    Levels and enantiomeric signatures of methyl sulfonyl PCB and DDE metabolites in livers of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the southern North Sea

    The concentration of 26 methyl sulfonyl metabolites of polychlorinated biphenyls (MeSO2-PCBs) and of p,p'-DDE (MeSO2-DDE) were determined in 19 liver samples from harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded between 1997 and 2000 on the Belgian and French North Sea Coasts. The total concentration of MeSO2-PCBs ranged from 39 to 4221 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and were generally higher in adults (age >2 yr, range 969-4221 ng/g lw) than in juveniles (age 0.73 or EF < 0.23) for the measured chiral MeSO2-PCB congeners was found in all samples. This result may suggest that one atropisomer may be preferentially formed in harbor porpoises or that the atropisomers are retained in a highly selective manner.Peer reviewe

    Electrospun Polyacrylic Acid Polymer Fibers Functionalized with Metallophthalocyanines for Photosensitizing and Gas Sensing Applications

    The photophysical and photochemical properties of tetraaminophthalocyanine complexes of lutetium and zinc covalently linked to polyacrylic acid were studied alongside those of unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine within the same polymeric fiber matrix. All three phthalocyanines within the solid fiber matrices showed photoactivity by the generation of singlet oxygen as was observed in solution. The fluorescence behaviors of the composite fibers equally parallel those in solution. For the unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine composite, the fiber showed fluorescence quenching on interaction with gaseous nitrogen dioxide similar to that in DMF and, thus could be a promising nanofabric material in developing optoelectronic devices that are responsive to the gas

    The addition of primary amines as solubilizing reagents for phthalocyaninatoiron complexes is shown to afford six-coordinate bis(amine)phthalocyaninato complexes, i.e., [Fe(amine)2(pc)] 2 (amine = decan-1-amine) and 3 (amine = benzylamine), with the two new N-donors occupying the trans-axial positions. The new complexes were characterized by extensive NMR measurements in THF solution. For complex 3 with the benzylamine ligand, the solid-state structure was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Complex 2 is sufficiently labile in THF solution to exchange one amine ligand against CO (gas) affording an equilibrium mixture containing [Fe(amine)(CO)(pc)] 4
