Were they really laughed at? That much? Gelotophobes and their history of perceived derisibility
The List of Derisible Situations (LDS; Proyer, Hempelmann and Ruch, List of Derisible Situations (LDS), University of Zurich, 2008) consists of 102 different occasions for being laughed at. They were retrieved in a corpus study and compiled into the LDS. Based on this list, information on the frequency and the intensity with which people recall being laughed at during a given time-span (12 months in this study) can be collected. An empirical study (N = 114) examined the relations between the LDS and the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), the joy of being laughed at (gelotophilia), and the joy of laughing at others (katagelasticism; Ruch and Proyer this issue). More than 92% of the participants recalled having been laughed at at least once over the past 12 months. Highest scores were found for experiencing an embarrassing situation, chauvinism of others or being laughed at for doing something awkward or clumsy. Gelotophobia, gelotophilia, and katagelasticism were related about equally to the recalled frequency of events of being laughed at (with the lowest relation to katagelasticism). Gelotophobia, gelotophilia, and katagelasticism yielded a distinct and plausible pattern of correlations to the frequency of events of being laughed at. Gelotophobes recalled the situations of being laughed at with a higher intensity than others. Thus, the fear of being laughed at exists to a large degree independently from actual experiences of being laughed at, but is related to a higher intensity with which these events are experience
The Ca II infrared triplet's performance as an activity indicator compared to Ca II H and K
Aims. A large number of Calcium Infrared Triplet (IRT) spectra are expected
from the GAIA- and CARMENES missions. Conversion of these spectra into known
activity indicators will allow analysis of their temporal evolution to a better
degree. We set out to find such a conversion formula and to determine its
robustness.
Methods. We have compared 2274 Ca II IRT spectra of active main-sequence F to
K stars taken by the TIGRE telescope with those of inactive stars of the same
spectral type. After normalizing and applying rotational broadening, we
subtracted the comparison spectra to find the chromospheric excess flux caused
by activity. We obtained the total excess flux, and compared it to established
activity indices derived from the Ca II H & K lines, the spectra of which were
obtained simultaneously to the infrared spectra.
Results. The excess flux in the Ca II IRT is found to correlate well with
and , as well as , if the
-dependency is taken into account. We find an empirical conversion formula
to calculate the corresponding value of one activity indicator from the
measurement of another, by comparing groups of datapoints of stars with similar

Dynamics, cation conformation and rotamers in guanidinium ionic liquids with ether groups
Ionic liquids are modern materials with a broad range of applications, including electrochemical devices, the exploitation of sustainable resources and chemical processing. Expanding the chemical space to include novel ion classes allows for the elucidation of novel structure-property relationships and fine tuning for specific applications. We prepared a set of ionic liquids based on the sparsely investigated pentamethyl guanidinium cation with a 2-ethoxy-ethyl side chain in combination with a series of frequently used anions. The resulting properties are compared to a cation with a pentyl side chain lacking ether functionalization. We measured the thermal transitions and transport properties to estimate the performance and trends of this cation class. The samples with imide-type anions form liquids at ambient temperature, and show good transport properties, comparable to imidazolium or ammonium ionic liquids. Despite the dynamics being significantly accelerated, ether functionalization of the cation favors the formation of crystalline solids. Single crystal structure analysis, ab initio calculations and variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance measurements (VT-NMR) revealed that cation conformations for the ether- and alkyl-chain-substituted are different in both the solid and liquid states. While ether containing cations adopt compact, curled structures, those with pentyl side chains are linear. The Eyring plot revealed that the curled conformation is accompanied by a higher activation energy for rotation around the carbon-nitrogen bonds, due to the coordination of the ether chain as observed by VT-NMR

Influence of water on tribolayer growth when lubricating steel with a fluorinated phosphonium dicyanamide ionic liquid
This work aims to elucidate the role of environmental humidity on the tribological behavior of steel surfaces lubricated with an ionic liquid comprised of a fluorinated phosphonium cation-tributyl-3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluoro-octyl-phosphonium-and a dicyanamide anion (i.e. N(CN) 2 - ). Ball-on-disk tribotests were carried out at room temperature and at various levels of relative humidity (RH). Water was found to be required to promote the formation of a tribofilm over the contact area. The reaction layer exhibited a patchy morphology, which resembles that observed formed with conventional antiwear additives such as ZnDTP. A surface-chemical analysis of the tribofilm indicated that the tribofilm is composed of fluorides, oxides, and phosphates, pointing to a stress-induced degradation of the ions and corrosion of the sliding counterparts, which is enabled by the presence of water at the sliding interface. © 2019 by the authors
PROJECTS BASED ON THE WEB PROCESSING SERVICE FRAMEWORK BIRDHOUSE
Birdhouse is a collaborative project open for the community to participate. It is a software framework containing a collection of Web Processing Services (WPS). The deployed algorithms are focusing on Earth Systems and environmental data processing with the philosophy of streamlining the software development and deployment. By supporting climate, earth observation and biodiversity data and processes, Birdhouse can be used in a wide array of Earth sciences projects and workflows. The core benefit of this project is to allow the seamless use of climate services developed by a diverse network of national meteorological offices, regional climate service providers, academics, not-for-profit research centers and private industry. As governments move toward open-data policies, there will be a need for analytical services that extract value out of the deluge of information. Using an interoperable software architecture, institutions can provide both data and services allowing users to process the data remotely from a laptop, instead of having to acquire and maintain large storage infrastructures
Spectroscopic variability of two Oe stars
The Oe stars HD45314 and HD60848 have recently been found to exhibit very
different X-ray properties: whilst HD60848 has an X-ray spectrum and emission
level typical of most OB stars, HD45314 features a much harder and brighter
X-ray emission, making it a so-called gamma Cas analogue. Monitoring the
optical spectra could provide hints towards the origin of these very different
behaviours. We analyse a large set of spectroscopic observations of HD45314 and
HD60848, extending over 20 years. We further attempt to fit the H-alpha line
profiles of both stars with a simple model of emission line formation in a
Keplerian disk. Strong variations in the strengths of the H-alpha, H-beta, and
He I 5876 emission lines are observed for both stars. In the case of HD60848,
we find a time lag between the variations in the equivalent widths of these
lines. The emission lines are double peaked with nearly identical strengths of
the violet and red peaks. The H-alpha profile of this star can be successfully
reproduced by our model of a disk seen under an inclination of 30 degrees. In
the case of HD45314, the emission lines are highly asymmetric and display
strong line profile variations. We find a major change in behaviour between the
2002 outburst and the one observed in 2013. This concerns both the relationship
between the equivalent widths of the various lines and their morphologies at
maximum strength (double-peaked in 2002 versus single-peaked in 2013). Our
simple disk model fails to reproduce the observed H-alpha line profiles of
HD45314. Our results further support the interpretation that Oe stars do have
decretion disks similar to those of Be stars. Whilst the emission lines of
HD60848 are explained by a disk with a Keplerian velocity field, the disk of
HD45314 seems to have a significantly more complex velocity field that could be
related to the phenomenon that produces its peculiar X-ray emission.Comment: Accepted for Publication in A&
The Active Corona of HD 35850 (F8 V)
We present Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer spectroscopy and photometry of the
nearby F8 V star HD 35850 (HR 1817). The EUVE spectra reveal 28 emission lines
from Fe IX and Fe XV to Fe XXIV. The Fe XXI 102, 129 A ratio yields an upper
limit for the coronal electron density, log n < 11.6 per cc. The EUVE SW
spectrum shows a small but clearly detectable continuum. The line-to-continuum
ratio indicates approximately solar Fe abundances, 0.8 < Z < 1.6. The resulting
emission-measure distribution is characterized by two temperature components at
log T of 6.8 and 7.4. The EUVE spectra have been compared with non-simultaneous
ASCA SIS spectra of HD 35850. The SIS spectrum shows the same temperature
distribution as the EUVE DEM analysis. However, the SIS spectral firs suggest
sub-solar abundances, 0.34 < Z < 0.81. Although some of the discrepancy may be
the result of incomplete X-ray line lists, we cannot explain the disagreement
between the EUVE line-to-continuum ratio and the ASCA-derived Fe abundance.
Given its youth (t ~ 100 Myr), its rapid rotation (v sin i ~ 50 km/s), and its
high X-ray activity (Lx ~ 1.5E+30 ergs/s), HD 35850 may represent an activity
extremum for single, main-sequence F-type stars. The variability and EM
distribution can be reconstructed using the continuous flaring model of Guedel
provided that the flare distribution has a power-law index of 1.8. Similar
results obtained for other young solar analogs suggest that continuous flaring
is a viable coronal heating mechanism on rapidly rotating, late-type,

New rotation periods in the Pleiades: Interpreting activity indicators
We present results of photometric monitoring campaigns of G, K and M dwarfs
in the Pleiades carried out in 1994, 1995 and 1996. We have determined rotation
periods for 18 stars in this cluster. In this paper, we examine the validity of
using observables such as X-ray activity and amplitude of photometric
variations as indicators of angular momentum loss. We report the discovery of
cool, slow rotators with high amplitudes of variation. This contradicts
previous conclusions about the use of amplitudes as an alternate diagnostic of
the saturation of angular momentum loss. We show that the X-ray data can be
used as observational indicators of mass-dependent saturation in the angular

Stellar Lyman-alpha Emission Lines in the Hubble Space Telescope Archive: Intrinsic Line Fluxes and Absorption from the Heliosphere and Astrospheres
We search the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive for previously unanalyzed
observations of stellar H I Lyman-alpha emission lines, our primary purpose
being to look for new detections of Lyman-alpha absorption from the outer
heliosphere, and to also search for analogous absorption from the astrospheres
surrounding the observed stars. The astrospheric absorption is of particular
interest because it can be used to study solar-like stellar winds that are
otherwise undetectable. We find and analyze 33 HST Lyman-alpha spectra in the
archive. All the spectra were taken with the E140M grating of the Space
Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) instrument on board HST. The HST/STIS
spectra yield 4 new detections of heliospheric absorption (70 Oph, Xi Boo, 61
Vir, and HD 165185) and 7 new detections of astrospheric absorption (EV Lac, 70
Oph, Xi Boo, 61 Vir, Delta Eri, HD 128987, and DK UMa), doubling the previous
number of heliospheric and astrospheric detections. When combined with previous
results, 10 of 17 lines of sight within 10 pc yield detections of astrospheric
absorption. This high detection fraction implies that most of the ISM within 10
pc must be at least partially neutral, since the presence of H I within the ISM
surrounding the observed star is necessary for an astrospheric detection. In
contrast, the detection percentage is only 9.7% (3 out of 31) for stars beyond
10 pc. Our Lyman-alpha analyses provide measurements of ISM H I and D I column
densities for all 33 lines of sight, and we discuss some implications of these
results. Finally, we measure chromospheric Lyman-alpha fluxes from the observed
stars. We use these fluxes to determine how Lyman-alpha flux correlates with
coronal X-ray and chromospheric Mg II emission, and we also study how

Evolution of the Solar Activity over Time and Effects on Planetary Atmospheres: I. High-energy Irradiances (1-1700 A)
We report on the results of the Sun in Time multi-wavelength program (X-rays
to the UV) of solar analogs with ages covering ~0.1-7 Gyr. The chief science
goals are to study the solar magnetic dynamo and to determine the radiative and
magnetic properties of the Sun during its evolution across the main sequence.
The present paper focuses on the latter goal, which has the ultimate purpose of
providing the spectral irradiance evolution of solar-type stars to be used in
the study and modeling of planetary atmospheres. The results from the Sun in
Time program suggest that the coronal X-ray-EUV emissions of the young
main-sequence Sun were ~100-1000 times stronger than those of the present Sun.
Similarly, the transition region and chromospheric FUV-UV emissions of the
young Sun are expected to be 20-60 and 10-20 times stronger, respectively, than
at present. When considering the integrated high-energy emission from 1 to 1200
A, the resulting relationship indicates that the solar high-energy flux was
about 2.5 times the present value 2.5 Gyr ago and about 6 times the present
value about 3.5 Gyr ago (when life supposedly arose on Earth). The strong
radiation emissions inferred should have had major influences on the thermal
structure, photochemistry, and photoionization of planetary atmospheres and
also played an important role in the development of primitive life in the Solar
System. Some examples of the application of the Sun in Time results on
