Potential of eggplant peel as by-product

    Get PDF
In this study ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds contents of eggplant flesh and eggplant peel were determined. Among the investigated eggplant cultivars generally eggplant peel had higher ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds contents than eggplant flesh. Ascorbic acid content in eggplant flesh ranged from 33.62 to 92.75 mg kgāˆ’1 and in eggplant peel from 12.45 to 111.01 mg kgāˆ’1. Phenolic compounds content ranged from 11.77 to 22.18 g kgāˆ’1 in eggplant flesh and from 13.46 to 29.42 g kgāˆ’1 in eggplant peel. Eggplant peel is usually treated as waste, i.e. byproduct, omitting its potentially beneficial characteristics. Due to higher ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds contents, further investigations should be directed on possible use of eggplant peel as natural ingredient for functional products formulation

During the period from 1995 to 1999, 64 patients were treated for ectopic pregnancy. All patients admitted to the department passed the same procedure including (complete preoperative laboratory findings, Beta HCG, serum progesterone and transvaginal colour Doppler). In patients who had ultrasound finding typical for ectopic pregnancy in combination with positive Beta HCG, conservative treatment was primarily done. In the rest of the patients, Beta HCG was tested every second day and in combination with the clinical and vaginosonographical findings the patients underwent diagnostic or operative laparoscopy. Out of 64 patients 36 had visible ectopic pregnancy when admitted to the clinical department. Three patients had no visible ectopic pregnancy neither at the time of their admission to the department nor at the time of laparoscopy. One of them had cervical pregnancy and the other two had pregnancies in the uterine part of the tube. The patient with cervical pregnancy was treated with metrotrexat (MTX) 12 mg daily in 5 doses. One patient with cornual pregnancy was treated with high doses of oxytocin infusion in combination with MEB intravenously 3x1 amp. The other patient with cornual pregnancy underwent laparoscopy with cornual resection and salpingectomy. Four of other tubar pregnancies were treated with metrotrexat 12mg/day for 5 days. Other ectopic pregnancies were treated as follows: 36 laparoscopic salpingectomies, 10 laparoscopic salpingotomies with ovum expression, 9 adnexectomies by laparotomy, and 2 laparoscopic adnexectomies

Sour cherry puree was prepared with addition of sucrose or trehalose (5% and 10%). After stabilization of the mixture (puree with sugars), extracts were prepared and contents of phenolics and anthocyanin, polymeric colour percentage, and antioxidant activity were determined. Extracts were stored for 65 days at 4 Ā°C. Control sample was extract of sour cherry puree without sugars. After extraction, extracts with 10% of sucrose or trehalose had higher phenolic content than the control sample. Anthocyanin content was higher in extracts with trehalose addition. During storage of extracts, samples with trehalose had higher retention of phenolic and anthocyanins than other samples. Addition of sucrose and trehalose as well as their amounts affected the stabilities of phenolics, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity in sour cherry extracts

BackgroundWhilst bony fixation of hip replacement has stable solutions, there remains controversy over which bearing best optimizes longevity and function. Ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearing combinations are associated with lower risk of revision due to aseptic loosening and dislocation. Evidence for long-term functional outcomes of modern, 4th generation CoC bearings is limited. The aim of this study was to analyze outcomes and complications of the R3 (TM) Acetabular System (Smith & Nephew, Inc., Cordova, TN, USA) in combination with BIOLOX (R) Delta ceramic femoral head in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA).MethodsBetween June 2009 and May 2011, 175 patients (178 hips) were enrolled into a prospective, study at 6 sites in Europe and prospectively followed-up at 3 months and 1, 3, 5, and 7 years postoperative.ResultsTotal WOMAC score improved from 63 (range, 22-91) preoperative to 8 (range, 0-8) at 1-year follow-up and remained unchanged at 7-year follow-up. Modified Harris hip score improved from 45 (range, 10-87) preoperative to 83 (range, 25-100) at 3 months, 91 (range, 42-100) at 1 year, and 92 (range, 46, 100) at 7 years. UCLA Activity Rating Scale score improved from 3.3 (range, 1-8) preoperative to 6.2 (range, 2-8) at 1 year; it marginally declined to 5.8 (range, 3-8) at 7-year follow-up. There were 4 trochanteric fractures and 5 patients died of unrelated reasons. Three hips were revised (2 periprosthetic fractures and 1 subluxation). The 7-year cumulative survival rate was 98.3%.ConclusionClinical and functional improvements of THA with CoC bearing are maintained at 7 years postoperative.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.Gov, NCT03566082, Registered 10 January 2018-retrospectively registered

Tracking antioxidant properties and color changes in low-sugar bilberry jam as effect of processing, storage and pectin concentration

Abstract

Background

Recently, an increased interest in the identification of valuable possibilities for preserving the antioxidant properties of products obtained by thermal processing of fruits rich in bioactive compounds can be noticed. In this regard, an extensive analysis is necessary in terms of thermal processed products behavior in relation to various factors. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect which processing and storage at 20Ā°C has on the antioxidant properties and color quality of low-sugar bilberry jam with different low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) concentrations.

Results

For all measured parameters, it should be noted that thermal processing induced significant alterations reported to the values registered for fresh fruit. Most important losses due to thermal processing were recorded for total monomeric anthocyanins (TMA) (81-84%), followed by L-ascorbic acid (L-AsAc) content (53-58%), total phenolics (TP) content (42-51%) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) values (36-47%). Moreover, depreciation of the investigated compounds occurred during storage at 20Ā°C. Jam storage for 7 months resulted in severe losses in TMA content in the range 58-72% from the value recorded one day after processing. This coincided with marked increases in polymeric color percent of these products after 7 months of storage. Also, bilberry jam storage for 7 months resulted in a decrease in L-AsAc content of 40-53% from the value recorded one day after processing, 41-57% in TP content and 33-46% from the value recorded one day after processing for FRAP values. By decreasing of LMP concentration in the jam recipe from 1 to 0.3% there has been an increase in losses of investigated compounds.

Conclusion

Overall, the results indicated that bilberry jams can also represent a good source of antioxidant compounds, although compared to the fruit, important losses seem to occur. Practical application of this work is that this kind of information will be very useful in optimizing the jam processing technology and storage conditions, in order to improve the quality of these products.</p

Irinotecan is a topoisomerase I interactive agent, widely used in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. The genotoxic effects of the maximum single dose (18 Ī¼g mL-1), recommended monotherapy dose (9 Ī¼g mL-1), and recommended combined therapy dose (4.5 Ī¼g mL-1) of irinotecan were studied on V79 cells using the comet assay, chromosome aberration assay, and micronucleus test. The cells were treated with irinotecan for 2 h or 24 h. The statistical signifi cance of the results was determined using the one-way ANOVA test and a nonparametric Mann Whitney U test. The comet assay did not show dose-dependent or time-dependent effects. The chromosome aberration analysis showed large DNA rearrangements, i.e., chromosome exchanges. Although the exposed cultures showed a signifi cant increase in micronucleated cells in respect to control, no dose-dependent relation was established among the treated cultures. Timedependent effect was also not observed.

Abstract

Background

To determine factors predicting the duration of time away from work following acute orthopaedic non life threatening trauma

Methods

Prospective cohort study conducted at four hospitals in Victoria, Australia. The cohort comprised 168 patients aged 18-64 years who were working prior to the injury and sustained a range of acute unintentional orthopaedic injuries resulting in hospitalization. Baseline data was obtained by survey and medical record review. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to examine the association between potential predictors and the duration of time away from work during the six month study. The study achieved 89% follow-up.

Results

Of the 168 participants recruited to the study, 68% returned to work during the six month study. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis identified that blue collar work, negative pain attitudes with respect to work, high initial pain intensity, injury severity, older age, initial need for surgery, the presence of co-morbid health conditions at study entry and an orthopaedic injury to more than one region were associated with extended duration away from work following the injury. Participants in receipt of compensation who reported high social functioning at two weeks were 2.58 times more likely to have returned to work than similar participants reporting low social functioning. When only those who had returned to work were considered, the participant reported reason for return to work " to fill the day" was a significant predictor of earlier RTW [RR 2.41 (95% C.I 1.35-4.30)] whereas "financial security" and "because they felt able to" did not achieve significance.

Conclusions

Many injury-related and psycho social factors affect the duration of time away from work following orthopaedic injury. Some of these are potentially modifiable and may be amenable to intervention. Further consideration of the reasons provided by participants for returning to work may provide important opportunities for social marketing approaches designed to alleviate the financial and social burden associated with work disability.</p
