Ultra-large bandwidth hollow-core guiding in all-silica Bragg fibers with nano-supports
We demonstrate a new class of hollow-core Bragg fibers that are composed of
concentric cylindrical silica rings separated by nanoscale support bridges. We
theoretically predict and experimentally observe hollow-core confinement over
an octave frequency range. The bandwidth of bandgap guiding in this new class
of Bragg fibers exceeds that of other hollow-core fibers reported in the
literature. With only three rings of silica cladding layers, these Bragg fibers
achieve propagation loss of the order of 1 dB/m.Comment: 9 pages including 5 figure
Dietary determinants of changes in waist circumference adjusted for body mass index - a proxy measure of visceral adiposity
Background Given the recognized health effects of visceral fat, the understanding of how diet can modulate changes in the phenotype âwaist circumference for a given body mass index (WCBMI)â, a proxy measure of visceral adiposity, is deemed necessary. Hence, the objective of the present study was to assess the association between dietary factors and prospective changes in visceral adiposity as measured by changes in the phenotype WCBMI. Methods and Findings We analyzed data from 48,631 men and women from 5 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Anthropometric measurements were obtained at baseline and after a median follow-up time of 5.5 years. WCBMI was defined as the residuals of waist circumference regressed on body mass index, and annual change in WCBMI (ÂżWCBMI, cm/y) was defined as the difference between residuals at follow-up and baseline, divided by follow-up time. The association between energy, energy density (ED), macronutrients, alcohol, glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), fibre and ÂżWCBMI was modelled using centre-specific adjusted linear regression, and random-effects meta-analyses to obtain pooled estimates. Men and women with higher ED and GI diets showed significant increases in their WCBMI, compared to those with lower ED and GI [1 kcal/g greater ED predicted a ÂżWCBMI of 0.09 cm (95% CI 0.05 to 0.13) in men and 0.15 cm (95% CI 0.09 to 0.21) in women; 10 units greater GI predicted a ÂżWCBMI of 0.07 cm (95% CI 0.03 to 0.12) in men and 0.06 cm (95% CI 0.03 to 0.10) in women]. Among women, lower fibre intake, higher GL, and higher alcohol consumption also predicted a higher ÂżWCBMI. Conclusions Results of this study suggest that a diet with low GI and ED may prevent visceral adiposity, defined as the prospective changes in WCBMI. Additional effects may be obtained among women of low alcohol, low GL, and high fibre intake
The Inverse S-Box, Non-linear Polynomial Relations and Cryptanalysis of Block Ciphers
Abstract. This paper is motivated by the design of AES. We consider a broader question of cryptanalysis of block ciphers having very good non-linearity and diffusion. Can we expect anyway, to attacks such ciphers, clearly designed to render hopeless the main classical attacks? Recently a lot of attention have been drawn to the existence of multivariate algebraic relations for AES (and other) S-boxes. Then, if the XSL-type algebraic attacks on block ciphers [11] are shown to work well, the answer would be positive. In this paper we show that the answer is certainly positive for many other constructions of ciphers. This is not due to an algebraic attack, but to new types of generalised linear cryptanalysis, highly-nonlinear in flavour. We present several constructions of somewhat special practical block ciphers, seemingly satisfying all the design criteria of AES and using similar S-boxes, and yet being extremely weak. They can be generalised, and evolve into general attacks that can be applied- potentially- to any block cipher. Consensus on Training and Implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery: A Delphi Study.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is widely accepted in current surgical practice due to its positive impact on patient outcomes. The successful implementation of ERAS is challenging and compliance with protocols varies widely. Continual staff education is essential for successful ERAS programmes. Teaching modalities exist, but there remains no agreement regarding the optimal training curriculum or how its effectiveness is assessed. We aimed to draw consensus from an expert panel regarding the successful training and implementation of ERAS.
A modified Delphi technique was used; three rounds of questionnaires were sent to 58 selected international experts from 11 countries across multiple ERAS specialities and multidisciplinary teams (MDT) between January 2016 and February 2017. We interrogated opinion regarding four topics: (1) the components of a training curriculum and the structure of training courses; (2) the optimal framework for successful implementation and audit of ERAS including a guide for data collection; (3) a framework to assess the effectiveness of training; (4) criteria to define ERAS training centres of excellence.
An ERAS training course must cover the evidence-based principles of ERAS with team-oriented training. Successful implementation requires strong leadership, an ERAS facilitator and an effective MDT. Effectiveness of training can be measured by improved compliance. A training centre of excellence should show a willingness to teach and demonstrable team working.
We propose an international expert consensus providing an ERAS training curriculum, a framework for successful implementation, methods for assessing effectiveness of training and a definition of ERAS training centres of excellence
Supercooled Liquid Dynamics Studied via Shear-Mechanical Spectroscopy
We report dynamical shear-modulus measurements for five glass-forming liquids
(pentaphenyl trimethyl trisiloxane, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate,
1,2-propanediol, and m-touluidine). The shear-mechanical spectra are obtained
by the piezoelectric shear-modulus gauge (PSG) method. This technique allows
one to measure the shear modulus ( Pa) of the liquid within a
frequency range from 1 mHz to 10 kHz. We analyze the frequency-dependent
response functions to investigate whether time-temperature superposition (TTS)
is obeyed. We also study the shear-modulus loss-peak position and its
high-frequency part. It has been suggested that when TTS applies, the
high-frequency side of the imaginary part of the dielectric response decreases
like a power law of the frequency with an exponent -1/2. This conjecture is
analyzed on the basis of the shear mechanical data. We find that TTS is obeyed
for pentaphenyl trimethyl trisiloxane and in 1,2-propanediol while in the
remaining liquids evidence of a mechanical process is found. Although
the the high-frequency power law behavior of the shear-loss
may approach a limiting value of when lowering the temperature, we
find that the exponent lies systematically above this value (around 0.4). For
the two liquids without beta relaxation (pentaphenyl trimethyl trisiloxane and
1,2-propanediol) we also test the shoving model prediction, according to which
the the relaxation-time activation energy is proportional to the instantaneous
shear modulus. We find that the data are well described by this model.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Far-Ultraviolet Dust Albedo Measurements in the Upper Scorpius Cloud Using the SPINR Sounding Rocket Experiment
The Spectrograph for Photometric Imaging with Numeric Reconstruction (SPINR)
sounding rocket experiment was launched on 2000 August 4 to record
far-ultraviolet (912-1450 A) spectral and spatial information for the giant
reflection nebula in the Upper Scorpius region. The data were divided into
three arbitrary bandpasses (912-1029 A, 1030-1200 A, and 1235-1450 A) for which
stellar and nebular flux levels were derived. These flux measurements were used
to constrain a radiative transfer model and to determine the dust albedo for
the Upper Scorpius region. The resulting albedos were 0.28+/-0.07 for the
912-1029 A bandpass, 0.33+/-0.07 for the 1030-1200 A bandpass, and 0.77+/-0.13
for the 1235-1450 A bandpass
Trivial trauma and delayed rupture of a normal spleen: a case report
Although a majority of splenic ruptures present acutely with a known mechanism of injury, a
minority of patients present days to weeks following trauma with a delayed rupture. Also uncommon is the
atraumatic rupture, the vast majority of which occur in patients with underlying splenic pathology. A handful of
cases of apparently spontaneous rupture of a normal spleen are reported; however, there is debate about whether
these actually represent delayed ruptures following a history of trauma that is not elicited. Although a few cases of
delayed rupture of the spleen following trivial trauma have been reported, the majority of these present evidence
of an underlying disease process. We found only two such cases that documented a normal spleen and three
cases where underlying splenic pathology was not reported. We review the literature and discuss the
phenomenon of delayed rupture of the normal spleen following trivial trauma
New On Line Resource for Psycholinguistic
Picture naming is a widely used technique in psycholinguistic studies. Here, we describe new on-line resources that our project has compiled and made available to researchers on the world wide web at http://crl.ucsd.edu/~aszekely/ipnp/. The website provides access to a wide range of picture stimuli and related norms in seven languages. Picture naming norms, including indices of name agreement and latency, for 520 black-and-white drawings of common objects and 275 concrete transitive and intransitive actions are presented. Norms for age-of-acquisition, word-frequency, familiarity, goodness-of-depiction, and visual complexity are included. An on-line database query system can be used to select a specific range of stimuli, based on parameters of interest for a wide range of studies on healthy and clinical populations, as well as studies of language development
