Zn Diffusion and α-Fe(Zn) Layer Growth During Annealing of Zn-Coated B Steel
Direct hot press forming of Zn-coated 22MnB5 steels is impeded by micro-cracks that occur in the substrate due to the presence of Zn during the forming process. A study was therefore undertaken to quantify concentration of Zn across the α-Fe(Zn) coating and on grain boundaries in the α-Fe(Zn) layer and the underlying γ-Fe(Zn) substrate after isothermal annealing of Zn-coated 22MnB5 at 1173 K (900 °C) and to link the Zn distribution to the amount and type of micro-cracks observed in deformed samples. Finite difference model was developed to describe Zn diffusion and the growth of the α-Fe(Zn) layer. The penetration of Zn into the γ-Fe(Zn) substrate after 600 seconds annealing at 1173 K (900 °C) through bulk diffusion is estimated to be 3 μm, and the diffusion depth of Zn on the γ-Fe(Zn) grain boundaries is estimated to be 6 μm, which is significantly shorter than the maximum length (15 to 50 μm) of the micro-cracks formed in the severely stressed conditions, indicating that the Zn diffusion into the γ-Fe(Zn) from the α-Fe(Zn) during annealing is not correlated to the depth of micro-cracks. On the other hand, the maximum amount of Zn present in α-Fe(Zn) layer decreases with annealing time as the layer grows and Zn oxidizes, and the amount of Zn-enriched areas inside the α-Fe(Zn) layer is reduced leading to reduced length of cracking. Solid-Metal-Induced Embrittlement mechanism is proposed to explain the benefit of extended annealing on reduced depth of micro-crack penetration into the γ-Fe(Zn) substrate
Universal phase transitions of B1 structured stoichiometric transition-metal carbides
The high-pressure phase transitions of B1-structured stoichiometric
transition metal carbides (TMCs, TM=Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta) were
systematically investigated using ab initio calculations. These carbides
underwent universal phase transitions along two novel phase-transition routes,
namely, B1\rightarrowdistorted TlI (TlI')\rightarrowTlI and/or
B1\rightarrowdistorted TiB (TiB')\rightarrowTiB, when subjected to pressures.
The two routes can coexist possibly because of the tiny enthalpy differences
between the new phases under corresponding pressures. Four new phases result
from atomic slips of the B1-structured parent phases under pressure. After
completely releasing the pressure, taking TiC as a representative of TMCs, only
its new TlI'-type phase is mechanically and dynamically stable, and may be

Does a radio jet drive the massive multi-phase outflow in the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 10565+2448?
We present new upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) HI 21-cm
observations of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 10565+2448, previously
reported to show blueshifted, broad, and shallow HI absorption indicating an
outflow. Our higher spatial resolution observations have localised this
blueshifted outflow, which is 1.36 kpc southwest of the radio centre and
has a blueshifted velocity of and a full width at
half maximum (FWHM) of . The spatial extent and
kinematic properties of the HI outflow are consistent with the previously
detected cold molecular outflows in IRAS 10565+2448, suggesting that they
likely have the same driving mechanism and are tracing the same outflow. By
combining the multi-phase gas observations, we estimate a total outflowing mass
rate of at least and a total energy loss rate of
at least , where the contribution from the
ionised outflow is negligible, emphasising the importance of including both
cold neutral and molecular gas when quantifying the impact of outflows. We
present evidence of the presence of a radio jet and argue that this may play a
role in driving the observed outflows. The modest radio luminosity
of the jet in IRAS
10565+2448 implies that the jet contribution to driving outflows should not be

Comparison of sequencing-based methods to profile DNA methylation and identification of monoallelic epigenetic modifications.
Analysis of DNA methylation patterns relies increasingly on sequencing-based profiling methods. The four most frequently used sequencing-based technologies are the bisulfite-based methods MethylC-seq and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS), and the enrichment-based techniques methylated DNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeDIP-seq) and methylated DNA binding domain sequencing (MBD-seq). We applied all four methods to biological replicates of human embryonic stem cells to assess their genome-wide CpG coverage, resolution, cost, concordance and the influence of CpG density and genomic context. The methylation levels assessed by the two bisulfite methods were concordant (their difference did not exceed a given threshold) for 82% for CpGs and 99% of the non-CpG cytosines. Using binary methylation calls, the two enrichment methods were 99% concordant and regions assessed by all four methods were 97% concordant. We combined MeDIP-seq with methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme (MRE-seq) sequencing for comprehensive methylome coverage at lower cost. This, along with RNA-seq and ChIP-seq of the ES cells enabled us to detect regions with allele-specific epigenetic states, identifying most known imprinted regions and new loci with monoallelic epigenetic marks and monoallelic expression

Effects of Interferon-α/β on HBV Replication Determined by Viral Load
Interferons α and β (IFN-α/β) are type I interferons produced by the host to control microbial infections. However, the use of IFN-α to treat hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients generated sustained response to only a minority of patients. By using HBV transgenic mice as a model and by using hydrodynamic injection to introduce HBV DNA into the mouse liver, we studied the effect of IFN-α/β on HBV in vivo. Interestingly, our results indicated that IFN-α/β could have opposite effects on HBV: they suppressed HBV replication when viral load was high and enhanced HBV replication when viral load was low. IFN-α/β apparently suppressed HBV replication via transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulations. In contrast, IFN-α/β enhanced viral replication by inducing the transcription factor HNF3γ and activating STAT3, which together stimulated HBV gene expression and replication. Further studies revealed an important role of IFN-α/β in stimulating viral growth and prolonging viremia when viral load is low. This use of an innate immune response to enhance its replication and persistence may represent a novel strategy that HBV uses to enhance its growth and spread in the early stage of viral infection when the viral level is low
