Calculation of three-dimensional compressible laminar and turbulent boundary layers. Calculation of three-dimensional compressible boundary layers on arbitrary wings
A very general method for calculating compressible three-dimensional laminar and turbulent boundary layers on arbitrary wings is described. The method utilizes a nonorthogonal coordinate system for the boundary-layer calculations and includes a geometry package that represents the wing analytically. In the calculations all the geometric parameters of the coordinate system are accounted for. The Reynolds shear-stress terms are modeled by an eddy-viscosity formulation developed by Cebeci. The governing equations are solved by a very efficient two-point finite-difference method used earlier by Keller and Cebeci for two-dimensional flows and later by Cebeci for three-dimensional flows

Modification and Assessment of the Bedside Pediatric Early Warning Score in the Pediatric Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Population
OBJECTIVES:
To determine the validity of the Bedside Pediatric Early Warning Score system in the hematopoietic cell transplant population, and to determine if the addition of weight gain further strengthens the association with need for PICU admission.
DESIGN:
Retrospective cohort study of pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant patients from 2009 to 2016. Daily Pediatric Early Warning Score and weights were collected during hospitalization. Logistic regression was used to identify associations between maximum Pediatric Early Warning Score or Pediatric Early Warning Score plus weight gain and the need for PICU intervention. The primary outcome was need for PICU intervention; secondary outcomes included mortality and intubation.
SETTING:
A large quaternary free-standing children's hospital.
PATIENTS:
One-hundred two pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant recipients.
INTERVENTIONS:
None.
MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:
Of the 102 hematopoietic cell transplant patients included in the study, 29 were admitted to the PICU. The median peak Pediatric Early Warning Score was 11 (interquartile range, 8-13) in the PICU admission cohort, compared with 4 (interquartile range, 3-5) in the cohort without a PICU admission (p < 0.0001). Pediatric Early Warning Score greater than or equal to 8 had a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 90%. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve was 0.83. There was a high negative predictive value at this Pediatric Early Warning Score of 90%. When Pediatric Early Warning Score greater than or equal to 8 and weight gain greater than or equal to 7% were compared together, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve increased to 0.88.
CONCLUSIONS:
In this study, a Pediatric Early Warning Score greater than or equal to 8 was associated with PICU admission, having a moderately high sensitivity and high specificity. This study adds to literature supporting Pediatric Early Warning Score monitoring for hematopoietic cell transplant patients. Combining weight gain with Pediatric Early Warning Score improved the discriminative ability of the model to predict the need for critical care, suggesting that incorporation of weight gain into Pediatric Early Warning Score may be beneficial for monitoring of hematopoietic cell transplant patients
Visualization of leukocyte transendothelial and interstitial migration using reflected light oblique transillumination in intravital video microscopy
Dynamic visualization of the intravascular events leading to the extravasation of leukocytes into tissues by intravital microscopy has significantly expanded our understanding of the underlying molecular processes. In contrast, the detailed observation of leukocyte transendothelial and interstitial migration in vivo has been hampered by the poor image contrast of cells within turbid media that is obtainable by conventional brightfield microscopy. Here we present a microscopic method, termed reflected light oblique transillumination microscopy, that makes use of the optical interference phenomena generated by oblique transillumination to visualize subtle gradients of refractive indices within tissues for enhanced image contrast. Using the mouse cremaster muscle, we demonstrate that this technique makes possible the reliable quantification of extravasated leukocytes as well as the characterization of morphological phenomena of leukocyte transendothelial and interstitial migration
Leech Parasitism of the Gulf Coast Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina major (Testudines:Emydidae) in Mississippi, USA
Ten leeches were collected from a Gulf Coast box turtle, Terrapene carolina major, found crossing a road in Gulfport, Harrison County, Mississippi, USA. Eight of the leeches were identified as Placobdella multilineata and 2 were identified as Helobdella europaea. This represents the second vouchered report of leeches from a box turtle. Helobdella europaea is reported for the first time associated with a turtle and for the second time from the New World
Chaos and Order in Models of Black Hole Pairs
Chaos in the orbits of black hole pairs has by now been confirmed by several
independent groups. While the chaotic behavior of binary black hole orbits is
no longer argued, it remains difficult to quantify the importance of chaos to
the evolutionary dynamics of a pair of comparable mass black holes. None of our
existing approximations are robust enough to offer convincing quantitative
conclusions in the most highly nonlinear regime. It is intriguing to note that
in three different approximations to a black hole pair built of a spinning
black hole and a non-spinning companion, two approximations exhibit chaos and
one approximation does not. The fully relativistic scenario of a spinning
test-mass around a Schwarzschild black hole shows chaos, as does the
Post-Newtonian Lagrangian approximation. However, the approximately equivalent
Post-Newtonian Hamiltonian approximation does not show chaos when only one body
spins. It is well known in dynamical systems theory that one system can be
regular while an approximately related system is chaotic, so there is no formal
conflict. However,the physical question remains, Is there chaos for comparable
mass binaries when only one object spins? We are unable to answer this question
given the poor convergence of the Post-Newtonian approximation to the fully
relativistic system. A resolution awaits better approximations that can be
trusted in the highly nonlinear regime
Spin chain from membrane and the Neumann-Rosochatius integrable system
We find membrane configurations in AdS_4 x S^7, which correspond to the
continuous limit of the SU(2) integrable spin chain, considered as a limit of
the SU(3) spin chain, arising in N=4 SYM in four dimensions, dual to strings in
AdS_5 x S^5. We also discuss the relationship with the Neumann-Rosochatius
integrable system at the level of Lagrangians, comparing the string and
