    Residual based localisation and quantification of peaks in X-ray diffractograms

    We consider data consisting of photon counts of diffracted X-rays as a function of the angle of diffraction. The problem is to determine the positions, powers and shapes of the relevant peaks. An additional difficulty is that the power of the peaks is to be measured from a baseline which itself must be identified. Most methods of de-noising data of this kind do not explicitly take into account the modality of the final estimate. The procedure we propose is based on the so called taut string method which minimizes the number of peaks subject to a tube constraint on the integrated data. The baseline is identified by combining the result of the taut string with an estimate of the first derivative of the baseline obtained using a weighted smoothing spline. Finally each individual peak is expressed as the finite sum of kernels chosen from a parametric family

    In this paper, a new, simple method for measuring the current density distribution in fuel cells with meander flow fields is described. This method has been used to investigate the reactant activity along the meander channel. The corresponding experimental hardware is very simple, cost-effective and easy to integrate into the fuel cells. A thin semi-segmented plate made of expanded graphite serves as a passive resistor network. The set-up is based on the idea that the electronic conductivity of the expanded graphite is relatively low in current direction. For typical current densities in polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), this leads to voltage drops in the range of several millivolts using usual current densities. On the other hand, the conductivity in-plane is considerable higher which is beneficial for equalizing the potential across the segment area. The new set-up can be used to measure the current density distribution in a single cell as well as in a stack at any desired position. The local potential difference across the graphite plate is caused by the local current flowing through it. By mapping these potential differences at different locations, the current distribution in the fuel cell can be derived. This experimental set-up has been used to investigate the current distribution of a 240 cm(2) PEFC single cell with different operating conditions.     New results on the superdeformed 196^{196}Bi nucleus a re reported. We have observed with the EUROBALL IV γ\gamma-ray spectrometer array a superdeformed trans ition of 124 keV which is the lowest observed energy γ\gamma-ray in any superdeformed nucleus. We have de velopped microscopic cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the SLy4 effective force and a realistic surface p airing which strongly support the Kπ=2K^\pi=2^-(π\pi[651]1/2ν\otimes \nu[752]5/2) assignment of this su perdeformed band

The final published article is available from the link below.Analysing the roll-call votes of the MPs of the Weimar Republic we find: (1) that party competition in the Weimar parliaments can be structured along two dimensions: an economic left–right and a pro-/anti-democratic. Remarkably, this is stable throughout the entire lifespan of the Republic and not just in the later years and despite the varying content of votes across the lifespan of the Republic, and (2) that nearly all parties were troubled by intra-party divisions, though, in particular, the national socialists and communists became homogeneous in the final years of the Republic.Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstan

    Fully differential cross sections for photo-double-ionization of D2

    We report the first kinematically complete study of the four-body fragmentation of the D2 molecule following absorption of a single photon. For equal energy sharing of the two electrons and a photon energy of 75.5 eV, we observed the relaxation of one of the selection rules valid for He photo-double-ionization and a strong dependence of the electron angular distribution on the orientation of the molecular axis. This effect is reproduced by a model in which a pair of photoionization amplitudes is introduced for the light polarization parallel and perpendicular to the molecular axis

    Spätestens seit den gesellschaftlichen Modernisierungsschüben in den sechziger Jahren identifiziert auch die Germanistik Erkenntnis- und Wissenszuwachs, ja allgemeiner den "Fortschritt" ihres Fachs, mit Komplexitätserhöhung. Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint es mir wenig plausibel, die seitdem erfolgten inneren Ausdifferenzierungen und interdisziplinären Grenzüberschreitungen als durch Identitätsverlust, Zerstreuung und Desintegration gekennzeichnete Niedergangsszenarien zu beschreiben. Die Veränderungen gehorchen der immanenten Logik germanistischer Forschung, einer "disziplinierten", auf Leistung ausgerichteten, an kooperativen Großforschungsvorhaben partizipierenden Wissensproduktion
