MR imaging findings in Xp21.2 duplication syndrome
Xp21.2 duplication syndrome is a rare genetic disorder of undetermined prevalence and clinical relevance. As the use of chromosomal microarray has become first line for the work-up of childhood developmental delay, more gene deletions and duplications have been recognized. To the best of our knowledge, the imaging findings of Xp21.2 duplication syndrome have not been reported. We report a case of a 33 month-old male referred for developmental delay that was found to have an Xp21.2 duplication containing IL1RAPL1 and multiple midline brain malformations

Indirect exchange in GaMnAs bilayers via spin-polarized inhomogeneous hole gas: Monte Carlo simulation
The magnetic order resulting from an indirect exchange between magnetic
moments provided by spin-polarized hole gas in the metallic phase of a GaMnAs
double layer structure is studied via Monte Carlo simulation. The coupling
mechanism involves a perturbative calculation in second order of the
interaction between the magnetic moments and carriers (holes). We take into
account a possible polarization of the hole gas due to the existence of an
average magnetization in the magnetic layers, establishing, in this way, a
self-consistency between the magnetic order and the electronic structure. That
interaction leads to an internal ferromagnetic order inside each layer, and a
parallel arrangement between their magnetizations, even in the case of thin
layers. This fact is analyzed in terms of the inter- and intra-layer

Ferromagnetism and Canted Spin Phase in AlAs/GaMnAs Single Quantum Wells: Monte Carlo Simulation
The magnetic order resulting from a confinement-adapted
Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida indirect exchange between magnetic moments in the
metallic phase of a AlAs/Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As quantum well is studied by Monte Carlo
simulation. This coupling mechanism involves magnetic moments and carriers
(holes), both coming from the same Mn(2+) ions. It leads to a paramagnetic, a
ferromagnetic, or a canted spin phase, depending on the carrier concentration,
and on the magnetic layer width. It is shown that high transition temperatures

Thermal effects on atomic friction
We model friction acting on the tip of an atomic force microscope as it is
dragged across a surface at non-zero temperatures. We find that stick-slip
motion occurs and that the average frictional force follows ,
where is the tip velocity. This compares well to recent experimental work
(Gnecco et al, PRL 84, 1172), permitting the quantitative extraction of all
microscopic parameters. We calculate the scaled form of the average frictional
force's dependence on both temperature and tip speed as well as the form of the

Ferromagnetism and giant magnetoresistance in the rare earth fullerides Eu6-xSrxC60
We have studied crystal structure, magnetism and electric transport
properties of a europium fulleride Eu6C60 and its Sr-substituted compounds,
Eu6-xSrxC60. They have a bcc structure, which is an isostructure of other M6C60
(M represents an alkali atom or an alkaline earth atom). Magnetic measurements
revealed that magnetic moment is ascribed to the divalent europium atom with S
= 7/2 spin, and a ferromagnetic transition was observed at TC = 10 - 14 K. In
Eu6C60, we also confirm the ferromagnetic transition by heat capacity
measurement. The striking feature in Eu6-xSrxC60} is very large negative
magnetoresistance at low temperature; the resistivity ratio \rho(H = 9
T)/\rho(H = 0 T) reaches almost 10^{-3} at 1 K in Eu6C60. Such large
magnetoresistance is the manifestation of a strong pi-f interaction between
conduction carriers on C60 and 4f electrons of Eu.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Distribution of Microglial Phenotypes as a Function of Age and Alzheimer\u27s Disease Neuropathology in the Brains of People with Down Syndrome
Introduction: Microglial cells play an important role in the development of Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD). People with Down syndrome (DS) inevitably develop AD neuropathology (DSAD) by 40 years of age. We characterized the distribution of different microglial phenotypes in the brains of people with DS and DSAD.
Methods: Autopsy tissue from the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) from people with DS, DSAD, and neurotypical controls was immunostained with the microglial marker Iba1 to assess five microglia morphological types.
Results: Individuals with DS have more hypertrophic microglial cells in their white matter. In the gray matter, individuals with DSAD had significantly fewer ramified microglia and more dystrophic microglia than controls and the younger individuals with DS. The DSAD group also exhibited more rod-shaped and amoeboid cells than the AD group.
Discussion: Individuals with DS and DSAD show a microglial phenotype that distinguishes them from non-DS controls
Nanosized Sodium-Doped Lanthanum Manganites: Role of the Synthetic Route on their Physical Properties
In this paper we present the results of the synthesis and characterisation of
nanocrystalline La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples. Two synthetic routes were employed:
polyacrylamide-based sol-gel and propellant synthesis. Pure, single phase
materials were obtained with grain size around 35 nm for the sol-gel samples
and around 55 nm for the propellant ones, which moreover present a more broaden
grain size distribution. For both series a superparamagnetic behaviour was
evidenced by means of magnetisation and EPR measurements with peculiar features
ascribable to the different grain sizes and morphology. Preliminary
magnetoresistivity measurements show enhanced low-field (< 1 T)
magnetoresistance values which suggest an interesting applicative use of these
