = 0.6328 µm and film thickness of up to four periods (≃1.2 µm). Applications of these results are proposed in film-thickness measurement and control

    A transparent or absorbing substrate can be coated with a transparent thin film to produce a linear reflectanceversus- angle-of-incidence response over a certain range of angles. Linearization at and near normal incidence is a special case that leads to a maximally flat response for p-polarized, s-polarized, or unpolarized light. For midrange and high-range linearization with moderate and high slopes, respectively, the best results are obtained when the incident light is s polarized. Application to a Si substrate that is coated with a SiO2 film leads to novel passive and active reflection rotation sensors. Experimental results and an error analysis of this rotation sensor are presented

    The causal relationship between SME sustainability and banks’ risk

    This study aims to examine the influence of banks’ credit to SMEs on non-performing loans. Many studies find that access to financial sources has become an obstacle to the growth and sustainability of SMEs. This study uses theoretical and empirical approaches to support the study’s hypothesis. Data are presented for 15 banks in Palestine, covering the period 2006 to 2016.The study uses empirical techniques regarding to examine the relationship between the variables. Evidence shows that encouraging banks to lend more money to SMEs through the use of a guarantee fund could decrease their risk. Thus, enhancing credit to SMEs could improve the growth and sustainability of these firms. The study recommending policymakers and bank’s managers could develop their strategies according to SME’s needing. Therefore, enhancing the growth in these firms and reducing the bank’s risk. Furthermore, adopting the guarantee funds in developing countries could decrease the bank’s risk, thus lending more to SME. The value of this paper comes from the importance of SME in the economic growth and development sustainability. Therefore, there is a need to convince banks to enhance SME credit through a guarantee fund and that extending this type of credit would positively influence banks’activities

    Optical Study of the Free Carrier Response of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 Superlattices

    We used infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry to investigate the electronic properties of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices (SLs). Our results indicated that, independent of the SL periodicity and individual layer-thickness, the SLs exhibited a Drude metallic response with sheet carrier density per interface ~3x10^14 cm^-2. This is probably due to the leakage of d-electrons at interfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the band insulator SrTiO3. We observed a carrier relaxation time ~ 35 fs and mobility ~ 35 cm^2V^-1s^-1 at 10 K, and an unusual temperature dependence of carrier density that was attributed to the dielectric screening of quantum paraelectric SrTiO3.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    N-myc downstream regulated gene-1 participates in carcinogenesis, angiogenesis, metastases, and anticancer drug resistance. In the present study, we analyzed the expression pattern of N-myc downstream regulated gene-1 following treatment of human colonic cancer cell lines; HCT-116 (well differentiated with wild-type p53 gene) and Colo-320 (poorly differentiated with mutant p53 gene), with 3,3′-diindolylmethane, a well-established proapoptotic agent product derived from indole-3-carbinol. Treatment of Colo-320 and HCT-116 with 3,3′-diindolylmethane disclosed inhibition of cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, mediated through apoptosis induction. The increased expression of N-myc downstream regulated gene-1 was detected only in poorly differentiated colon cancer cells, Colo-320 cell line. Our results suggest that N-myc downstream regulated gene-1 expression is enhanced by 3,3′-diindolylmethane in poorly differentiated cells and followed by induction of apoptosis. 3,3′-diindolylmethane induced apoptosis may represent a new regulator of N-myc downstream regulated gene-1 in poorly differentiated colonic cancer cells

    First-principles calculation of the temperature dependence of the optical response of bulk GaAs

    A novel approach has been developed to calculate the temperature dependence of the optical response of a semiconductor. The dielectric function is averaged over several thermally perturbed configurations that are extracted from molecular dynamic simulations. The calculated temperature dependence of the imaginary part of the dielectric function of GaAs is presented in the range from 0 to 700 K. This approach that explicitly takes into account lattice vibrations describes well the observed thermally-induced energy shifts and broadening of the dielectric function.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Spectroscopic distinction between the normal state pseudogap and the superconducting gap of cuprate high T_{c} superconductors

    We report on broad-band infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data provide a detailed account of the spectral weight (SW) redistributions due to the normal state pseudogap (PG) and the superconducting (SC) gap. They show that these phenomena involve different energy scales, exhibit distinct doping dependencies and thus are likely of different origin. In particular, the SW redistribution in the PG state closely resembles the one of a conventional charge- or spin density wave (CDW or SDW) system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Relativistic Operator Description of Photon Polarization

    We present an operator approach to the description of photon polarization, based on Wigner's concept of elementary relativistic systems. The theory of unitary representations of the Poincare group, and of parity, are exploited to construct spinlike operators acting on the polarization states of a photon at each fixed energy momentum. The nontrivial topological features of these representations relevant for massless particles, and the departures from the treatment of massive finite spin representations, are highlighted and addressed.Comment: Revtex 9 page
