Effect of Biozyme T.F. on yield and quality of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)
The effect of Biozyme T.F., a foliar fertilizer, on the growth and yield of tomato was determined. Plants were treated with Biozyme T.F. concentrations of 250, 500
and 700 cc ha-1. Plants treated with Biozyme T.F. increased percent fruit set, mean number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit diameter, mean number of locules per fruit, and number of seeds per fruit. Applying Biozyme T.F., especially at 500 cc ha-1, resulted in significantly
higher fruit yield. Biozyme T.F. did not affect fruit pH. Une expérience était
entreprise pour déterminer l'effet de Biozyme T.F., un engrais foliaire, sur la croissance et le rendement de tomate. Les plantes étaient traitées avec Biozyme T.F. de concentrations de 250, 500 et 700 cc ha-1. Les plantes traitées de Biozyme augmentaient le pourcentage de
nouaison de fruit, nombre moyen de fruit/plante, poids de fruit, diamètre de fruit, nombre moyen de loges / fruit et nombre de graines/fruits. Appliquant Biozyme T.F. surtout à 500 cc ha-1, résultait en un rendement de fruit considérablement plus élevé. Biozyme T.F. n'a pas

A Bayesian Model for Predicting Road Traffic Fatalities in Ghana
Bayesian model for predicting the annual regional distribution of the number of road traffic fatalities in Ghana is derived, using road traffic accident statistics data from the National Road Safety Commission, Ghana Statistical Service and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority. The data span 1991 to 2009. Since the parameters are assumed to vary across the various regions, they are considered to be random variables with probability distributions. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling techniques were used to draw samples from each of the posterior distribution, thereby determining the values of the unknown parameters for each region based on a given data. The study has shown that population and number of registered vehicles are predominant factors affecting road traffic fatalities in Ghana. The effect of other additional factors on road traffic fatality such as human error (due to the driver, passenger and/or pedestrian), vehicle (its condition and maintenance), environmental/weather and nature of the road cannot be ruled out.
Elsie Ezinnwa Nwoko: An Art Music Composer and Music Education Practioner
An art music composer as the term imply refers to a person or persons who were academically or formally trained in the art and techniques involved in music composition. These categories of composers are broadly divided into two – those whose compositional styles reflect that of western classical music and those whose creative styles seek to leave imprints of Africanness on their works. On the other hand, a music education practitioner is one who had had formal training in the field of music education conceptually, theoretically and practically – who in turn trains and or transmit musical knowledge to learners. In other words, a music education practitioner could be called a music educator. In Nigeria today abounds art music composers and music education practitioners. Examples are professor J.H.K, Nketia, T.K.E, Philips, professor Omibiyi-Obidike, Ephraim Amu, professor W.W.C, Echezona, Fela Sowande, professor Richard Okafor to mention a few. This paper focuses on Elsie E. Nwoko as one of the founding fathers of African musical arts education in Nigeria. The topic shall be examined under the following headings: Elsie Nwoko’s biographical data, Elsie Nwoko as an art music composer and music educator, her works and contributions to African musical arts education and conclusion. In order to achieve the objective of this paper, related materials were perused and reviewed. Oral interview and random sampling methods were also employed.
Glass-Transition Temperature of the β-Relaxation as the Major Predictive Parameter for Recrystallization of Neat Amorphous Drugs.
Recrystallization of amorphous drugs is currently limiting the simple approach to improve solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs by amorphization of a crystalline form of the drug. In view of this, molecular mobility, α-relaxation and β-relaxation processes with the associated transition temperatures Tgα and Tgβ, was investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The correlation between the transition temperatures and the onset of recrystallization for nine amorphous drugs, stored under dry conditions at a temperature of 296 K, was determined. From the results obtained, Tgα does not correlate with the onset of recrystallization under the experimental storage conditions. However, a clear correlation between Tgβ and the onset of recrystallization was observed. It is shown that at storage temperature below Tgβ, amorphous nifedipine retains its amorphous form. On the basis of the correlation, an empirical correlation is proposed for predicting the onset of recrystallization for drugs stored at 0% RH and 296 K
Sugar metabolism in expanding husk leaves of flint corn (Zea mays L.) genotypes differing in husk leaf size
Relationships between leaf expansion and MeOH-soluble (cytosol) and cell-wall fractions, and their sugar composition prior to silking in flint corn lines were studied. A greater husk leaf area of one genotype, X-15 is mainly due to prolonged and higher rate of expansion. Prior to rapid expansion of husk leaf area, neutral sugars in the cytosol fraction accounted for most of the non-starch carbohydrates (56-62%), while hemicellulose and cellulose fractions accounted for less than 20%.0 In mature leaf parts, however, sugars in the cytosol fraction decreased but those in hemicellulose and cellulose fractions increased by 30 0x1.e499cp-891nd 42%, respectively. The predominant sugar in the cytosol fraction was glucose (Glc), while in the hemicellulose fraction xylose (Xyl) and arabinose (Ara) dominated. During rapid expansion of husk leaves, 13C was incorporated at a higher rate into hemicellulose than cellulose, and this process was more active in X-15 than in other genotypes. During an identical period, 13C atom 0.000000e+00xcess in Xyl increased markedly in the hemicellulose fraction, however it remained low in the cytosol one. The current results suggest that synthesis of Xyl and xylan plays an important role in renewal of hemicellulose, which may be required for expansion
Drug-resistant genotypes and multi-clonality in Plasmodium falciparum analysed by direct genome sequencing from peripheral blood of malaria patients.
Naturally acquired blood-stage infections of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum typically harbour multiple haploid clones. The apparent number of clones observed in any single infection depends on the diversity of the polymorphic markers used for the analysis, and the relative abundance of rare clones, which frequently fail to be detected among PCR products derived from numerically dominant clones. However, minority clones are of clinical interest as they may harbour genes conferring drug resistance, leading to enhanced survival after treatment and the possibility of subsequent therapeutic failure. We deployed new generation sequencing to derive genome data for five non-propagated parasite isolates taken directly from 4 different patients treated for clinical malaria in a UK hospital. Analysis of depth of coverage and length of sequence intervals between paired reads identified both previously described and novel gene deletions and amplifications. Full-length sequence data was extracted for 6 loci considered to be under selection by antimalarial drugs, and both known and previously unknown amino acid substitutions were identified. Full mitochondrial genomes were extracted from the sequencing data for each isolate, and these are compared against a panel of polymorphic sites derived from published or unpublished but publicly available data. Finally, genome-wide analysis of clone multiplicity was performed, and the number of infecting parasite clones estimated for each isolate. Each patient harboured at least 3 clones of P. falciparum by this analysis, consistent with results obtained with conventional PCR analysis of polymorphic merozoite antigen loci. We conclude that genome sequencing of peripheral blood P. falciparum taken directly from malaria patients provides high quality data useful for drug resistance studies, genomic structural analyses and population genetics, and also robustly represents clonal multiplicity
Extensive dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum densities, stages and genotyping profiles
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Individuals living in areas of high malaria transmission often have different <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>clones detected in the peripheral blood over time. The aim of this study was to assess the dynamics of asymptomatic <it>P. falciparum </it>infections in a few hours intervals.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Capillary blood samples were collected 6-hourly during five days from asymptomatic children in a highly endemic area in Tanzania. Parasite densities and maturation stages were investigated by light microscopy. Types and number of clones were analysed by PCR based genotyping of the polymorphic merozoite surface proteins 1 and 2 genes. Results: Parasite densities and maturation stages fluctuated 48-hourly with a gradual shift into more mature forms. Various genotyping patterns were observed in repeated samples over five days with only few samples with identical profiles. Up to six alleles differed in samples collected six hours apart in the same individual.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This detailed assessment highlights the extensive within-host dynamics of <it>P. falciparum </it>populations and the limitations of single blood samples to determine parasite densities, stages and genotyping profiles in a malaria infected individual.</p
Exploring infant and young child-feeding practices among mothers of well-nourished children in northern Ghana: An INPreP substudy
This study investigated infant and young child-feeding (IYCF) practices among mothers of well-nourished children in northern Ghana. This was a qualitative study where in-depth individual interviews were conducted with participants. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and QSR Nvivo software version 11 was used to organize the data before thematic analysis. It was observed that mothers of well-nourished children were likely to adhere to breastfeeding guidelines and also practice appropriate complementary feeding. Furthermore, these mothers mostly had some form of support from their husbands and mother-in-laws in feeding their infants. While adoption and adherence to appropriate IYCF practices contribute to improved nutrition outcomes in children, social support systems are needed to sustain the practice
