    Precursor luminescence near the collapse of laser-induced bubbles in alkali-salt solutions

    A precursor luminescence pulse consisting of atomic line emission is observed as much as 150 nanoseconds prior to the collapse point of laser-induced bubbles in alkali-metal solutions. The timing of the emission from neutral Na, Li, and K atoms is strongly dependent on the salt concentration, which appears to result from resonant radiation trapping by the alkali atoms in the bubble. The alkali emission ends at the onset of the blackbody luminescence pulse at the bubble collapse point, and the duration of the blackbody pulse is found to be reduced by up to 30% as the alkali salt concentration is increased.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/84214/1/CAV2009-final166.pd

    Detecting Spatial Orientation Demands during Virtual Navigation using EEG Brain Sensing

    This study shows how brain sensing can offer insight to the evaluation of human spatial orientation in virtual reality (VR) and establish a role for electroencephalogram (EEG) in virtual navigation. Research suggests that the evaluation of spatial orientation in VR benefits by goingbeyond performance measures or questionnaires to measurements of the user’s cognitive state. While EEG has emerged as a practical brain sensing technology in cognitive research, spatial orientation tasks often rely on multiple factors (e.g., reference frame used, ability to update simulated rotation, and/or left-right confusion) which may be inaccessible to this measurement. EEG has been shown to correlate with human spatial orientation in previous research. In this paper, we use convolutional neural network (CNN), an advanced technique in machine learning, to train a detection model that can identify moments in which VR users experienced some increase in spatial orientation demands in real-time. Our results demonstrate that we can indeed use machine learning technique to detect such cognitive state of increasing spatial orientation demands in virtual reality research with 96% accurate on average

    [Introduction]: Extreme temperatures can cause severe reductions in wheat yield, including in Australia where temperatures are highly variable within and across growing seasons. A single post head-emergence frost (PHEF) event has the potential to devastate individual wheat crop by damaging stems and killing whole head. Management of crop phenology to avoid PHEF is very important in many parts of the world where frost risk is high. Breeding for improved reproductive frost tolerance could allow greater yield and economic benefits to be achieved, by (i) reducing direct frost damage and (ii) allowing earlier sowing to reduce risks of late-season drought and/or heat stresses (Fig. 1).     Tracing sediment transport and bed regime in Nha Trang Bay

    Three spatial structure groups of radionuclides in U and Th series, 210Pb-excess and 137Cs, and 40K were found based on analyzing temporal and spatial datum of their content by factor analysis with oblique rotation in Nhatrang bay. U and Th spatial structure with their contours decreased toward the offshore, ran longshore and divided seawater of bay into two parts with strong gradient on both sides. Inside part located from center of Nhatrang bay toward the seashore with three main deposit centers of their contents higher than 23 Bq/kg.dry for 238U and 40 Bq/kg.dry for 232Th, indicated unstability of shoreline. Almost sediments coming from river extended toward the offshore, were stopped and transported toward southeastern. The outside part was less than above mentioned content. The boundary line between two parts superposed with the constantly limit line of turbid plume in the rainy season. Direct influence of the continental runoff was limited by the 9 Bq/kg.dry contour of 238U, 19 Bq/kg.dry contour of 232Th. Longshore current was a predominant process whereas lateral transport as sifting and winnowing process of finer grains in sediments of Nhatrang bay. Areas that had very low content of 137Cs and 210 Pb-excess adjoining shoreline showed areas being eroded. Accumulation of 137Cs and 210 Pbexcess nearby river mouth characterized for fine compositions of sediments controlled by seasonal plumes and sites further toward the south indicated finer materials transported from river and accumulated in lack of hydrodynamic process. Near shore accumulation of 40K revealed the sediments there originated from bed erosion

    Cost-effective solutions and tools for medical image processing and design of personalised cranioplasty implants

    Cranial defects which are caused by bone tumors or traffic accidents are treated by cranioplasty techniques. Cranioplasty implants are required to protect the underlying brain, correct major aesthetic deformities, or both. With the rapid develop-ment of computer graphics, medical image processing (MIP) and manufacturing technologies in recent decades, nowadays, personalised cranioplasty implants can be designed and made to improve the quality of cranial defect treatments. However, software tools for MIP and 3D modelling of implants are ex-pensive; and they normally require high technical skills. Espe-cially, the process of design and development of personalised cranioplasty implants normally requires a multidisciplinary team, including experts in MIP, 3D design and modelling, and Biomedical Engineering; this leads to challenges and difficulties for technology transfers and implementations in hospitals. This research is aimed at developing, in particular, cost-effective solutions and tools for design and modeling of per-sonalised cranioplasty implants, and to simplify the design and modelling of implants, as well as to reduce the design and modeling time. In this way, surgeons and engineers can con-veniently and easily design personalised cranioplasty implants, without the need of using complex MIP and CAD tools; and as a result the cost of implants will be minimised

    Aquaculture and capture fisheries in Vietnam have been increasing fast in the last decade, especially aquaculture growth rate is 12% for the 1999 – 2003 period, contributing a significant part into the hunger eradication and poverty reduction1. Vietnam is to be ranked into one of the countries potential to produce the aquatic economic in the world, and the fact is that, after 40 years of establishing, the fisheries sector has made remarkable contributions to the country. By the list, at the moment the aquatic products make up about 4 - 5% of GDP and create job opportunities for over 3 three million employees (VASEP, 2004), in which the largest contribution is from shrimp farming.     The Link between Cognitive Measures and ADLs and IADL Functioning in Mild Alzheimer's: What Has Gender Got to Do with It?

    Objectives. To investigate the link between neurocognitive measures and various aspects of daily living (ADL and IADL) in women and men with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods. Participants were 202 AD patients (91 male, 111 female) with CDR global scores of ≀1. ADLs and IADLs ratings were obtained from caregivers. Cognitive domains were assessed with neuropsychological testing. Results. Memory and executive functioning were related to IADL scores. Executive functioning was linked to total ADL. Comparisons stratified on gender found attention predicted total ADL score in both men and women. Attention predicted bathing and eating ability in women only. Language predicted IADL functions in men (food preparation) and women (driving). Conclusions. Associations between ADLs/IADLs and memory, learning, executive functioning, and language suggest that even in patients with mild AD, basic ADLs require complex cognitive processes.     Deep Memory Networks for Attitude Identification

    We consider the task of identifying attitudes towards a given set of entities from text. Conventionally, this task is decomposed into two separate subtasks: target detection that identifies whether each entity is mentioned in the text, either explicitly or implicitly, and polarity classification that classifies the exact sentiment towards an identified entity (the target) into positive, negative, or neutral. Instead, we show that attitude identification can be solved with an end-to-end machine learning architecture, in which the two subtasks are interleaved by a deep memory network. In this way, signals produced in target detection provide clues for polarity classification, and reversely, the predicted polarity provides feedback to the identification of targets. Moreover, the treatments for the set of targets also influence each other -- the learned representations may share the same semantics for some targets but vary for others. The proposed deep memory network, the AttNet, outperforms methods that do not consider the interactions between the subtasks or those among the targets, including conventional machine learning methods and the state-of-the-art deep learning models.Comment: Accepted to WSDM'1
